should be addressed to gpja@xtra.co.nz

Dear friends,

On behalf of GPJA I'd like to extend a big thanks and the warmest seasons
greetings. With the continuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and NZ's
continuing military support for the US-led occupations of those countries,
2004 looks like another busy year for the peace and social justice
movements.

I'd like to signal a few of the events that will be happening in the new
year for those keen to participate.

January 16-18 is the annual protest at the Waihopai electronic spy base near
Blenheim. Those keen to take part should contact John Minto (see above) for
details. Activists from around the country will be using the occasion to
network on plans for the year.

BRUCE HUBBARD'S court case for sending an "offensive" email to the US
Consulate is set for January 22 at the North Shore Magistrates Court, Cnr of
Corinthian Drive and Don McKinnon Rd Albany. Be there to support him.

Monday, February 2, is our first GPJA FORUM of the year. We have a special
guest Sue Newberry from Christchurch explaining how financial management
systems are manipulated to promote more market reforms and privatisation.
Sue Newberry is a senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury, with a
research interest in public sector financial management reforms which are an
integral part of world trade developments. She has published research on
health-related aspects of the reforms; on the debilitating effects of the
accounting and budgeting system operated at central government level; on the
many biases and distortions in the system, including those that favour PPPs;
and on the way in which accounting developments help to conceal those
biases. Internationally, she is involved in research on PPPs and public
sector developments with colleagues in both Australia and the UK, and is an
invited speaker at the University of Sydney's PPPs forum in December 2003.

Sunday, February 15 will be GLOBAL PEACE PROTEST MUSIC FESTIVAL. The GPP
Music Festival is the initiative of PEACE NOT WAR, a grassroots campaigning
group raising awareness through music, and responsible for the Peace Not War
CD. (http://www.peace-not-war.org/Festival/index.html) Peace not War based
in the UK have put a call to groups around the globe to celebrate the
anniversary of the global peace protest of February 15th 2003, by organizing
music events in every town around the world. Worldwide travelling event
organizer The Plot (Tony Martin) has decided to take up the call whilst
being based in Auckland for the summer. The Plot has previously been a
part of events in support of Tibetan refugees in Nepal, Burmese communities
in Australia and most recently organizing the RAW Peace, event in London
timed to coincide with the state visit of George W. Bush. Seeking to
initiate the celebrations here in Auckland The Plot is calling on
likeminded individuals, campaign groups, performers and artists to state
their commitment in preparation for this day. All interested parties should
contact TONY MARTIN on 0211559875 or alternatively Email
theplotlondon@lycos.com

SATURDAY MARCH 20 is the GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST WAR AND OCCUPATION and
marks the anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. The day has been adopted as a
focus of activity by peace groups throughout New Zealand. Put it in your
diary today. We will be marching at 12 noon from the bottom of Queen St to
the Town Hall for a rally.

MESSAGES

The INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY committee is planning activities for March 8
2004. The next committee meeting is on Sunday January 18. For further
information please contact me
janetbogle@hotmail.com, tel 8340604; or Kirsty at euphemiak@yahoo.com

There's a nationwide mobilisation happening to combat the government over
genetic engineering. A worthy publication by the name of DECONTAMINATE has
come out to inform and inspire the direct action movement. Copies are
available from the address in the Resources section, but it will also be
available online quite soon at http://decontaminate.enzyme.org.nz

To teach the skills to take direct action, there is a NATIONAL DIRECT ACTION
CAMP happening at the start of January. Just remember me raving about the
direct action training that happened in Christchurch a few weeks back, and
pretend I was encouraging you to go to this overnight training camp. Talk
the talk with other interested people, and come away from it with skills to
walk the walk. People's Moratorium Direct Action Camp 1:00pm Friday 2
January to Saturday 3 Mountain Valley School, near Motueka Contact: 021 130

peoplesmoratorium@riseup.net www.pmea.org.nz/camp.html Learn the skills you
need to remind the government that the people matter more than their
corporate sponsors. The National Direct Action Camp is a three day series of
workshops on blockading, media training, decontaminating fields, and other
activist skills.

WAIHOPAI SPYBASE PROTEST CAMP
Friday 16 to Sunday 18 January, Waihopai Valley, near Blenheim
New Zealand's most significant contribution to American wars is the Waihopai
spybase. Waihopai is controlled by the US, with New Zealand (including
Parliament) having little or no idea what goes on there. We invite people
from around the country to join us for the weekend of anti-war protest at
this spybase.
Come prepared for roughing it and camping out. We've hired portaloos and a
marquee. We provide the food. Bring sleeping bag, groundsheet, a tent,
torch, water bottle, eating utensils, clothing for all weather, and $30 (or
$15 unwaged) to cover costs. Absolutely no open fires." Close the Waihopai
Spybase now! Organised by the Anti-Bases Campaign, for more info check out

APPEAL FOR SUPPORT FOR US MINERS STRUGGLE FOR JUSTICE
Seventy-four coal miners at C.W. Mining Company's Bear Canyon mine (known
also as Co-Op mine) in Huntington, Utah, were illegally fired from their
jobs on Sept. 22, 2003, after they protested the suspension of a co-worker
and unsafe job conditions. The mine, owned by the Kingston family, had
suspended UMWA supporter William Estrada for refusing to sign a disciplinary
warning the week before. At the time, it was the company's third attempt to
victimize a UMWA supporter, according to the Co-Op miners. These workers,
mostly Mexicans, contend they were fired and locked out by the company
because of concerted activities and unsafe conditions.
