• The Waltons, US Presidents, and longevity -- Mark, 15:36:24 05/27/08 Tue [25]
  Hello all. Don't ask me why I thought about this, but it occurred to me lately that the Waltons' run stretched into four presidential administrations -- Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan. I would think that has to be close to some kind of record for a drama series. Bonus points if anyone can think of a show that extended over more than four administrations -- and remember, I'm not counting long-running news shows like Meet the Press or 60 Minutes.

  Wow, what a fun site and message board this is! I just wanted to say hello, I hope you don't mind. My mother is a big fan of the Waltons and watched it growing up-I am a new fan because of the dvd releases. We obsessively watch them on the weekends for hours at a stretch. I don't have to tell you what a great show it is! :) My brother is named after Jason, though lol, he's more of a Jim-bob. It has been so much fun watching it together, we are almost done with season seven. I can't wait for the next set of dvds to come out!

  I'll be very impressed if a Walton devotee can help with this.
  I have a recurring memory from an episode, in which an old farmer, possibly fishing, tells of his freedom. How he gets up in the morning knowing he can work or fish or do whatever he likes on any given day. It's a very brief speech by a one-time character.
  Can anyone quote his exact words? It's a memory that just won't go away. Thanks.

  I grew up in Europe and remember watching all the episodes of the Waltons. All except one that is. One of the episodes was banned in Europe and I am trying to find it to see why this was the case. Does anyone know of this or have any ideas ?

  Hi, All. I'm a newbie from San Diego who watched The Waltons in the seventies. I'm thoroughly enjoying it again, in all its beauty.
  
  With regards to the question about the banned episode: could it possibly be THE UNTHINKABLE? This was the episode about Jason's Army buddy, Ted Lipinski...the Jewish boy whose grandfather died in the death camp in Poland. There are a lot of people still in denial about the Holocaust, and many Europeans are very sensitive about it.

  I am looking for two specific episodes and could not find them in the episode details on this forum. I hope someone out there could help. The first is the one where Olivia and John become foster parents. At then end of the episode the baby is adopted and Olivia has a hard time letting go. The second episode I'm looking for is when Ben wins a writing contest and his story is going to be published. He is worried about telling John-boy.   As in the episode.
  Has anyone been to a quilting? Or maybe you own a quilt that was made like the women did for MaryEllen.
  
  I own several quilts. One made and hand quilted by my husbands mother, she is 70 and still does hand quilting.
  
  One from his paternal and another by his maternal Grandmothers and one from his grear Aunt, all who are gone now. They are beautiful and I will cherish them always.
  
  I have sat around and quilted like they did in that episode. It is fun. I have made one , that is only one on my own alot of work. I take to crocheting more and love the scenes where Erin and Grandma sit on the couch and crochet. Which is alot different than knitting to me anyway. Some get the two mixed up.

  I can truly relate and have lived to a degree some aspects of Grandma Walton's stroke storyline and how Ellen Corby had to cope and have the courage and determination to carry onwards to the best of her ability thereafter....
  
  My mom , having been a stroke victim , after suffering a hemmorgial brain stroke following neck artery unclogging surgery, leaving her briandamaged somewhat, right side paralyzation, speech limitation, not able to do for herself.
  
  And yet this went on for the last 10 yrs of her life, that is how she spent it, in a long term hospital. We visited daily, she could muster only a few words, some swear words. Couldn;t sing words but still had the beautiful voice of tune intact to be able to hum a lovely tune.
  I missed out on having a Mom between 16-26 yrs , when a daughter needs a Mom then. All I could do was to give her love, be with her as much as I could.
  
  I'll always treasure her , and have fond memories of her, and so I will offer her flowers at her gravestone this coming Mother's Day.
  
  I could truly relate to the reactions of the Waltons when they had to cope with Grandma's recooperation from the stroke...the frustrations, wanting to help , etc..in my mother's case though, she could not help herself anfd we couldn't get therapy for her as her braindamage was beyond the point of even attempting to try therapy with her. She was not in a coma or a complete vegatitive state, but was unable to even hold a hairbrush. Then to have my father take a stroke the year she died, and have to deal with his health issues thereafter, to which he has now been in nursing home the last 5 yrs, has a form of Dementia now.
  
  Yes sir, one can truly relate to the Waltons in some point of life, indeed.

  Well, I know there was recently something posted on this forum about the release date of Season 8. I have almost finished watching Season 7. And I am so sad, because the last time I heard it could possibly be the 1st of next year before Season 8 is release! I don't know about you all, but I hate to wait that long!   Hi Brenda: I was thinking that maybe at the next reunion you could have some groups setup to do some of the things that they used to do on the Walton's show. The women on this forum seem to have a knowledge of, or desire to learn to do 'A Quilting', with frame and all. A woodshop class/group can make a piece of furniture for example. A poetry reading (poems donated) like Grandpa and JohnBoy used to quote, etc. And maybe these items can be donated to a charity or to the Walton's Museum in VA.

  You know, the more I watch The Waltons the more I like it. The episodes that are on The Hallmark Channel now are new to me because I graduated High School in 1977 and went to work on night shift and could'nt watch it after that. I have a few questions but I'll try not to make this too long. Why did'nt Patricia Neal play the mother on the series? Not that Micheal Learned was'nt good, she was very good and very pretty too. I hear that sometimes some of the characters will pop on this forum. To Mary McDonough, I have a sister who has Lupus also. To David Harper, if you are out there, pop in here and let us know how you are doing. I'm sure some of the characters that were children during the series have changed, maybe gained some weight or have some grey hair but who cares. Age takes it's toll on all of us. I think I have metioned before that Jim Bob is my favorite character because he reminds me so much of myself growing up in rural southern Indiana. I am the yougest of six kids. I have always tinkered with old cars, radios and other junk. I had my head in the clouds too a lot of the time growing up. One more thing, I have noticed so much similarities in the scenes used in The Waltons that look very much like rural southern Indiana where I grew up. I worked for the county highway for quite a while so I have been on every back road in Washington County Indiana. Some people still live like they did on The Waltons. They don't make moonshine anymore they just grow pot. Rural Souther Indiana is hilly, not tall enough to be mountains but look like it. Any replies will be appreciated. Thanks.

  Why does Cora Beth call Ike, Mr. Godsey???! Gosh.....
  I thought he asked her not to call him that when they were adopting Amy. Is that some kind of social acceptable thing to do in some social circles? I just wonder where that comes from. It seems so impersonal.

  I was wondering myself like another gentleman on the forum, about the vehicles used in The Waltons. I think it says as the show goes off, who furnishes the vehicles but it goes by so quick that I never can catch it. I was wondering who or what company furnished the vehicles for the show and what ever happened to the pickup Truck that John Walton had and the Model A Coupe that John Boy bought.   Dear Forum Gang (as named by JLP's poem),
  
  The subject that I am going to write..... all right....too formal... I just want to start a conversation over Curtis and Mary Ellen. I have never seen "The Tempest", but from what I hear about it on the forum and from what I see on episode lists, it was completely unnecessary and unwanted. I personally believe that it was fine when Curt was dead, because it showed that early on in the War there was a great cost to be paid.
  
  Everybody (an exaggerated term, I know) knows about Pearl Harbor, that it's when the U.S. joined WWI. We can relate to that in a somewhat easy way. It just is very hard to believe that someone reported to die while helping the
  war-wounded could wind up somewhere else, especially how he got off Hawaii!
  
  On with the commentary....
  
  Whenever I think of Mary Ellen divorcing Curt (or Curt divorcing Mary Ellen: I haven't seen it, so I don't know) it makes me sad. The love that John and Olivia had for each other would never allow for even one thought of the dreadful word.
  
  Also, if Curt was a different actor..... well, you know about that.
  
  I propose we have an list of deleted episodes with "The Tempest" as #1. We shall consider them not part of the series. Discussion could be used to determine which episodes would go.
  
  I'm just having fun writing.....and maybe even somebody reading through this long post.
