My parents grew up in the same small town in East Texas but by the time I was born we lived in Dallas and one set of grandparents lived in East Texas and one in West Texas. I had the wonderful opportunity of knowing all of my grandparents very well and all of my cousins on both sides very well. My mother's family had a family reunion every year on Labor Day weekend and it was very fun, but when my mom's generation died off no one wanted to continue the reunions. Now I only see my cousins when someone dies and sometimes not even then. It's sad.

My children are very close to their cousins on my husband's side. Their parents divorced when they were all young and they've always been as welcome in our house as our children. It's funny because so many of our acquaintances think we have 10 children instead of 6 because they think our niece and nephews belong to us. We used to correct them, but we don't even bother any more, we just claim them!
