I kissed your soft mouth
And I was holding a fragile life in my arms
Your every word a song
The breeze buffeting your hair
That was then
I stood, staring, dazed
Obscenities flew from those taunting lips
Your every word a funeral dirge
For a love I would gladly have died for
That was then
For many months, and some years
I fed you and calmed you and rubbed your neck
My every word a tome of love
And wasn't I the saintly spirit?
Back then?
Saving your life
By keeping you as a pet, free from the pain
That would well up from so very deep
Countering abuse with understanding
When all you craved was abuse
And funny, you got what you wanted
Though I never knew it
My subtle torture the guilt
To which you gave me the key
And now, in memory, for this is now
I think of those moments
We held each other close
And said nothing at all
