The real truth about euthanasia at LRAS
Anywhere from 70 - 100 animals are euthanized WEEKLY at LRAS.
After disposal pictures.

1. Owner surrendered animals only get 2 days for possible adoption
before
being killed. The front desk rarely, if ever, informs the surrendering
owner of this policy. Although, it is stated on the surrender form, it
is
in small print buried in the middle of a paragraph. Many owners would
find
alternate methods of placement if they knew they were sentencing their
animal to death.
2. At this time all dogs picked up in Pulaski county go straight to the
euthanasia room when they arrive at LRAS. So if you live in the
county,
your dog gets out of the yard and is picked up it will probably be dead
by
the time you realize it has escaped.
3. Most young animals that would have a good chance of being adopted
become
sick because of the unsanitary conditions while in LRAS and must be put
down
or worse, left to suffer until they die.
4. No sedation is given to any animal before being killed. Most other
animal services in central Arkansas do sedate to prevent the terror the
animals at LRAS go through.
5. When a mother dog with her young pups are killed, they are all taken
into the euthanasia room together. The pups are usually killed first;
the mother dog watches frantically as her pups scream in terror and
pain.
The little pups are injected with needles too large for their small
bodies. They are then put on the concrete floor out of reach of the
mother where many
struggle until they finally die. This inhumane and unnecessary
procedure
causes undue stress to the mother dog who is then less likely to
surrender
quietly without a struggle. Her death has been made worse than it had
to
be. No civilized society goes out of its way to make necessary
euthanasia more painful than it has to be. Witnesses verified.
6. Several dogs at a time are brought into the euthanasia room and
tethered, the ones left until last must watch as the others are killed.
A majority of these dogs go in with tails wagging, thrilled about
having
any human contact, then as one dog after another is killed in front of
them they become more and more panicked and terrified. Witnesses
verified.
7. LRAS currently uses 2 different methods to inject lethal serum into
feral
(wild) cats. Most feral cats are left in their kennels and are stabbed
through the bars with a syringe on a stick. These cats react with
panic
at
being jabbed, and fling themselves wildly around the kennel in hopes of
escape from their tormentors. This causes many of them to be injected
in
areas of the body that causes great pain, and many times slow painful
deaths. The injection could land anywhere on their body, but rarely
does
it
land in the liver where injection is recommended. Because the cats
react
so violently, sometimes these cats have to be stabbed more than once to
receive enough serum to end their life. This could be prevented with
something as simple as putting a sedative in a can of cat food. The
other
method that is commonly used is opening the cage door and snaring the
cat
around the neck with a snare pole. City or County personnel then
remove
the cat from the cage and in a violent struggle, they pin the catıs
head,
neck and shoulders to the floor. While the snare is holding the neck,
the
technicians will crush the catıs hindquarters to the floor with their
foot, thereby immobilizing it. At this point, the still struggling cat
is stabbed with a syringe connected to a pole. Rarely is the cat
injected
properly into the liver. When using either of these methods with small
kittens, the needle will often go all the way through their small body
and the serum is wasted and the kitten has to be injected again.
Witnesses verified.
8. Euthanasia procedures state that vital signs are to be checked
before
the animal is incinerated or put into the storage freezer. We have
testimony from witnesses that say that LRAS is not following this
policy.
In one case, a Rottweiler was found standing, still alive, inside the
freezer the
next morning. There have been several cases witnessed where upon being
thrown into the incinerator that animals have been heard to scream.
Dead
animals donıt scream.
9. Animals that are aggressive, scared, or ones that donıt cooperate or
struggle, die a horrible death by either being beaten or forced with
their
head into a corner with the snare pole and are injected wherever the
needle lands. Sedation would be such a simple solution for this
needless horror. We know at this time there is no alternative to
killing
many dogs we do believe it should be done in the most humane way
possible. Humane is not how you describe what happens at LRAS.
