I got a kick out of the looniness of this concept. You're done with a book, so you post a note that you're going to "release" it; i.e., dump it in some public place where someone else - presumably someone who had read your posting - can scoop it up. The idea is either the alleged one ("Make the world a library") or "Spend your money on anything except books", I'm not sure.
What really got to me was that after promoting the notion that we all ought to participate in this great, worldwide book exchange, the site offers merchandise for sale! So I posted to the site that I didn't want to buy a BookCrossing T-shirt, but if anyone had one they were going to "release" around the Jersey Shore, let me know and I'll trot down and pick it up.
Got a nice note from the site moderator for that one.

Yeah-I like the idea of "making the world a library" but I couldn't help wondering how many of the liberated books get picked up and thrown in the garbage.

The site is pretty interesting and there has been a lot of effort to promote the idea, so maybe it will catch on?

I wouldn't worry about BOOKCROSSING putting booksellers out of business 'cause someone has to buy the books to keep it going.???-

-I think I noticed where an author actually "released" some of his/her books in an effort to promote thier work.

I now have an excuse to visit my local library every week and this week I purchased a copy of JOHN GRISHAM'S "The Brethren" for $1.00 from the sale bin.(also working my way through all of OPRAH'S book club).

Mr.Talkonline and I have discussed setting up our traveling bookstore at CHAMP'S flea market at the SANDCASTLE-more on that later?
