MLK would have been right next to those "freaks" protesting the war.     I was in Pensauken, NJ this morning working, and I could not get the HH show on the radio. I tried 1400, through 1450 AM and no go. I tried the FM station and still no HH. Is the station power so low as to not get to Pensauken? I thought it was broadcast out of Trenton. What gives?

    Just when you thought the people could refrain from bashing the guy, his supporters (both of them) decide they should take the opportunity of the armistice to laude him and proclaim him king of the weekend airways. I will keep to the spirit of not bashing Hairy, but suggest to those who feel he is a horse's patoot, they should call in Saturday during his "wind breaking" news interviews. I suggest the calls come often especially when the City's Brain Trust, Speedo Marsh, is going to discuss his departure from the School Bored. I cannot wait until Paul (he really is a nice guy-why does he support Hairy?) D'amato gives Hairy his award. I have seen the award, and it is a picture of HH and a Knight. How lucky.     The only local talk show hosts that promote objective and intelligent dialogue are Seth and Pinky. Barbara is in a world of her own. But the rest are Rush Limburger wanabes. They allow callers that they agree with ramble on as long as they want. They also allow them to make some of the most ridiculous assertions unchallenged. But when someone has a legitimate and reasonable opposing view, they don’t allow them to completely make their point and challenge almost everything said. Then you have the bigots who almost on a daily basis take their little swipes at anyone non-white, particularly minorities in power. A lot of people I know who hear me call the shows tell me they agree with my points and would like to call in themselves. But they don’t call because they hear what happens to those with opposing views compared to those who kiss the host butts. Even Seth and maybe to a lesser degree, Pinky, lean pretty far right. It would be nice if there were a local host with more moderate views.

    Mike, You follow things in radio very closely. And usually have a lot of insight and even inside info. There are quite a few outright lies being told here. You know the key demos and exactly what they are. You also know exactly what Hurley's ratings are. Further, you also know that he has more listeners than the rest in the top 2 key demos. And, that to have more listeners on the weekend vs. weekdays is quite an accomplishment.How bout lending your expertise and give this some clarity. If Hurley's numbers were bad, you know darn well, the haters would be blaring them from the highest mountain top. Your thoughts would be appreciated and respected, Mike.

    Sinn Fein Tattoo Linked to Al-Qaeda?

    IS Sinn Fein somehow linked to al-Qaeda? The U.S. Coast Guard allegedly thinks so, according to an outraged Irish American who was recently discharged from service because he sports a large Sinn Fein tattoo on his left forearm.

    Justin Walter, 26, originally from Astoria, Queens but now resident in Arizona, received his discharge order from the Coast Guard last month. Coast Guard officers at a Cape May, New Jersey base allegedly told Walter that the tattoo was unacceptable because Sinn Fein, Northern Ireland’s largest Nationalist party, is involved with al-Qaeda and is also dedicated to overthrowing the British government.

    “I was basically called a terrorist in front of other recruits,” Walter said in an exclusive interview with the Irish Voice. “My tattoos are nothing more than a display of Irish pride, but the Coast Guard thinks otherwise.” What galls Walter even further is his prior record of military service before enlisting in the Coast Guard. Walter was a member of the U.S. Army reserves for six years and was honorably discharged after his term ended in August of 2001. The Sinn Fein tattoo, and the other Irish tattoos on his arms and hands, never posed a problem for Army officials, he says.

    “No one ever said anything in the Army,” Walter says. “Lots of others also had tattoos and it wasn’t a problem at all. It was a total non-issue.” Commander Jim McPherson, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard in Washington, D.C., disputes Walter’s version of what happened in Cape May, and says Walter was discharged because of the size and number of tattoos he had.

    “This is what he was questioned about,” McPherson told the Irish Voice. “The tattoos are very large.” McPherson also denied that any Coast Guard officials said that Sinn Fein was linked to terrorism. “I don’t think anyone could make that kind of connection,” he said.

    McPherson said that there are no blanket bans against tattoos in the Coast Guard, but there are provisions about the size and number of tattoos a recruit can have. “And that’s what the problem was here,” he said. “It was a judgment call that was made at headquarters in Washington, D.C.” When asked why the Army didn’t question the Sinn Fein tattoo, McPherson said the requirements for the Coast Guard are different. “The Army recruits 77,000 people a year, while the Coast Guard only takes 5,000,” he said. “There are different standards in all areas. The Coast Guard requires higher education standards and is less tolerant of infractions. That’s because, as a law enforcement agency, we interact with the public much more than the Army.” Walter got the Sinn Fein tattoo, and a Celtic dragon etched underneath the words, in 1997. He chose the words Sinn Fein because he liked the English translation, “Ourselves Alone.” He also followed the Irish peace process and felt that Sinn Fein was the party most committed to making it work.

    Walter never attended any Sinn Fein rallies or fundraisers in the U.S., nor has he ever had any contact with party officials. “I wouldn’t do that because I was in the U.S. military,” he explained. “It’s not something I ever had time to do. I never, ever gave a dime to Sinn Fein.” Walter grew up in a staunchly Irish household; his mother is from an Irish family in Manchester, England, and his maternal grandparents are from Co. Cork. All of them emigrated to New York in the 1960s.

    The Walter family vacationed frequently in Ireland while Justin was growing up, and Justin’s Irish heritage has always been a source of great interest to him. There are still cousins and other family members in Ireland that he likes to visit frequently.

    “I heard a lot of stories about Ireland while growing up,” Walter says. “Tommy Makem was a good friend of my grandfather William Ahern. I read lots of Irish books and had lots of Irish friends. I have a great love of my Irish heritage.” Walter got his first tattoo, an Irish flag on his left shoulder, while serving with the Army in Georgia in 1996. “Everyone was getting tattoos then, and I figured I’d never be ashamed to have an Irish flag on my body, so I got it,” he said. “Nothing was ever said to me by any Army officials.” In addition to the flag and Sinn Fein tattoos, Walter also has a tattoo of the word “Saighdiur,” the Gaelic word for soldier, which he got in 2001, on his right forearm. Around that time he also received small tattoos of an Irish harp on his left hand and a shamrock on his right.

    Shortly after being discharged from the Army in 2001, Walter decided to enlist in the Coast Guard. The recruiting officer in Arizona photographed his tattoos and sent them up the chain of command to see if they were permissible.

    Word eventually came back that the shamrock and harp tattoos would have to be removed from Walter’s hands, at his own expense, if he wished to proceed with his Coast Guard recruitment. Walter readily agreed to have the symbols removed through painful laser surgery that cost nearly $2,000 and left scars on his hands that he’ll carry for life.

    “But I didn’t mind at all,” he says. “If that’s all they wanted me to do then I was all for it.” Walter received his order to report for Coast Guard duty in Cape May in December of last year. He says that he was immediately singled out during his first day of class by the chief in charge who wanted to see his tattoos.

    “He took me to the back of the class and had me roll up my sleeves,” Walter says. “He said he would have to do further investigation about the Sinn Fein tattoo. I explained that photos had already been sent for approval before I arrived, but it didn’t seem to matter.” Shortly after this first encounter, Walter claims he was informed that research had been done about Sinn Fein on the Internet, with Coast Guard officials allegedly claiming the party was linked to the IRA, which in turn had connections to al-Qaeda and other terrorist activity. Walter was told that the tattoo would have to go.

    “I tried to explain that Sinn Fein was a peaceful group that were not connected in any to terrorism,” Walter said. “If I had an IRA tattoo on my arm I would have understood their position, but Sinn Fein has been welcomed in the White House and has lots of political support here. If the White House can accept Sinn Fein, how come the Coast Guard can’t?” What followed were a series of meeting between Walter and Coast Guard officials, and the end result was that Walter was honorably discharged on December 13 because of the tattoo. “They gave me an honorary discharge because they didn’t want to affect my other years of military service,” Walter said. “But it was an awful experience. Just before I was leaving one of the company commanders accused me of putting terrorist s*** on my body.” When Walter returned to Phoenix he made contact with his recruiting officer, who was unaware of what happened in Cape May. Efforts were made to clear Walter’s enrollment, with the FBI and State Department contacting the Coast Guard to inform officials that Sinn Fein is not on the U.S. terrorist watch list. So far, Walter says, the Coast Guard has yet to respond, and at this stage he’s simply fed up.

    “I would have liked to have gone back, and I was willing to cover the tattoo if I had to,” Walter said. “But the whole experience has really angered me. I’m an American who wants to serve my country, and I was denied that chance over showing pride in my Irish heritage. I’m just extremely upset.” Resigned to a future that doesn’t include the Coast Guard, Walter now plans on taking the entrance exam to join the police force in Sedona. “And I’m sure I’ll get a better welcome there,” he said. “Nothing could be worse than what happened to me in the Coast Guard. I felt like a criminal.”

    To begin with Hurley got spanked when he put up Arbitron breakout numbers without permission and against copywrite laws,as you friends of hurley notice he quickley removed his numbers when he got wind that several people wrote and called Arbitron to complain.

    Next to the point of his numbers versus weekday shows is a joke to compare different times and days is just plain silly even to you his most staunch supporters.

    Lets not forget his silly hypocritical I'm against Don Williams criticizing Pinky but it's OK For Harry to...Duh

    It's also evdenced that Harry listens to Don Williams like the rest of you do because he no longer even bothers to lie in his articles by saying that some one sent tapes or told him that "Don said this or that" he just rips what he has heard "because he has to listen" so he will have something to write about!

    In the New Jersey USA we have the misfortune of having listed our home with YHD Foxton and their supposed "local realestate experts", I am here to tell you nothing could be further from the truth. From start to finish YHD has provided horrible service and lacks the most rudemantary sales knowledge. No one seems to know what is going on and there is never any one in charge to speak with they basically abuse the system and wait for houses to be sold by the grace of god. They do absolutely no follow up or proactive marketing of your home. There is nothing that YHD does that a homeowner with a PC and 20 minutes a week could do on their own. While they are busy bashing the realestate profession and calling them all lairs and thieves in their advertisments they do nothing short of what they accuse others of, and to add insult to injury they refuse to acknowledge their wrong doing in any of this they are obtuse and I hope to spit on their grave someday very soon...

    After reading Harrys article on Don Williams I realize a couple of things are evident 1) Harry has to listen to 1400 in the morning so he will have something or someone to write about 2)his jealousy makes him more stupid as the fact he tries to twist Dons arbitron ratings into a negative while lieing about his own and 3) he's reading this board for sure as he took down his Arbitron break out numbers from his site because he probably found out he was breaking the law of copyright and didn't want another pulic spanking.

    I follow the radio board on the NJO site and one of the longest discussions was a complaint about the lack of local programming, particularly in the North Jersey market which is heavily influenced by NY stations. I would hate to see WOND entirely jettison its local format for national, even programs that I do like (Sean Hannity, for example.)
    You have Don Williams as Arbitron #1, Barbara Altman who has been repeatedly honored for her contributions to this area, Jeff Whitaker, whose national TV appearance has to be a first, and was followed with the Sean Hannity interview and congratulations from David Limbaugh. You have Seth Grossman and Barry and the Champ who have pulled in a lot of advertising dollars (and just try to call into Barry and Champ - it took me 45 minutes one Sunday!). You have a much-needed entertainment round-up with Dan Klein, that covers all sorts of events from sports fishing to local theatre, the sort of events you would NEVER hear about on a syndicated show.
    I think there are some changes I would make, but I always recall that line from King Lear, how striving to better 'oft we mar what's well'. In other words, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

    I spent some time driving around the area looking for some more esoteric wines; not your run of the mill Gallo or Bolla crap. I found a couple very nice stores with good selections. The one in Margate near Granville Ave was excellent. The one in Ventnor Hts was very good too. You have to ask for things that are not on the shelf. Prices were decent too. How are the stores on the Mainland?

    Well, well, well. What do you know. No one is talking about it, but AM-1450 went from a .6 overall rating, to a 1.8. That's a big increase. And this is according to the AC Press. My guess is that Harry Hurley's first rating period on the weekends must have a great deal to do with this.

    AM-1450 has had a 3 times increase, almost every other station is no better than flat, and many went down a lot.

    This board is quick to blast Harry and these numbers have been out for several days now and no one has had anything bad to say, so it's obvious that this is good news, that means bad news around here.

    And, afterall, we know that the AC Press would never lie.

    Drudge started out tonight's show with a Mom who reported that her Son, who is serving our Country with the armed forces,overseas,recently recieved a notice from his home-town in New York,that he had been automaticly registered to VOTE! (ok,so far,I guess)..............BUT-he had been "assigned" a PARTY designation! The "Democratic" Party!!!!. The Soldier's Mom questioned him,according to her call to DRUDGE, and he (the son),said that he ABSOLUTELY DID NOT,register with the "Democratic" party,and furthermore,he was PO'D about this because changing party affiliation could require a visit to his home district and/or complicated paper-work.

    If the 19 year old Service man does NOT change his designated (by WHO?) party,he will be UNABLE to VOTE in any REPUBLICAN primary elections!!!!.

    DRUDGE is anticipating documents to confirm the woman's story.

    Later on in the show, another caller,said that he had completed filling-out an online form with personal-(name,address and...???) information because a pop-up ad said that he could have a FREE RAZOR (name brand)...AFTER the man gave up his info.,he noticed that a small-print box had been checked "yes",and that the box said something like "enroll me in the Democrat party" ICK!

    Will we hear the THIRD HOUR of DRUDGE tonight???? ....

HH covers a wide range of topics, political and otherwise, and does it in a very blunt manner that, quite frankly, often invites a response, whether positive or negative. The forum you moderate offers those who would like to voice their opinions a unique opportunity to do so(to be frank, HH does not tolerate dissent too well and offers little accomodation on his radio show or web-site to those who disagree with him.)     Just caught the tail end of Hurleys show today and the last caller stated that Craig Callaway was the instigater of getting Langford elected by absentee ballots. Hurley said that for every 1 absentee ballot Craig got he was responsible for 2 against Langford, either: (1), voted for Wealan, or (2) due to bad publicity decided not to vote for Langford. How things change!! Hurley stated on his show the day after Langford was confirmed Mayor that Craig played a monunentous part in getting Langford elected by the absentee ballots.
    People do change their allegiances I admit I have done so in the past and will do so in the future. So in "Hurleys law" people who have "switched over" to support Craig are wrong and now that he has "switched over" he is right.
    Wrong is right and right is wrong i'm confused!!!!!
