Just food for thought....if the rule book had been left as it was.........we may not have had a Team at all........the Family Point System made it next to impossible for swimmers to compete.......this rule book is not engraved in stone but is better than the old rule book that was full of contradictions and punitive rules......the rules are open for review and discussion.......In the past athletes needed to come back for Nationals so the Federations could fairly assess the fitness and conditioning of the athlete......this was before the electronic age where we can now find results on line almost as fast as if we were sitting at the edge of the track or the pool....Consider this ......if a swimmer is abroad and training for an international meet should the athlete have to break training, travel and spend money to to compete in Nationals????? Doesn't make sense to me. The old rule book also had a rule that all Clubs had to hold one meet a year at the 50m facility? Should Freeport have to hold a meet at the BKKAC?.....the real issue isn't the rules, the Nationals, whether the athletes are Bahamians (they are) or whether the parents have broken a sweat on deck or in the kitchen...(by the way there are many parents and guardians who never make it on deck!)The real issue seems to be that swimmers are training more and getting, as they should, better, and some athletes did not in the final evaluation of the Coaches make the cut (so to speak)....
This BSF is run by hard working parents....This BSF is and always has been open to frank discussion.....but not heresay........finally a Bahamian is a Bahamian........is a Bahamian.
Shouldn't we strive to always put forth our best?.....Should an athlete have to take part in the Nationals? Does the expenditure of money by Parents (as the writer below suggests, be taken into account when selecting a Team........this attitude is scary....where does that leave the less fortunate but talented athlete.....???? Should the swimmer from the Family Island be given more consideration because he or she had to spend more money to travel to take part in the Nationals??? For many years the swimmers had to cover the major part of the cost of the CARIFTA and CISC trips.......for many years swimmers were not even allowed the opportunity to travel to the regional age group meets....but the BSF officials travelled.....This BSF has a full competitive squad ready to travel.......and a Water Polo squad for the second year running......this BSF is and always has been all about the advancement of sport through hard work and a dedicated group of swimmers!
