- I'm interested in how you cope when your dd or ds is dancing at the O's (more) -- nervous nelly, 08:53:57 11/15/09 Sun
just the thought of it - will she fall, will her wig stay on, will she puke.. will i puke!!! i would never say these things out loud because people would think i'm insane but i'm worried. She's practiced so much and for so long, she wants it so bad and has done everything in her power to do her best - and i'll be so happy just to be there and watch and support her..we will pray for recall and be so happy to see her to her set but while she's dancing i get so nervous.. i can barely stand up. do others have this or am i the only nut. I guess it's my personality. i could never stand on a stage and be judged by a panel and all sitting there. i'm a chicken. but my daughter has been doing this for so long and it's never gotten easy for me. i don't tell her this. I jsut try to hold the smile on my face, but it's so hard. am i the only one? really, i feel sick sometimes... if it wasn't so early in the morning i'd have a drink to calm my nerves! forget the results, watching her on the stage waiting NOT to hear her number- i can barely handle it with my nerves...
if anyone has any advice i'd love to hear it.

- I have the shakes during recalls and don't breathe. If the number is called, then normal breathing returns. You are not alone, most of us go through this. You had the courage to post. You have more strength than the rest of us, and you have instilled that in your dancer. That will carry you through. (NT) -- Good luck at the O's, 09:01:32 11/15/09 Sun
- Send one parent or guardian to the event. It's too nervewracking to have an entire family watching...it's stressful competition, not a dance out. I'm just thankful she's healthy enough to dance and has support of friends and family on her dance journey. (NT) -- JMHO, 09:14:35 11/15/09 Sun

- I've been doing this long enough to know when she won't recall. She has it figured out too now, It's when I tell her 'no matter what, I love you and that you had the courage to get up there'. - Two weeks to the Oireachtas and a huge growth spurt has my dd's heel hurting -- Help!, 06:27:57 11/15/09 Sun
She already does daily therapy to help, but feeling a bit desparate as the usual fix is two weeks rest and therapy. I have read about something called Oscon, but other than some posts on the main message board, I can find very little actual info on this other than a couple sites that are supposedly giving info on OGS and Severs but are actually selling this product. Don't know what is in it, how safe it would be to give my 11yo, or even how to administer it. I am hoping there is someone out there who can give some advice on what this product is, how safe it is and where I can get more info on it. My dd doesn't want to give up on the O yet.

- Can't help much other than to say my daughter feels your daughter's pain! We tried Oscon ( found little about it except for on its site), and she didn't get the relief some other have been lucky to report. - Hi--this hit my daughter recently, too...heel supports are good, only wear athletic shoes til the O. Also, our podiatrist has been doing ultrasound 2x/week and the whirlpool. - Solo Dress -- Mom, 08:53:36 11/12/09 Thu
My daughter will be moving up to Novice this January. Is it really neccessary for her to get a solo dress and wig at this point? She has been dancing in her school dress, but I do see a lot of girls in Novice with solo dresses. A little advice needed.
[ Post a Reply to this Message ][Edit]
Replies:
- I would think that a wig or a bun/bun cover are typical in Novice. I don't think a solo costume is necessary - but if you get one I'd stay on the simple side. You don't want the dress to be inconsistent with her ability. If your school has nice dresses, I'd stick with that until she is more ready for Pirzewinner, and then spring for the solo. (NT) -- My opinion., 08:56:45 11/12/09 Thu
- i would stick with the school dress until she's on her way into prizewinner (NT) -- but might want the wig, 09:07:37 11/12/09 Thu
- Ultimately up to your TC, but personally I don't think it's necessary. I agree a lot of novices are now in solos but there's a glut of used dresses out there and novice-level dancers can pick up some real bargains. Judges aren't fooled by a lesser dancer in a solo vs a more accomplished dancer in a school dress (NT) -- just our experience, 09:46:37 11/12/09 Thu
- I would say no (our school has always done no solo dress til PC as do others), but you should obviously talk to your TC to see what they require in their school (NT) -- No name, 10:00:02 11/12/09 Thu
- My daughter just moved to novice and will stay in her school dress until she has several 1sts. We have moved from bun wig to megan wig. Unless she outgrows the school dress - (NT) -- THEN we'll be in the market for a very simple solo dress. :-), 12:26:33 11/12/09 Thu
- I think it's up to your TC. My dd,though, got 3 dances out of novice in a jumper, against girls in solo dresses. She got a solo 2 months ago. (NT) -- It's the dancing, 12:33:32 11/12/09 Thu
- Definitely check with your TC. Dd's TC doesn't allow her dancers to get solos until they have moved at least 2 or 3 dances into Prizewinner. (NT) -- best of luck to your dd, 16:21:33 11/12/09 Thu
- Here's a different answer by a 'novice' Mom (former champ Mom with older girls). Solo dresses are awesome and pretty inexpensive (less than our school dresses). Makes my dd feel like a million bucks. Sooo worth it (NT) -- and our TC says 'Have Fun! Go For It', 19:21:38 11/12/09 Thu

- Extra dress for dance-outs/shows $200 see inside. -- dresskeeper, 04:35:30 11/14/09 Sat
I have several dresses that are 3 to 4 years old. They would be perfect for shows and danceouts when a costume is required. I am selling them for 200 dollars each.
With the expence of costumes these days, why not have an extra costume that can take the abuse of a heavy duty St. Patrick's season?
Put away your $3000 costume and use one of these.
One costume would suit a 9 to 11 year old.
Another would suiut a 12 to 14 year and the last one would suit a 13 to 15 year old.
If you have an interest, I will supply photos and measurements.

- People ... It's a Jeep. They are not made to ride like a car. They are made to go on rough terrain! If you want a car, get a car. Jeep is a fun vehicle. Yes, gas milage not the greatest. No, it does not have a soft suspension. But, you can get almost anywhere and anytime! (NT) -- Like getting muddy, 04:01:02 11/10/09 Tue

- “Champtrax” – a new CD from Mark Arrington. This has some unique features: -- Mark Arrington, 13:17:29 11/12/09 Thu
-The first 12 tracks are An Coimisiun championship length tunes played once, twice, and three times through, so a prelim/open dancer can practice their steps up to three times without stopping and still have a definite ending. If dancing in succession, the tunes change or end when the steps end. The last four tracks are “standard” long tracks of tunes like most feis CDs.
-It’s very traditional, as in The Chieftains, Bothy Band, Altan, De Danann etc.
-I play all the instruments except for the squeaky chair and the bark (see below).
-I didn’t realize until the final mix that my dog Merry (bichon frise), makes an appearance in one of the tunes! The first person to find Merry will receive a free copy of my set dance CD “Kick It Up A Notch!”
- Until the end of the year, you also get one free set dance when you order Champtrax!
It’s available on my site www.markarringtonmusic.com. At a feis or the Oireachtas you can get it at Fay Shoes or Head for the Worlds. In a month or so it will be on iTunes.

- It's usually by birthday (NT) -- nt, 14:10:26 11/11/09 Wed
- Won't know until you get the book. But as long as I've been going it's never been random. Been done by birthdays, alphbetized by first name, etc... (NT) -- DM, 14:22:58 11/11/09 Wed
- I wish it would be random, so much more fair that way. When done by birthday you always dance w/the same people. Get a giant hat, put all names in an pull it that way. (NT) -- hope someone listens but doubt it, 15:18:04 11/11/09 Wed
- I think it is totally fair by birthday! but maybe not by birthday each year... (NT) -- dd would be one age group down if born 3 hours later!, 18:03:25 11/11/09 Wed
- Having a "system" helps with the conspiracy theories. Alpha, birthdays, etc. But should never be used more than once to avoid dancing with same person every year. (NT) -- System is a good thing!, 18:32:46 11/11/09 Wed
- then the MARO must do it differently than the SRO cause I know that SRO does it by random. everyone in that age group is just randomized into a competitior list (NT) -- so everyone competes with the same person every year onstage at maro?, 18:39:07 11/11/09 Wed

- What do you need to move from Prizewinner to Prelim? I can't find it on any syllabi, though I'm guessing it's firsts in everything? Can you straddle PW and Prelim, or do you need four firsts before you move up? -- still learning, 20:04:08 11/10/09 Tue

- A dancer does not have to be moved to Prelim. No definite requirement. When TC thinks dancer is ready. (NT) -- dm, 20:13:54 11/10/09 Tue
- First place in PW light and heavy dances (either reel or slig jig, and either jig or HP). (NT) -- -, 20:19:03 11/10/09 Tue
- You can't do half and half. You need all the firsts or TC's discretition. (NT) -- --, 20:36:08 11/10/09 Tue
- You really need the TC's approval. Some TC's have dancers 'bounce' back and forth between PW and Prelim to gain more confidence along the way. (NT) -- ..., 04:14:52 11/11/09 Wed
- And some will never move to Prelim. You may stay in Prizewinners indefinitely. (NT) -- not all champs, 07:29:36 11/11/09 Wed
- The minimum requirements are one PW first in either Reel or Slip Jig, plus one PW first in either Treble Jig or Hornpipe. But it is not mandatory to move up with these, and many TCs will wait until a dancer has achieved firsts in all 4 dances. We know one TC who requires 2 PW firsts in each of the 4 core dances before moving to Prelim. (NT) -- OC mom, 08:03:52 11/11/09 Wed
- I'm dense.....you can stay in PW forever? Why would someone do this? Or do they not have a choice? (NT) -- OP, 13:58:05 11/11/09 Wed
- Can I also say thank you for everyone's help.....I come on often and post questions because I really am out of my league here.....my hubby takes dd to classes and I really don't get the chance to interact with other parents or the TC there.......(more) -- OP, 14:03:00 11/11/09 Wed
- Different TCs might require more firsts than what the syallbi says. Also, dancer needs 3 steps, not 2, so TC needs to be involved in the move. (NT) -- !!, 17:30:51 11/11/09 Wed
- Our school requires multiple firsts in every dance, will move when he feels you are ready to "place" in prelim, not just qualify to "dance" in prelim. Has worked for all in our school. All place first time in prelim. (NT) -- feis mom, 06:00:10 11/12/09 Thu

but she always ends up in tears and limping around at the feis. I know that breaking in shoes can be tough, but how much pain at trying on shoes should she have? If she can't walk, she can't dance. She's not prone to drama, so I believe her when she says she can't walk. We've always bough used, so she's never had to break in shoes before. Can any dancers tell me what's "normal"? Should you be able to walk in them? She does have very wide feet. Thanks in advance.
