Subject: Remember not so long ago all the feis would be full before the cut off? What has changed? I am particularly surprised about cape cod. A few years ago that would've been closed for registrations at this point. Not looking for trouble, seriously just wondered do you think it's an oversaturation?

[> Subject: Honestly, I think its cost, across the board. Irish Dance has become a very expensive hobby, and people have now needed to be more selective about which feis they will attend because it's hard for most to compete regularly, as most of us were able to even five years ago. For us, we no longer attend feis that require a stay, and usually focus on the ones that are closer to majors.

I am not attempting to dismiss the expenses of teaching/running a school/running a feis. But the days of $5 classes, $40 feis, and $75 hotel stays are long gone, so parents have to make decisions based on finances.

[> Subject: Happening all over. We are from another region and feis mostly in Midatlantic, ECR and MidAmerican. Very few seem to hit cap even after they extend deadline. Even the hot ticket ones a few years ago don't. I actually think less are dancing- grades numbers less I've noticed than DD from a few years ago.

[> Subject: Was just thinking this the other day! DD has also had tremendous amount of dancers in her prelim age group stop dancing. We are on the verge. For me it is the total subjectivity of dancing. One feis dancer gets first, next feis places at bottom or not at all. When you have a large group and region requires 3 firsts, and you cannot feis frequently, well it can take years to move up!

So many kids in novice and prizewinner my daughter has danced with quit
It seems lile it is hard for the casual dancer to continue.. with the fancy costumes $$$ in grades and schools focusing on placement at majors...seems like the kids from the smaller schools are happier not focused on the perfect look and dance through high school ... not critizing any school we as parents need to find the right match for our child and what they want from dance... you do not need to Feis every weekend... most kids will make it to prelim by high school...

[> Subject: Personally for us, with so many feiseanna being offered, we will no longer be attending ones that lump 17+ in open. Many in MAR do 19+. Might even consider some 18+ if they do not have the same 10 NE judges year after year. With so many to choose from and the expense of it all, we are going for fewer age groups lumped together and better judging panels.

After this past year of going into U19, we've learned to basically see where DD places in regards to the others in her age group and not obsess on the overall placement. In OC, to us that's what matters more. If she wins, it's even better! It's not like it gets you anything other than bragging rights...in prelim however, yes it should be single age groups as much as possible.

The Horgan Feis lumped U17/U18 together for both Prelim and OC. It was disappointing that at tabulation, they didn't make the effort to split U17/U18 (esp. for Prelim) when they knew that there were sufficient # of dancers for both comps' to have more than the minumum # of dancers to qualify as a competition.

So 16YO were dancing with 18YO's...some may not think it's a big deal but, at Prelim level when it still matters to the girls on the cusp, every chance matters.
