Subject: Trying to figure out what is "normal", do most schools require dancers to do ceili to do solos at Oireachtas? If so, are the ceili classes the same price as solo classes? Do you just reduce solo classes so you can afford ceili? Just curious how others manage the mayhem.

[> Subject: Never heard of a school reqiring a dancer to do Ceili in order to do solo or trad at O... Unless maybe it is a small or new school. We have always just done solo because of the practice time required, cost and we do other sports and it would not be fair to be on a team ....Most school also invite or have tryouts for a ceili team. 8 hand teams can go to naitionals if they do the O so you may also have that cost.. BUT it should not be a requirement from the school....

[> Subject: Not a requirement for us but pretty much everyone does. But we do solo classes and ceili classes all year so we just expect the expense. Many of us add extra solo classes and/or privates before oireachtas

[> [> Subject: in my dds former school it was required. If you want to do solos, you must do any and all teams that you are asked to do (figure, ceili, mixed teams). Team fees in excess of $2k, not including costuming, wigs, shoes.

Rule applies to all majors. Minimum number of classes set for solos. Team classes are 4-6 hours or more on a weekend depending on number of teams. Dancer injuries, condescending behavior by teachers, disrespect to dancers and families, backstabbing and frustration lead to many leaving. It wasn't about teaching irish dance. It was about TC making as much as they can.

[> [> [> [> Subject: I had wished it was a positive experience for my dd but after years of terrible team classes they became something many dreaded. We joked that we were summoned to be on a team. A few toxic team members and TCs who don't know how to lead with positivity was a terrible mix.

[> Subject: Our school does require them and has for decades, definitely contributes to school comradery, working towards goals together, appreciating ID history. Very appreciative for life lessons from ceili

[> Subject: our school does require team participation at OIR if you are doing solos. You won't to TS and unless selected to go on teams. If you beg out of teams, TC will not register you for solos. No one really minds and enjoys teams.

[> [> Subject: This seems so unfair, or maybe unkind is a better word. So if you're not chosen to be on a team you are also denied the experience of doing TS or solos. Dd always did solos and teams but there were other kids who were great TS or solo dancers but just weren't good team dancers. Or they weren't the right height, or the number of kids in their age group did not divide neatly into 4-hands. This wasn't their fault. I find your school's policy pretty hard-hearted.

[> [> Subject: How awful and ridiculous to penalize your dd by withholding entry into two oireachtas. The TC is bullying you. They want the upper hand no matter what. Take your money elsewhere. There are schools out there that respect their dancers and families especially ones like yours that did teams for 4 years.
