I looked on the syllabus, which you can find here http://neidt.org/oireachtas but couldn't find the information about when they split trad sets. Looking at the results for 2016 and 2015, U7, U15, and all older than U15 were not split. U8-U14 were. In the years that we have done trad set, splits were by birthday. The exact date was determined after entries closed, at which point the dancers were put in order by birthday to determine the middle point so that the splits were an equal number. After that determination a list of dates was sent to the TCs and also published on the neidt.org website (it will be different for each age group depending on where they need to split so that they get even numbers). When you get to Hartford you'll be able to buy a program book that will list all competitors in each competition with their number, and at the top of each page will have the number that the rotation is starting with. Dancers are grouped by which trad set they are dancing but the start number is random, so for example they might start in the middle of the Blackbirds, cycle through the rest of the trad sets, and finish up with a few more Blackbirds. As I said, this is how they have done it for the past few years, if this is not all set in stone I'm sure someone will correct me or provide further information. Hope that helps
