I'm finding it discouraging that there are almost no feises anymore that don't have a separate age category covering college dancers. Just went to sign up for Forbes, 16+. It's like apples and oranges having dancers taking 4 plus classes a week compete with dancers who may not have had a class in months or been able to dance in their hardshoes for months.

[> [> Subject: No disgusted with you and your nasty condescending tone actually. At 18 and over, balancing college and dance is extremely challenging. Not only do most college dancers have to practice on their own, they maystruggle with finding adequate space in which to practice (more)

It is true that in a combined group you can find a challenging competition and that the chance to get judges feedback is what it's really about. These dancers are well past the age of whining about not getting a trophy for gods sake. The OP is correct however to point out the logistical differences of being 16 and able to focus primarily on dance and being a college student, living away from home with minimal time in their school's studio, working with their own TC. The nasty crap that is spewed on this board is one thing all parents of older dancers are glad to leave behind once their dancer retires, I can tell you that!

And, through the marks you'll be able to garner a reasonable idea of where you rank among the 18&O dancers there.

I agree completely that 18&O categories are really great, but you can still make 16&O comp a very useful experience.

[> Subject: I agree with original poster. If they can have 3 or 4 competitors in the lower age groups, why do they feel the need to combine the top 7 age groups into one category. Last year, there were 58 competitors registered for this comp. And yes, they did split it into 2 groups but personally they should do double age groups for the top 7 groups.

[> Subject: Alright, I disagree with OP on "being a dancer who can't go to class" because that sounds like a cop out, I'm a college grad with a job and still dancing at class. BUT I do agree the age groups are ridiculous. Why do we have to compete against 17 year olds when a bunch of us are 20 plus years old? It is nonsense frankly

There are dancers who don't live close enough to go home for classes and might not be near another school. They rely on practicing on their own and going to class when home on break

[> [> Subject: Not sure how you can "disagree" with someone about whether they can get to class. Has it occurred to you that sometimes a dancer is a freshman in a college where they're not allowed to have a car and can't get to a dance class via public transportation?

[> Subject: The syllabus has it split into different age groups for Forbes feis...look at that. It'll split up the ages into much more appropriate splits. They only have the single comp # to sign up under.

[> [> [> Subject: Listing A, B, C, D does not mean it is split into 4 groups; or that would mean every age group was split into 4. Usually means R/HP, S/J, R/J, or S/HP, not separate ages.
