Subject: Anyone else hear that a US O (Western region) has been moved to mid January?

I don't think I'd mind if our O did the same...it would allow more time in-studio for all the kids that took some time off during the height of the pandemic.

January is usually the peak of cold and flu season in New England and right after the holidays when people have all been getting together with family indoors. November seems safer, as the numbers in New England have been doing better than the rest of the country.

[> [> Subject: My thoughts exactly. Anything planned for January in NE is iffy at best given the weather, and there's no way to know how bad the virus could get once everyone is stuck indoors again when the cold gets extreme.

[> [> [> [> Subject: Of course it is. But how many January events have had to be canceled due to weather in NE? A lot! And what would be the logic behind it? I haven't heard that the virus will be gone, or present only at greatly reduced levels, in January. And with over 60% of Americans saying they will refuse to have the vaccine whenever it comes out, I don't see that making much of a dent either. Unless of course the NEO made proof of vaccination a requirement for participation. That might work.

Mid America O syllabus- starting on page 9 is the solo comp information - this one is a qualifier- it spells it out.

Can't imagine Mid America gets to be a qualifier but others don't. So the continued worry about whether or not an O will be a qualifier should stop - lots to worry about - let's drop this one off of the list.

[> [> [> Subject: I'm still concerned. How is it fair if some regions have to cancel their Os and others have them as qualifiers? Then the regions that couldn't manage it, due to virus levels or whatever, end up with only their 2019 WQs entered in the next Worlds whereas the more fortunate regions that were able to hold theirs will have both 2019 and 2020 WQs at the next Worlds?

This pandemic really stinks on so many levels. but I say, if a kid can go to an O - let it be a qualifier. And it seems CLRG is on the same page with that.

If my kid is locked out because of conservative management of the pandemic by the NE-so be it. I won't necessarily agree with it (unless numbers start trending dangerously up) but I'll live with it.

It will be hard to explain to her the reason others got to go to their O, but we all deal with these parenting challenges as they come our way... and have probably gotten better at managing them with so many recent disappointments. :(

Not fair - but none of this is, really.

[> [> [> [> [> Subject: Exactly! If other regions can get out of their own way and host an O, then good for them and their dancers. As for our region—we shall see. Other sports are figuring it out. How embarrassing if other regions can do the same and we cannot.

hardly any restrictions on size of event= more lenient when it comes to numbers because they use capacity rather than a hard and fast number as other NE states do.

Maybe NH is a better choice because they don't have an active "red list"as other NE states do.

no one is going to run an event in NH without meeting capacity requirements or without putting significant covid-19 precautions in place. if those precautions are put in place, there is an excellent chance that a safe event can be run.

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> Subject: Author % is exactly right. OF COURSE NH or anywhere O is run will be keeping safety precautions at the forefront.- just like Florida, CO, and other states have been doing. We are seeing other regions planning SAFE OIreachta - Mid A also changing states since covid lockdowns in IL are similar to those in MA/CT. it makes sense for NH to host

Nassau County AOH feis has been cancelled. Haven't heard any word about any concrete plans for the O- venue/state/number of days, etc.- with the event only a couple months away (if they keep the same weekend as usual).

Starting to seriously wonder if this is going to happen for our kids. Not looking forward to having this particular talk with my child if it is cancelled. DD has been working overtime during the quarantine and is still working hard even though school has started.

Her long term goal this whole time has been geared towards the O- it's simple - she wants to get a better result this year than last.

I know (in theory) that she should be working to better herself as a dancer in general - set smaller achievable goals, etc.---BUT she is a kid that loves and thrives on competition- and not having that competition has been tough- so the competition goal is really what drives her to continue -even in the midst of a pandemic. I'm guessing she is not alone in this.

I also know that events can happen safely with proper restrictions and guidelines- And we all know that large-ish feiseanna have run in the US without gaining the dreaded superspreader status.

I guess I'm just really worried that the NE is not going to pursue all possible avenues to try to make the O happen... to include looking at capacity driven NE states (Hi there NH!) and maybe even look outside of the NE for venues (Hello NJ!). It would be a real bummer to see successful Oireachtas happen all around us- and not have the same option for our kids.

Vent over. (thanks for reading)

In the last few weeks, Western Canada has moved to January, Western US has moved to January. Mid America has found a new venue in Indianapolis. I'm guessing that if other regions manage to pull it off, NER is going to look REALLY bad if we can't figure out how to do it. Imagine 6 out of 7 regions holding an Oireachtas and only NER can't manage it? I think the fact that other regions are going forward is going to make NER double the efforts. My guess is that we will also move to January.

I hope at least a limited number of Trads can happen- so many kids only have the opportunity to do the O because of Trads- but I do understand the need to keep numbers down.
