In reply to: Newly Selfish 's message, "I no longer 'loan' my dd's solo or school costume. Can't stand when folks are nice when they need it but nasty the rest of the time. Let them put out the $ like I had to!" on 05:36:27 07/24/08 Thu

My daughter's school does a show with a major performer every year, and many dancers participate. About a month before the show the teacher asked my daughter (age 11) to loan a new (to our school) dancer, that we did not know, her "old" dress for the show, and to bring it to the next practice for this girl to try on. This "old" dress was my daughter's first ID dress, it took me 6 months to hand embroider it, and is an important keepsake. We brought the dress to the next practice and the child tried it on -- it fit properly, so I agreed that she could borrow it for the show. The child was playing and eating while wearing the dress and her mother did not seem to care. I asked the child to put the dress back in the dress bag as it was for dancing in the show only. After we got home we realized that the heirloom dress was not in the dress bag, so returned to the practice hall to search for it. It was no where to be found, and both my daughter and I were extremely upset. The next day at class my daughter asked her teacher and the other dancers if anyone had accidentally picked it up -- no one had. She was in tears when I picked her up, sobbing that she had wanted to save that dress in case she ever had a little girl who danced. At our school's feis the next week, my daughter spotted the dancer who had tried on the dress was wearing an old style school costume. She ran over to me saying "I think that new girl stole my dress!" Trying to contain my anger and hurt, I approached the mother, asking her if the dress her daughter was wearing belonged to my daughter. She stated her husband told her that the teacher gave her daughter a dress at show practice last week when he picked her up.I told her that my daughter's dress was taken without our consent or knowledge at that practice, and that I needed to know if that was my daughter's dress and asked her to check inside to see if there were initials embroidered in the lining. It was her dress. The mother became infuriated with me, telling me I was calling her daughter a thief, and threw that dress at me. I spoke later with the teacher who assured me that she had not seen the dress after the child tried it on and would never "give away" another dancer's dress. The teacher then confronted the dancer and her mother, and the truth came out. The child wanted a dress for the feis, so pretended to put it back in the dress bag, but in reality stuffed it into her backpack then lied to her father when he picked her up. The teacher then told the mother and dancer that she was sure we would have loaned her the dress for the feis if they had been honest about the situaltion. Painful lesson learned!

Oh it wasn't "loaned" to the dancer it fit, it was given to her and then became hers until she outgrew it. Cost me $750, DD gets 1 year out of it, and then my dd stuck with 3 year old dress that several other dancers had worn before her. I honestly felt I should have had some monetary compensation, after all I paid a lot of money for a brand new dress that my dd only wore a few times that year (O and dance-outs), as she competed in her solo dress. So not fair!! (NT)Simply shocked and amazed04:01:52 07/25/08 Fri
I would have offered to sell it to the child it fit for $600, then buy the 3 year old dress for $300.mom07:15:47 07/25/08 Fri
