Dear Sir/Madam
As you may know Brighton and Hove has an perpetual Sea defence problem, with an annual budget of approx. £70k which is provided from Council Tax revenues to enable the Council's stock of defences (timber groynes and concrete seawalls etc.) to be maintained. The majority of this money goes on replacing the beaches stones, an ongoing all year round task. Although the majority of damage is done by the sea errosion there is also another conciderably large culprite, the general public. People have been enjoying Brighton and Hoves fine beaches for centuries, with a high turn over of vistors it is one of the South easts most popular resorts. Unforchanatly far to many of theses visitors take away momentos with them, namely beach pebbles.
After the Governments success with its recent Gun amnesty campaign, Brighton and Hove council has decided to run a similar one. From May 15th through to July 1st we are holding our first Pebble Amnesty, anyone can safely return any beach stone to Brighton and Hove council with out fear of criminal prosecution.
Obviously most people will not want to travel to Brighton just to hand in their stolen rocks, so we have provided an address for you to mail them to, Just place your stone in an envelope (or a parcel for larger returns) and send it to:
