In general CB handsets do not work very well as the antenna is far to short for the frequency.

PMR446 should work better but range will suffer when operating from inside a car as the metal body cuts down the signals.

I have not used the 3030 and I'm not aware of any mods to increase the power, but as for the 5050 I can say that they work very well and the extra output power is very useful.

If your vehicles are staying fairly close to each other you should not have a problem using PMR446. I can talk from my mobile to home around town without any major reception problems, this being up to a distance of about 1.5 miles.
