PMR radios will do the job just great and I cant see any problems. It may be a good idea to use CTCSS tones so you dont hear anyone else using the channels but if the channels are quiet in your area you may not have to do this.

Argos has several cheap radios in pairs or even quad packs. ASDA also sell some cheap radios.

I would get a set with a drop in charger to make it easier to recharge the units.
