Some radios can be modified (The XT1000 for example) and they do have 10 PMR446 channels but I would think that it's more likely that:

Either:

This was a "CODE" for them to switch channel without other people knowing where they were going.

OR maybe they were talking about the CTCSS codes.

OR maybe they have pre-programmed professional radios some of which have up to 99 preset channel/ctcss combinations.
