The other theatre was the Eclipse and the variety store was run by a family named Reid (they moved to just east of Broadview on Gerrard and opened a small tropical fish store). My favourite at Reids variety was sponge toffee that they made themselves.
The Eclipse was on the east side of Parlaiment just north of Oak St and was a great matinee movie house as was the Parliament theatre on the east side of Parliament between Gerrard St. and Spruce St.
The other theatre on the east side of Parliament was the Carleton just north of Carleton St. but it was not a good theatre for us kids as it showed mainly adult type movies, not porn but movies for grown ups such as Musicals, love stories, etc. The only way to get in as a kid was to stand outside and ask a grown up to take you in and hope that he was not a pervert, you took your chances because you had to sit with him/them so that the employee walking the aisles wouldn't kick you out. If it was an adult entertainment movie your chances of getting in were pretty slim. It also cost more for us kids to get in and we usually didn't have any money so sometimes we just snuck in and hid when anyone with a flashlight came down the aisle.
