One of the things I learned from Adrian, all those years ago, was that gardening is an art of removal as much as nuture.

Pruning must be done carefully, calculatedly, objectively.

Sometimes it seems almost cruel, wasteful, to substantially cut back on a healthy plant. I know – dispassionately – that it is in the best interest of the plant as a whole, to cut this branch, or pinch back this flower. And yet, in a small, secret part of my mind, it saddens me to prune healthy growth.

But it is necessary.

And regret is a dangerous emotion.
