and all the soft, slight touches of what makes a relationship a *relationship*. I don't think Michael *loved* Elena, but I *do* think he cared for her, cared about her deeply.

He opened the refrigerator to get a bottle of water, and saw the bowl of oranges sitting on the counter, next to the sleek Italian juicer Elena gave him for his birthday last year. "I know how much you like fresh juice in the morning" she said as he peeled back the wrapping paper, so pleased with herself as he thanked her with a kiss. She'd already cleared a spot in the kitchen next to the pantry, happy to have another visible link to her peripatetic husband. She'd told him that she liked having his things around when he wasn't there, to remind her of him. She liked to organize their house around what she thought were his habits and his preferences, evidence of the person she believed him to be.

Such a lovely glimpse of what marriage is about, in the small details. And this is aching painful for Elena, even though we never see her - to have this lovely house and (she thinks) a lovely man for her husband and yet she's always alone and lonely...

*sigh*

Such a lovely story.
