She thought she was looking quite genuine, when he returned to her, but the producer put his arm around her waist, whispering, "Cheer up a little. You shouldn't let these people frighten you." She hadn't realized that she was doing this but tried to change her expression, nonetheless. He took her arm, nodding once she apparently accomplished what he wanted, and led her off to meet some people. Her night, it seemed, was just beginning.

This fact brought back some of the excitement, the first stop one she wanted most--at least in a certain way--Michael and Kitty nodding at the man, as he led her along. True, she had been continuing her stand-in work for over a week now, but she had still had little chance for much conversation with the pair--well, other than that strange bit of advice the woman had given her her first day. She had come to understand it, too, later, saw that the woman had meant well; she even felt sorry for her. Samuelle was so handsome, was a great catch, but he was so masculine that he would never end a woman's lessons. He was probably even more demanding than Perry! She almost shuddered, covering it with her smile. The actress was probably just in too much pain to be nice. After all, if Perry made his demands on her as much as Samuelle must with Kitty--Eek!

She managed not to let this thought show, or so she believed, had forgiven the actress completely. Of course, it was possible too that she was just trying to warn her that the standards of "good girls" were different here, was trying to give her a way out. But she didn't want one, not now. Perry had promised her. She *would* be a star. All she had to do was wait her turn.

There were so many truths the girl didn't understand, but the couple before her wasn’t sharing her ignorance. While they were talking to Bauer, if only rather distantly, Michael's arm had wrapped around his partner completely, holding her very close--his gaze warning the producer to stay away. The man barely took it in, of course, so rarely decided to, but it would have to be enough. There was only so much anyone could do in public.

Despite this moment, and the producer's usual, revolting presence on set, the pair's lives were going much better lately. Bauer was too smart to press his luck--and they were too united to let him. Their relationship was once again close, their fears in check, for now; Nikita was even regaining a little weight, all of her strength returning. And it was because of all of this that they were able to face the man in relative peace.

Their conversation was brief, then, if supposedly friendly, Bauer finally leaving with his usual smug look--his filthy glance at Nikita only making her feel slightly ill. The tightening of Michael's arm around her comforted her, as well, reminded her of the truth. She wasn't Bauer's to have. For now, at least, she was safe.

It had only partly been the producer who had gained her attention, however, the young girl with him making her wonder yet again. Sondra had evidently not listened to her advice that first day, and the look in her eyes tonight showed that many of the fates she had feared for her had definitely come to pass; something in her sank, pondering the horrors she must have faced. If only there were something she could do . . .

"Michael?" she whispered, glad that they were just isolated enough to talk, if they were very careful. Still, she couldn't get the sickening sensation out of her heart. To be anywhere near a man like that . . .

Her partner understood, holding her closer, as he answered her unspoken plea, talking into her hair. "What could you do to help her, 'Kita?" He turned away for a second, nodding at another guest, before speaking so softly again. "Do you think she would even want it?"

There was a shaky breath for a moment, before the actress pulled herself back together, smiling at the crowd--leaving her thoughts to herself alone. Unfortunately, she realized that he was right, the look in the girl's eyes strongly suggesting that it wasn't simply an opportunity for escape she was looking for. If it had been, as it had with Maria's flight from Mijovich, that was one thing. But to have to convince the girl first that she should be running made the whole thing seem impossible; her heart sank slightly. There was only so much anyone could do for the seriously deluded.

Nikita hated this fact but didn't argue, knowing her partner was correct. They were moving through the crowd, when she spoke quietly again--once there was a chance. "It's not right."

"It never will be," he breathed in response. His next words were interrupted by a brief conversation with another couple of producers, but the fierce truth of them lingered. "Not ever."

They were in unison this time--fortunately--neither one arguing that the girl was unimportant but both realizing that she was impossible to save. The actress was comforted by their agreement but little else. There was just no way to wholly accept that anyone, no matter how delusionally naive, should have to face such a fate.

It was slightly farther into the room, when she told him her real fear, her soul turning in the last few moments--the need for reassurance so deep. "Please don't let that happen to me, Michael." She had to swallow heavily. "Please."

It was then that he showed how little appearances sometimes meant to him, stopping in the middle of the floor, turning her towards him--his gaze so strong, so truthful. A second later, he leaned in, kissing her cheek. "In under two weeks, I'm marrying you for the world to see, 'Kita." His mouth was on her ear. "I will never let anyone hurt you."

His promise was solemn, the truth of his soul, and her eyes were nearly teary in love. A moment later, he pulled her to him, kissing her--both only half-noticing that the room around them seemed to have stopped. Wherever they were, whatever the dangers, they were still one. And the town could simply talk as much as it wanted about their love.
