Subject: We picked up his ashes today
In reply to: DW 's message, "Nickie died as I drove up the driveway" on 21:01:52 07/25/07 Wed

He weighs a bit more than Myrtle and I don't think he'll fit in the same drawer.

I'm kind of tired. I keep seeing his last couple minutes playing through. He died at pretty much the same spot where I first found him injured last year. ...and this sounds bad, but how he moved reminded me of the man who died in our neighbor's front yard when we lived in NW Denver. ...It's a good thing sometimes to have a mind that links up lots of little pieces but at times like this I wish I did not cross-reference so well.

....

We went to the animal shelter where we left the kitten. We intended to adopt him, but we did not. We still might, but while we think he would fit in well and be easy to love, he is not what we need nor is he really what we want ...tonight. On Sunday I may change my mind.

At the same shelter is a medium brindle dog with blue eyes, labeled 'catahoula'. He's in the stray hold area so we could find him online but not see him in person. Last time I jumped on an quick replacemnt we got that poor sick shelter kitty and I lost a quick 2 grand.

Now, I'm more inclined to see these tempting, homeless dogs as a cruel joke than a gift. (You may remember that I once said it is our habit to replace an animal soon after losing one.) It's totally our choice at this point. We have this goal to be down to two or three dogs in 10 years. In 10 years we will have lost Dixie (Danes don't usually reach 13) and probably Blaze (he'd be 16). Chilili could go by 13 too. Sooo ... if we want to go back to 4 dogs now we aren't compromising our goal, just complicating our lives a little.

It's not the blue-eyed brindle we want. We encoutered a female hound mix who is submissive and I would really like at least one dog that is not a 'la-la can't hear you' kind of dog. This hound might be that ...but probably not as hounds are kind of stubborn. (Don't know much about hounds, really.) This one is a visual work of art. Looking at her is like seeing an impressionistic painting. She's got those piebald spots of a hound but the spots are brindle. her white is ticked in browns and reds. Beautiful head with lovely hound ears and eyes who hold a sadness beyond the normal hound soulfullness.

No, we did not bring her home either. It's a diversion mostly ...looking. :-( We have a little black shark in the house who makes it hard to bring home strangers.

Still, whatever we bring home, whenever it is, we'll have to keep the Chilili separate. (I pretty sure I'm going to spay her in October. ...that's hard for me because she is very conformationally correct. I can't be quite a certain about her working instincts but they sure seem to be online. (She's one heck of a 'free' dog. The personality is great with people ...it's just not so great with other dogs and that is okay for the breed (but not for me).

*sigh* Too much on my mind but that is a better option than seeing Nickie drop and die for the 50th time today.
