Once there was a time when most people controlled the fertility of their dogs without resorting to surgery. Now people are so far removed from lives built on 'animal husbandry' they don't have a clue about how or why they should do this.

As a social practice, the owners, the animals (as a group but not always as an individual) and society benefits from early spay/neuter. Those who push the public for this have to have a 'selfless' reason to further motivate people and to over come resistance .... so to counter 'it makes my dog fat' they come up with some health benefits, some of which are obvious and some which seem to be bordering on urban myth.

Annoying, isn't it? There is no 'one-size-fits-all' best for our pets. Like the rest of life, you just have to do you best to make an informed choice.

I'd think that in the case of incontinence a lot depends on the skill of the vet. I'm still waiting to see people adopt the Australian spay method I was told about in 1992. The incision is through the side wall ...smaller hole, less chance of reopening, less chance of cutting into things that cause incontinence, faster recovery. It's takes more skill and more time to do it, though. I've been waiting so long to hear about it that I'm beginning to think somebody was telling me a tall story.

...that's part of why I wanted to keep my dogs intact. Yes, because we thought we would show them, but also to face reality instead of this sanitized cartoon nonsense people the popular culture wants us to live in. Sooooo.... after a few years overall, I do not think dealing with a female in heat has been such a mess in terms of cleanliness. It's been a nightmare in terms of hormonal swings though. I'm spaying Chilili in October...for multiple reasons such as there are no shows in this state, she's snarky, and we are too busy and our life has gone in a different direction.

I'd like to neuter Blaze, but don't really have a reason to. He marks a little, but so did a neutered male we once had. If we ever move some place where keeping him intact costs a fortune, maybe then. (Albuquerque charges $250 a year for each intact animal, and you can have only 2 ...very anti hobby breeder .... all in the guise of reducing pet overpopulation. Like the people who are BYBs will pay the $250 when they didn't license their dogs for $20.
