Subject: My big, sweet girl....

Elsa is at the bridge, reunited with her friends that have been missing her. We are all very sad and miss her terribly, but on the other hand, we feel very fortunate to have had her for 12 years, 3 months during which time she remained very healthy and happy.

She had been slowing more and the more the past month, especially the last two weeks, but on Monday night she was breathing strangely and I could tell she was not comfortable. I took her to the vet on Tuesday AM and she was in heart failure due to fluids around her heart and in her abdomen. They drained the fluid and hoped that we would see a big turn around, but that was not the case. The vet said that most likely meant that there was something else going on (like cancer in one or more of her organs) and that given the circumstance, he would make the same decision. Elsa hadn't eaten for a couple of days by then and still refused to eat Tues. night or Wed. AM. I could tell she was not feeling herself and that she was ready to join her good friends at the bridge.

Elsa left us late Wed. afternoon. It isn't the same with no Elsa to pat; no big, lumbering girl to greet us; no big, black smiling eyes telling us how much she loved us. No matter the time, it always seems too soon to say goodbye.... :-(
