Don't have any real sage advice on the collar, however I do know that with them, ya really need to be there all the time as they have a way of getting them hung up on things and it puts the dog into a real panic.

As far as not using the collar, we tried to keep Zack's off while we were there just to minimize the aggravation he had in getting out the dog door. Just have to watch like a hawk 'cause they will pick at or lick the incision....

In the crate? never tried it. Smooth insides... probably OK.
