Subject: Children and Beauty Pageants

Author:
By Kareen Nussbaum
[Edit]

Date Posted: 06/17/09 3:23:01pm

For those of you who were disturbed by the airing of the A&E Special on Beauty Pageants, here are the well-balanced thoughts of a student at Brooklyn College, Kareen Nussbaum, who submitted this paper to her professor, Dr. Vey. She received an "A" for this effort, and when you read her Research Paper you will see why.
---Paul Petersen

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Children and Beauty Pageants
By Kareen Nussbaum

Beauty pageants became part of the American society in the 1920's. Child beauty pageants began in the 1960's. Child beauty pageants consist of modeling sportswear, evening attire, dance and talent. The children are judged based on individuality in looks, capability, poise, perfection and confidence. As the judges call it, "the complete package". School aged children were researched based on the influence competition has on their education and self-confidence. Children between the ages of six and twelve were considered as school aged and were researched in this work. These are children that are relatively new to school education due to their young age, they are required by law to receive education, and are still impressionable by their parents. The children are divided into age groups so the competition would be objective for the participants. Stage mothers were taken into consideration involving the child's management, assessing that the mother introduced the child into the pageantry world. There are no laws concerning beauty pageants in New York, Texas, Massachusetts, Arkansas, California, Vermont and Maine so therefore it is presumed that there are no laws concerning beauty pageants. Beauty pageant history, regulations, guidelines, and controlling authorities are researched, along with their effectiveness and recommendations.

Beauty pageants originated as a marketing tool in 1921 by an Atlantic City hotel owner who wanted the city's tourists to remain in town longer. A local news reporter started the infamous term, still used today by saying, "lets call her 'Miss America'!" Pageants were introduced into the lives of Americans and became a major event, although they were discontinued from 1929-1932 due to the Great Depression.

As the years progressed, pageants served as political, educational and entertaining events. Pageants offered scholarships and helped beneficial programs. Marking a racial breakthrough, in 1983 Vanessa Williams becomes the first African-American titled Miss America. In 1994 the first handicapped woman wins the title of Miss America. The pageantry world helps introduce a face to the faceless troubles of racism, handicaps and illnesses.

According to the Attorney General of the Department of Justice in California, "there is no law that prescribes how a pageant must be managed, the rules are set by each contest promoter." Pageants are usually operated by for-profit organizations that produce a local, state or national contest that appeal to many age groups for different reasons. Some mothers lie about their child's age so the child can appear more mature and poised for that age group; now some pageants require birth certificates along with the entry forms to validate age. Beauty pageants are one of the fastest growing businesses in America grossing over 5 billion dollars (Coleman, Phyllis). The prizes differ depending on the size of the contest; radios, bicycles, grants, cash awards, trophies and tiaras are some examples. Some of the criteria considered in judging a pageant are writing skills, interviews, personality, looks, confidence and talent, depending on the specific competition. There is a fee required in entering a pageant, which may include entry, rental fees, awards, administrative costs and company profits. Participants have other expenses like clothing, hair, make-up and sometimes hiring a make-up artist, travel, food and lodging. According to the Better Business Bureau, at least one state has a requirement for new promoters within the state to place a deposit in order to protect entry fees of contestants. Although none of the states researched have that law.

Individual beauty pageants set their own guidelines for their participants, since they are exempt from the federal child labor laws (FairLabor standards Act, 1938). Child pageant contestants are not considered to be "working" children although they receive money and prizes for their performances and practice for hours per week to achieve those goals. A beauty pageant is operated in a couple of ways, either corporate sponsors, where the competitors must meet eligibility requirements to participate. The second way of operating a pageant is by putting the responsibility on the participants. The applicants are responsible for travel, lodging, entry fees, wardrobe, and sometimes the cost of the crown and prizes. Generally the contestants are required to get sponsors, sell tickets and advertise to compensate for expenses.

In Universal Royalty pageant, the country's largest child beauty pageant, all contestants receive an award for participating. There are sixty contestants from the age of zero to thirty years old, all divided into different age groups. As soon as the child can sit up on her/his own s/he can enter the pageant. A competition is held usually every few weeks. There is a minimum cost of $545 to enter the pageant, which covers basic entry fees. Another $395 is needed for the maximum options of this pageant. The average cost of the pageant is about $655 which includes the formal wear, sports wear and dance. The average cost does not include travel, hotel and food, which can be up to an extra two hundred dollars. According to several stage mothers participating in Universal Royalty, dresses for sports and formal wear can cost up to $12,000 with a minimum of $1500. The grand supreme winner receives one thousand dollars in cash, ten-inch crystal crown, six-foot trophy, supreme entry paid in full to nationals, tote bag, satin rhinestone banner, teddy bear, bouquet of long stem red roses, gifts, video of the pageant, and photo on advertisement of beauty pageant. The participants are also required to bring gifts to the winning king and queen. Different beauty pageants offer optional competitions inside the pagean, like decorating your door, dad competition and talent. In Universal Royalty, family values are enforced. Therefore, the dad competition is free of charge and there is a fifty-dollar award and a plaque for the winner. Based on the competition, the child is judged differently, points are scored in each domain of the pageant, and the most overall points earn the participant the grand supreme prize. Prizes for overall photogenic are prejudged from photos sent before the pageant. Each part of the competition has an entry fee to participate.

Annette Hill is the director of Universal Royalty, she believes in an organized and professional competition. Annette was a former child pageant competitor, and also had her daughters participate. Seven years ago she decided to open a pageant of her own. She enforces family values by making a dad competition, which includes the fathers in the competition as well. According to Charles Dunn, publisher of Pageantry Magazine, "Every year beauty pageants show off 100,000 children under the age of twelve." Usually the mothers are the controlling authority over the competitors. The inexperienced mothers seem more pleased with any award the child receives at the pageant and less critical of the child's mistakes on stage contrary to the experienced moms who seem more disappointed than their child to receive a lower-classed award than imagined. "There is no chance for a mistake", as said by Annette Hill on her own pageant.

Preparing for the pageant requires time and patience, hair lasting around an hour and forty-five minutes, make-up around an hour. Different performances for every pageant require some participants to practice for about seven hours a week. Stage mothers for the eight to ten age group in Universal Royalty, say it is worth all the trouble and effort since it instills happiness, poise in front of a crowd, confidence, pride and a sense of accomplishment. In this particular event, the eight to ten age group was the toughest competition in Universal Royalty because three of the girls were more experienced, one girl even having her mom coach other pageantry children. For example, Sabra Johnson, a ten year old experienced child contestant, one of the threatening ingredients in this competition has aspirations of landing a major modeling career and until then, modeling at the pageants. Sabra started competing in pageants at the age of four and was awarded three hundred trophies. While the child was interviewed by A&E Network she kept looking over at her mom for reassurance of her thoughts. She never mentioned coming education; she solely relied on her appearance for her future.

In a phone conversation, Annette Hill stated that pageants are like extra curricular activities in school; they should not interfere with schooling. The most participants should ever miss is a half a day on Friday for traveling purposes. Pageants are normally performed on weekends; practice is accomplished after school so, therefore, education should not be an issue. The real concern should be on future education needs; all of the girls aged eight to ten interviewed by A&E Network were not concerned with further education. They had false aspirations. One participant named Thumper Gosney has aspirations of becoming a model when she grows up; the chances of Thumper landing a major modeling career are slim to none. According to the Better Business Bureau, not too many pageantry competitors land modeling careers when they mature.

William Pinsof, a clinical psychologist and president of the Family Institute at Northwestern University said, " Being a little Barbie doll says your body has to be a certain way and your hair has to be a certain way. In girls particularly, this can unleash a whole complex of destructive self-experiences that can lead to eating disorders and all kinds of body distortions in terms of body image." Traveling, stress and competition are everyday aspects of an adult's life, an average day of an adult requires at least these three aspects to make it to lunch hour, but at the age of eight, stress about body ideals, modeling, and trophies should not come into existence. Since there are no set rules concerning promoters, organizers and participants, pageants are neglected by laws governing them. Organizers want to earn money and are not concerned with the need to protect their participants, and they don't. According to Phyllis Coleman, a professor of law at Nova Southeastern University, 3,000 pageants attract 250,000 children per year. According to the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment and Adoption Reform Act, child abuse is defined as, "the physical or mental injury, sexual abuse or exploitation of a child under circumstances which indicate the child's health or welfare is harmed or threatened." Most stage mothers claim that their child wanted to enter the pageant on her own. Does an eight-year-old girl know what is best for her? In 1996 seven-year-old Jessica Duboff died when her parents allowed her to fly a plane across the country because she liked it. Should parents rely on their children to know what is best for them?

Child abuse is defined as exploitation of a child, are these parents exploiting their child beauties? On a study done by Levey who researched child beauty pageants of the two to six age group for the Harvard University Gazette, she interviewed forty-one pageant mothers who participate in an average of five pageants per year. Levey concluded that mothers of lower-income and education, enter their children in pageants because they want their children to learn the proper skills necessary to move up the social scale. One stage mother said, "I want my child to be aware that there's going to be somebody better than her. It's a hard thing to learn, it was for me, and I want her to start early." Parents with higher incomes and education beyond high school often justify pageants by explaining that competition is essential for their children to become successful. According to Levey, the upper class mothers want their daughters to become lawyers, doctors or to have professional careers.

"Pageants are hard and you try to remember all those steps, sometimes they give me crowns that are hard to balance", says Gabrielle, a child participant since eleven months of age. At five years old, Gabrielle wants to quit the pageant experience and her mother respects her decision. This stage mother is an opposing example of the aggressive behavior that is confronted throughout the pageants; Gabrielle's mom accepts her decision and honors it. Gabrielle now hopes to start a modeling career, once again no mention of further education. "It's a little girl dream, dreams have to start somewhere", says Dorothy, a sixteen year old, competing for twelve years. That's true, dreams do start from somewhere, maybe a movie, book or even a person, but at the age of four and younger, is it always right to start acting out the dream? Dreams are not always meant to be fulfilled, sometimes they are not in our power to accomplish, but do we need to know the harsh realities of unfulfilled dreams and disappointment at such a tender age. Laws and regulations are needed for this arena; organizers, and worst of all, parents are manipulating innocent kids. Mothers take their kids and live vicariously through them. In order to improve the inadequacy of pageant regulation, every state should pass the bonding law, which states that a deposit is required for new promoters to assert the security of the participants. This only exists in a few states, none of which researched here. There should be guidelines for the hours of work on stage, practice and travel. Organizers should be required to attain a certificate allowing them to work with children. Make-up and hair should be limited as to not enforce sexuality in such a young age. All the participants should receive some kind of an award for participating, reducing the disappointment. Although education is not necessarily effected at the present moment, the participating children do not plan ahead based on their mind but on their appearances, most talked about modeling as the next step. On the A&E Network interview, all the experienced girls, while talking, looked at their stage mothers for reassurance of the last utterance spoken. If the girls were asked a question, the mother sitting very close to her daughter corrected any forgotten words, as if rehearsed.

Beauty pageants are one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. The government should regulate such an extensive enterprise, to provide safety, especially since it deals with children. The government protects the juvenile's health from smoking and drinking and provides education and safety. Children have rights and laws guarding them against manipulative adults, aren't these pageants a marketing tool aimed at children? JonBenét Ramsey's death influenced the public to believe that all pageants promote sexuality and mistreatment, but there are always two sides to every story. Throughout the research, pageants proved to be both a negative and positive influence depending on their surroundings. Pageants that regulate make-up usage, sexuality and competition are recognized to be great experiences for children. For example, Beatriz Gill a child pageant director and a former child participant, does not allow make-up or snug costumes in her pageants. Beatriz is one of many that have a positive outlook on pageants, she believes that pageants helped her become confident and self-assured. On the other hand, many of the pageants researched did allow excessive make-up, hair and clothing. Some had exceptional qualities like offering awards for all participants. I believe that pageants have a long road before achieving a safe environment for children without introducing them to competition, sexuality and disappointment too early in life.

Thank you for all the positive response and interest in the new American Image National Pageant! I'm glad so many of you like what we're doing to create a system that provides the things you’re looking for at an affordable price, particularly in today's challenging economic times. I believe it's more important than ever to promote the achievements of American women of all ages! We are strong leaders in our communities, businesses, schools, churches, and more and a powerful source of inspiration to so many others. The American Image National Pageant team is committed to providing a first-class pageant experience for all of our delegates. We're here to help you reach for your goals and meet wonderful people who'll inspire you as well.

We've had several exciting developments in the last two weeks that I want to share. First, I'm pleased to announce that we have added a new consultant to the American Image National Pageant Team. Mrs. Sherry Strother will be our Guest Director for the 2009 American Image National Pageant. Sherry is a nationally known contestant, director, mistress of ceremonies, and judge in the US pageant industry. As a self-taught contestant and winner of state and national titles including Mrs. United Nation U.S. 1998 and Mrs. American Renaissance 2003, she has extensive insight into what it takes to come out on top in pageant competition. Sherry has over twenty-five years’ experience in the world of beauty and is the author of "Crowning Success, The Ultimate Guide for Mrs. Competition." Sherry is a well-admired and sought-after consultant and will ensure that the American Image National Pageant competition is second to none.

We are also recruiting make-up artists, hair-stylists and coaches to work with our delegates. Reggie Lewis, our choreographer and member of the American Image National Pageant Team, will be offering an exclusive Pageant coaching workshop during pageant weekend. We'll be offering hair and make-up workshops, and individual artists and stylists will be available for private sessions.

The American Image National Team will be on the road for the next several months meeting delegates, recruiting contestants and promoting the positive influence and community service associated with American pageantry. I have just returned from a Pageant promotion cruise and shopping excursion in the Bahamas where I found some fabulous new delegates and additional prizes. Ginny Meerman, our 2008 Ambassadorial Queen, was a judge at the Florida International Pageant last weekend and returned with great compliments about their delegates, pageant production and warm reception of the American Image Pageant system. We’ll be on the road again in October for the All American Pageant in Myrtle Beach, SC October 2nd - 4th, and then in Charleston, SC for an official pageant visit to our host city and public unveiling of our 2009 pageant.

If you are interested in competing in our inaugural 2009 pageant, you can download the pageant application from our website at www.americanimagenationalpageants.com. All applications submitted before the October national announcement will receive first priority. Thanks! Deb Dyer

Duran Events announces a new pageant for Arizona!
Arizona's Perfect Teen & Perfect Miss

Arizona's Perfect Teen & Miss

Michele Duran Skroch (skroch), director of Arizona American Coed Pageants
and judge in multiple pageant systems is bringing a nationally supported
pageant to the state as an opportunity for girls and women ages 13-29.
We invite you to learn more through this email and take a
look at the website at http://az-perfect.com/.

America's Perfect Miss and America's Perfect Teen is designed for all young
women, (ages 13-15, 16-19, 20-29) from every state in America, and DC, who
love the stage, want to hold a local, state and even national title, and
carry this new found celebrity status to a professional modeling or acting
career with the South Florida Modeling and Talent Agency: Famous Faces.
Create exciting memories, make new friendships with young women from
around the country, and experience a worthwhile, organized event. America's
Perfect Teen & America's Perfect Miss is an outlet for you to achieve
success and realize your dreams!

The system is in search for beautiful, articulate, young ladies who turn
heads in a crowded room, maybe for her beauty, articulation, style,
dedication to community service, humor, talent, or that indescribable "it"
factor. America's Perfect Teen & Miss is looking for BEAUTY,
COMMUNICATION SKILLS, and GRACE. It is that simple, are you America's
Perfect Teen or America's Perfect Miss?

Due to our National Director's involvement with MTV's Making the Band"
series, we've heard that MTV is considering using this pageant system as
the basis for a reality documentary on pageants. They apparently will
consider following a number of contestants from different states in this
pageant from preparation through the state and national pageant itself!
This is very exciting and would be a great experience for our girls if
it happens. We'll let you know what we find out!

Subject: Wanna marry Ms Pandit?

Author:
By: Mayank Shekhar
[Edit]

Date Posted: 11/ 5/07 12:42:33pm

Stand-up king Chris Rock once insisted: “You know what? Women are the biggest liars in the world. They lie about everything, man — their age, height, skin colour, hair… name it. And you know what’s the biggest lie of ’em all? This is your baby!”

Well, funnyman Rock should’ve added beauty pageants as the “biggest lie of ’em all” of course — a line up of nubiles expected to look ravishing through make-up, makeovers, taught mannerisms, Manorama Yearbooks and Rapidex English speaking courses mugged up in a month.

Saccharine women supposed to drip honey on stage and puke vinegar off it. (Recall Sushmita Sen’s bitchy interview before she won the ’94 Miss India crown that she denied later to keep her title). And what finally wins ramp models ‘n’ wannabe actresses their tiara? ‘Indira Gandhi’, ‘Mahatma Gandhi’, ‘Mother Teresa’, homeless children, AIDS, Polio…. “Well said, she deserves to win,” philosophizes the equally clever judge. Yeah right, and we read Playboy magazine for the articles.

Feminists have fumed over this façade for decades and I think have given up now. The reason to delve into an apparent non-issue is that in a competition clearly about liars, someone got stripped off her Miss India cache for lying to her landlords that she was married, that’s all.

Essentially, it’s pointless to argue how marital status makes any difference to a bikini look, unless the judges are all potential suitors. Because it’s pointless to question regressive rules in a contest that is regressive to begin with. Also, Miss India is a stepping-stone to international pageants.

The rules then are naturally dependant on contests they’re intended for. And the taboo over marriage has existed among women in show business in general (film-goss groupies can list enough actresses who remain secretly married in Bombay cinema, fearing a plummet in their careers). So, obviously the taboo goes beyond pageant rules alone.

However, Laxmi Pandit’s case revealed two relatively unquestioned shocking aspects. One was how there is no cap on the number of times one can repeatedly apply for a pageant, having failed at previous attempts — what’s prompted a phenomenon called ‘veteran contestants’, which Pandit personified (she’s taken rounds of Miss India for about half a decade, placed top five in 2000).

After grooming sessions, sufficient practice, perhaps surgeries and contacts built in the industry (designer Hemant Trivedi, a judge at this year’s Miss India was known to Pandit), such constant participants obviously make the entire race redundant for the rest. To submit that since beauty pageants aren’t to be taken seriously, the issue doesn’t merit serious debate is to ignore several girls, especially from middle class India who spend hard-earned money (average: Rs 5 lakh) at body shops in small towns and cities in pursuit of this dream.

That they’re allowed to make this a profession (keep trying even if you’ve flunked several times), clearly means many otherwise-talented youths lost to a craze, just as this nation has lost many to addictions like IIT-JEE, IAS and CAT. In fact, it is worse, for the alternative vocation in this case (unless you’re a doc like Pandit) is more uncertain.

The second shocker is Pandit herself, who’s legally proven that she is in fact single (hence not broken the concerned rule). However, her affidavit mentions her reason to quit the crown nevertheless as the adverse effect the controversy could have at “India’s chances at Miss World.” In an interview to this paper, she mentions, “There wouldn’t have been a problem at the Miss World contest.”

Quite obviously, the organisers dumped her, as was pre-empted.
What baffles me is why she remained in hiding and never spoke up against being wronged. If she chose to become a ballsy martyr, she could have walked further into nano-seconds public memory with a strong image, besides of course walked into a film producer’s office with a portfolio and a ready script as well (which she still can). Unless, and oh dear no, she wants to enter Miss India yet again! Mid-Day Mumbai - Bombay, India, 07.04.2004

Subject: Beauty Queen Receives Award From President Of The United States

Date Posted: 07/21/07 3:31:50pm

Vida Samadzai, Miss Afghanistan 2003 and Ms. America 2005-06 received the Presidential Service Award on July 10, 2007 during a ceremony in Southern California to honor her for her Crusade in helping the suppressed women in Afghanistan and for her charity work around the world. Vida currently is an actress, model and spokeswomen in India where she can be seen in several movies and commercials worldwide.

The Presidential Gold Medal recipient is the highest honor bestowed upon a civilian by the President of the United States for service to their country and the world. Vida's honor included a gold frame Certificate, Letter of Congratulations from the President of the United States, as well as a Letter of Congratulations from the Presidents Counsel in the White House. Vida said, "I am overwhelmed and please to know that my charity work and Crusade for the Afghan woman has been acknowledged and honored by the President of the United States!"

Ms. Samadzai started her Crusade in 2003 when she bravely entered into the Miss Earth Pageant as Miss Afghanistan defying the Taliban wearing a two-piece red swimsuit with the message, "The Afghan women are beautiful and intelligent. Let the suppressed Afghan women shed their burkas and return Afghanistan back to the way it was before the Taliban took over Afghanistan!"

Vida was born and raised in Afghanistan for 15 years before her family escaped the Taliban and fled to the United States where she now has dual citizenship. Vida says when she was growing up in Afghanistan the women did not wear burkas and her mother was a teacher and her father was a government official.

In April of 2005, Vida Samadzai was crowned Ms. America in Southern California. The pageant was based on Beauty of Face, Interview and Charity Service. Vida impressed the judges with her Crusade for the Afghan women and for all of her charity work around the world. Vida said, "Receiving the title of Ms. America 2005-06 is a great honor and I would like to use this title along with my Miss Afghanistan title to continue my Crusade in America and around the world!"

Vidas grandfather recently passed away and was deeply upset when she could not attend the funeral. A royal man, he was a minister in King Zahir Shah's period. But because of Vida's Crusade and the recent killing of the female journalist. She was advised against her attending the funeral in fear that she would be hunted down and killed by the Taliban.

When is the next pageant? I am 56 and people guess me to be in my 30s. In Las Vegas in 2003 I was mistaken for Ann Margret and surrounded. I was Ky's All American Girl when I was 27, top ten in talent nationally (belly dancing), third runner up nationally and Miss Congeniality. At the same time I was doing my internship in obstetrics and gynecology. I also have many awards for contests in ballroom dancing and do stand up comedy. I am fluent in English, German and Italian and am currently studying Spanish. My two dogs and six cats keep me busy in my retirement from medicine as I attempt to become a writer of novels.

I am a bit perplexed. I have been reading much to-do about the Michigan USA pageant. Sam T'ang who is Michigan's official photographer, (along with many other states official photographer too) has also taken on a manager position with the present Miss Michigan USA. I also read that Mr. T'ang has been teaching Miss Michigan photography to better "title" her "career" ambitions (putting her cosmetolgy on hold for now)making it look better on her bio for nationals.
Mr. T'ang has been involved for years, with the USA pageantry system by photographing girls head shots for their state and national pageant. He has campaigned his pageant photo business very largely, including on message boards that his personal "director" friends run.
I have also read Mr. T'ang promoting Crystal Hayes (Miss Michigan) fund raisers to raise funds for travel and waredrobe, a terrible shame in the middle of such worldly disasters. I am suprised that MUO has not taken a front seat position and slammed Mr. T'ang for his unethical tactics.
In the middle of the Tsunami relief aide, along with many other tragic events, how on earth can Mr. T'ang justify promoting fund raisers for a "beauty contest"?
I have a BIG problem with the bad behavior with both Mr. T'ang and Miss Michigan.
Let the pageants in the world continue, but keep them at a realistic and respectable perspective. Lets keep all of our troops in Iraq and the Tsunami victims as first priority in our monetary donations. I would rather see money spent on the families of the dead and dying over-seas than imported sequins and frills to embellish Miss Michigans gown.
And last, where does a official photographer end his job as official photographer and begin as his subjects manager and promoter and teacher? How can he fairly take pictures of other states delegates while he is personaly involved with Michigans winner?
I would not want someone so biased and partial taking my picture for national.
Does this organization have no ethics? Do they have no rules or regulations? Do they have anyone in charge over there? Does anyone care? Can anyone do whatever they want?
Would really love some answers on this one. I have a copy of this letter (longer version) on its way to MUO. Maybe someone there can answer my questions, if anyone still works there.

Sick, not sexy

I was disgusted to read the article in the Daily Universe concerning Miss Utah. I was appalled that Miss Poole openly admits that she disobeys the BYU Honor Code, yet she still attends BYU. I’m sure Marin is a nice person, but as someone in the spotlight I would hope that she would be a light and an example to those in our faith and throughout the world. It upsets me that in her position she represents not only Utah, but BYU and Mormons in general, yet she has no regard for upholding our dress standards. She claims her decision is personal but if everyone can see, then how personal is it?

As Latter-day Saint women we should be examples to those throughout the world that our bodies are temples and should be treated as sacred. Marin has been blessed with a cute figure and a nice face, but it is too bad that she has not used her gift in a way to further the Lord’s kingdom. As a daughter of God she already wears a crown. Why would she want to give that up in order to win a crown awarded by the world?

Beauty, in every connotation, has been an obsession of women for centuries. Fashion magazines glorify it, the silver screen canonizes it, pageants reward it. Even among the pages of the Bible we read about queens chosen for their aesthetic appeal. Unlike any of these glamorous stereotypes, competing in the Mrs. Wisconsin pageant changed my opinion of beautiful through some humbling and hysterical experiences.
As a Christian, I had entered the pageant under the belief that we are all beautiful. I was excited about the opportunity to let the glory of God shine through me.

"Oh, no . . . no," snickered the pageant director. "No one is born beautiful. You will need to learn the craft of aesthetic pretense if you are serious about winning."

Aesthetic pretense didn't sound very glamorous to me. The advisers, however, went on with great pride to enlighten me about their theory of beauty as a sculpted art as opposed to a natural gift. The more I listened, the wider my eyes became: What had I gotten myself into?

The first project to take on in the arts and crafts of pageantry was my weight. I was already thin and had entered this thing sure that I at least had that part under control.

"Oh, no!" exclaimed my craftician. "You are going to need to slim down."

"A size what? " I exclaimed looking at the measuring tape she held in her hand. I didn't even know they made clothes that small.

Next, she prescribed a "good old-fashioned colon cleansing." (As if people in the good old days actually did this.) That good old-fashioned process, I found, was about as much fun as trudging through a swamp. I had to live, for three days, off nothing more than a tonic made up of molasses, warm water, lemon juice and maple syrup.

"The syrup is for taste," gushed the weight expert. What taste? I'd nibbled on tree bark during a Scout outing; it had more flavor than this concoction. Reluctantly, I chugged it down.

Next, she suggested pampering myself at the local spa with some body wraps. They were supposed to be great for toning. The pampering process involved a total stranger slathering me with lotion whose scent was reminiscent of the goop I had just finished drinking, then being mummified in Saran Wrap. During this whole process I was feeling a lot of things‹none of them pretty.

Walking and standing, two other skills I'd always taken for granted, merited relearning. To falsify a tall and long-legged look, I was encouraged to wear 4-inch stiletto heels. For days I practiced walking with would-be poise and grace up and down the hallways of our home. My children laughed as I teetered about and my husband‹God bless him‹kept yelling, "Are you all right, Honey? I thought I heard you fall." He did, often.

Over the next few weeks, I worked to achieve that coveted "look" of beauty. I had my hair straightened, braided, beaded, twisted, curled and colored; my skin slathered with seaweed, mud, red clay, puree of avocado and Australian tea bags. By the end I looked, well . . . pretty much the same as I did before. The only thing thinner was my wallet. I also had sore feet and a colon crying out for revenge.

As pageant day neared, previous contestants encouraged me to tape and glue for the swimsuit and gown events. I didn't want my clothes to slip out of place as I sauntered out on stage, did I? And as for the duct tape, you don't want to know! Suffice it to say that giving birth was less painful than removing it.

I remember well when pageant day finally arrived. My five suitcases of "essentials" and I settled into the dressing room and watched as 94 other contestants stuck on false eyelashes and fingernails and ace-bandaged their tummies flat. I was quickly whisked away to a makeup artist and her palette of delights. With total disregard for anything natural, she carved and chiseled a work of art on my face, topped only by a team of hairdressers fussing and spraying my locks into a perfect statue.

After the preliminary rounds, they herded us backstage where we waited like prized cattle ready to parade before the judges whatever it was we had become. Two minutes before curtain call the heel of my sky-high shoes caught in the hem of my gown. The bottom of my dress began unraveling. Luckily, I was able to tear off some extra duct tape, which brought sweat to my brow, and made an emergency fix to the dress.

Before this night, I hadn't worn my shoes for longer than my hallway practices. Now, I had been teetering in them for several hours. I couldn't feel my feet at all. I looked down at my shoes, just to make sure my feet were still there, and almost fell into the judges.

When all was said and done, we peeled off the eyelashes, fell off our heels, pried away the makeup and had our clothing surgically removed. There we stood, just as we were before, stripped to the natural loveliness and dignity that God had created. And it was a beautiful sight.

Ironically, I learned what magazines and their airbrush magicians or pageants and their model contestants don't tell you. Something King Solomon knew all along: "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised" (Proverbs 31:30).

Let's use some common sense. I worked with Lorri and was involved in her pageants. She is a fantastic person.

How can you "fire" a volunteer? She ran her prelim pageant and when she decided to quit, she sent an email out to all of us she was working with saying that she didn't want to run the prelim under the state director anymore. It was a forward of the original email she sent the state director. So that is lie #1 the state people are telling.

To try and ban someone for coaching is the most "UNAmerican" thing you can do. That is such an extreme action. Almost kind of looney, seriously. This is AMERICA...girls can have whoever they choose as a coach. Lorri is a fantastic one...ladies.

If you ask her about her experience, again she proves to be a class act, she still says nothing bad. I guess that's why people take to her. She's honest with you as a contestant and doesn't try to suck money out of you like others the state director chooses to link herself too.

The state of Michigan is a mess. It's kind of like everyone around the state director & mayber herself started telling lies and it weaved in to a huge web of lies and now is one great big mess. There are so many untrustworthy people, Sam Tang, Shannon Clark and Rocco are just few. You are the company you choose to keep.

If you don't do anything, expect the same things to continue on. I don't know, write your local editor, for the public section, then send it to Miss Universe. They'll know you're serious. Enough things like that and they might do something. I say we all get a refund and get our money back. Those letters from the attorney say we can.

This is our state pageant, let's fight for it. Or we will all be aged out and nothing will be fair while we still have a chance.

Subject: Women can be beautiful and sexy in many ways

The National Organization of Women (NOW) in the United States is rightly upset about a series of radio contests that are awarding free breast implant surgery to women. Radio stations affiliated with Clear Channel Communications in Tampa, Jacksonville, Detroit, St. Louis, and other cities are sponsoring the competition, called "Breast Christmas Ever."
NOW is urging people to dispatch protest letters or phone calls to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and other authorities to speak out against what it terms is "a degrading and unethical contest."

Our local English newspapers are reporting part of the story of the NOW protest, but are not offering readers enough background information to enable them to appreciate the real ugliness of the situation, a scourge that adds to pressures already far too many for girls and women to stupidly strive for a so called perfect figure. To know how dehumanizing the contests are, you need to do a little homework on the Internet.

If you have rock hard sensibilities and a strong stomach, go to your computer's search engine and tap out the words Breast Christmas Ever.

Let me tell you part of what you will find. To promote the contests, several of the radio invite local plastic surgeons to appear on their programs to explain the alleged advantages of breast enlargement and other forms of cosmetic surgery for women. Some station web sites not only publish contest information, but also names and telephone numbers of doctors who do this type of surgery. The radio stations thus become advertising agents and promoters of breast surgery. Several of the stations also appeal to voyeuristic interests among their listeners by insisting that contest winners pose for before and after operation photos, which (not surprisingly) are also posted on their Web sites. One site I checked offered photographs of last year's winners. Well, "winners" is the term the radio folks used. I think "victims" or "fools" is more accurate nomenclature. Besides concerns about the crude and demeaning nature of these competitions, NOW is also worried about potential health risks for women who undergo breast enhancement surgery. NOW wants to be sure the women are well informed.

Do they realize, for example, that the procedure usually needs costly follow up treatment several years later? NOW points out that the women who win the contests must sign waivers that release the radio stations, doctors, clinics and so on from legal responsibility for problems that may occur with the operations.

Okay, so standards for quality radio appear to have slipped to a record low in the United States, and American society continues to demonstrate its long fixation on sex and new versions of The American Dream. What does dehumanizing hype about breast size and beauty have to do with us here in Taiwan?

Recent news reported the kidnapping of a prominent local plastic surgeon and the payment of a ransom for oodles of cold cash. More recent news tells us police have now arrested suspects. Publicity around the kidnapping spiced up the story by linking the surgeon to services he has allegedly provided for a bevy of formerly small-breasted entertainers. The kidnapping and highlighting of "the doctor for sex appeal" make thoughtful people wonder about all sorts of questions. One of the questions is, Why do many women in our society attach so much importance to their figures? The answer, of course, is that in many ways we pressure women into accepting unrealistic and patently inaccurate models of beauty and sex appeal.

The majority of my students and colleagues are young women, and I am quite sure many of them struggle or fret with questions of self-confidence and physical appearance. It is high time to say out loud to them and other friends that loving our body and appreciating ourselves for who we are signs of good health in all ways.

Reducing a woman's value to the size of her chest, or claiming that her beauty and appeal depend on a single asset, is flat out stupid. Women can be beautiful and sexy in many wonderful ways. Miss Houston to campaign to reduce hunger
Pageant winner knew at young age she wanted to sing

As 23-year-old Betsy Uschkrat looked back on the last weekend in January when she was crowned Miss Houston, she said the experience was like a whirlwind of nonstop activity.

"I am a little overwhelmed right now, trying to keep my equilibrium," she said.

And no wonder. Uschkrat, who was raised in Sugar Land, has had to juggle an array of activities. In addition to the beauty pageant, she handles schoolwork, teaching, performing and applying for graduate school.

She is working on her major in vocal performance at the University of Houston, and she performs regularly in operas and musicals.

The days around the Miss Houston pageant were especially hectic. On Jan. 28, the night before the Miss Houston pageant, Uschkrat played the role of Adele in the opera Die Fledermaus at the Moore's Opera Center. By 7 a.m. the next day, she had to be at Montgomery College in Conroe, where the pageant was being held. Then on Sunday, she performed in the chorus of Die Fledermaus, and on Monday, she had a full day of school, followed by another night performance.

For some this might seem like an overload, but Uschkrat took it in stride.

"When it's booming, it's going good," she said. "I don't really complain about it."

Uschkrat was tired from the experience, but she said it was worth all the effort. The pageant has added excitement to her life.

"I was incredibly excited and kind of thrown back," she said. "I thought, 'This is going to change some things,' but it was thrilling, and it felt good to make an achievement like that."

Uschkrat is no stranger to winning beauty pageants. She was named Miss Woodlands 2001-02 and Miss Southeast Texas 2002-03.

She looks forward to having the chance to talk to people about hunger in Texas.

Most people don't know that Houston ranks second in the nation after Detroit in the number of children that go hungry each year, she said.

"With food being the basic necessity of life, I think it is one of the most important causes to support," Uschkrat said. "We have a devastating problem that is so easy to forget. A lot of people that are hungry don't speak up because they're too busy just surviving."

Uschkrat also said that the people seen on the street begging are just a small portion of the people who go hungry.

Uschkrat has been actively working to reduce hunger in Texas since 1998, when she was a junior at Clements High School in Sugar Land.

That year, she came up with the idea of planning a benefit concert for the East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry. She helped get area schools involved, and a concert drew 1,000 people. The benefit concert since has become a tradition at the ministry.

"It taught me a lot about how good it feels to help other people and that music really does have a power to unite," Uschkrat said.

As a result of that experience, when Uschkrat began entering pageants, she decided to make it her platform to help the hungry. She calls her platform "Heart and Soul: Fighting Hunger in Our Communities."

She said she is looking for support from potential sponsors.

"Any and all help in these endeavors is appreciated because it's not only about supporting me," Uschkrat said. "It's about supporting the community."

Aside from representing Houston over the coming year, Uschkrat will continue to teach singing and to perform whenever she can. She also has plans to pursue a master's degree in either vocal performance or opera.

Uschkrat has been singing since childhood. She said she will never forget an incident that occurred when she was about 4 years old.

She and her family were at the hospital visiting relatives, and she was in a meeting area where there were a lot of toys.

"I stood up on the table in front of everyone and sang 'The Greatest Love of All,' by Whitney Houston because it was my favorite song," Uschkrat said. "So I knew then that I'd be a performer."

Uschkrat performed in school choirs throughout her elementary, middle and high school years. In high school, she made the All-State Choir.

Uschkrat said nothing can compare to that moment when she is singing on stage.

"It's probably the most alive that I could feel in my life," she said. "When I come offstage, I know this is a life moment, something really worthwhile."

She said the moment she won Miss Houston was one of those life moments.

"She is a consummate professional," said Curtis Dumesnil, executive director of Houston Pageants. "She takes every step of the process seriously, and she gives 110 percent."

Her parents, James and Karen Uschkrat, also have been supportive. They said that their daughter's experience with pageants has given her many life skills.

"The pageant has helped her in her grooming, poise, social etiquette and in learning to present herself well in an interview process," James Uschkrat said. "Any time a younger person has to get up in front of older people and present themselves, that's a good skill to have. I wish I'd had that when I was her age."

As for what lies ahead, Uschkrat said she hopes to be the next Miss Texas and the next Miss America.

"Life is a journey," she said. "It takes so many turns that you never expect. I am grateful so many have turned out to be just wonderful experiences."

First, let me say this will be my first AND last post to this messageboard. I have read a sampling of the posts here and it is without a doubt the biggest loony bin I have yet to come across.

I am not Britt Harrison. Britt is a wonderful person with whom I have exchanged numerous emails over the last few years. And I can assure you I do not exchange emails with myself.

Britt is a very hard worker and a completely honest preliminary director. I don't know where this attack on her credibility came into question or even what it's all about, but I know it must be the result of a complete wacko and some very gullible people who will go along with anything any lunatic says.

Britt made it no secret that she ran two messageboards for a time. She invited me to visit, which I did for a brief time, and unlike this asylum, I found it to be very boring but full of people who were quite civil to one another and to the delegates they supported. My point, though, is that Britt ran a respectable board. And unlike me, she certainly does not see the need to post anonymously.

I don't know where this "investigation" began or what sort of beef with preliminary directors led to such a stupid accusation, and frankly, I don't care. I have also been identified as Deidre Sexton of Kansas City, Carolee Munger of Calif., and even Paula Shuggart. Anyone who would presume to say they have "uncovered the facts" about my identity has to be off their rocker.

I do not post on any state messageboards. I don't even read any state messageboards. And I certainly don't run any messageboards! So let this be my final word on the subject because I won't be coming back for any replies, this place is too nutty! However, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who drinks around here! Ciao, honeys!

NEED YOUR HELP! End hunger...

It would be awesome if you girls visited

http://www.danceforsocialchange.com/

If you dance at a dance school, see if they can get involved! It is really simple!

Also, if you had time to add just one or two food banks to the list, that would be amazing. (Go to http://www.danceforsocialchange.com/locator/ and click "Suggest Food Bank" --- it would take you ten minutes to google a local food bank and add it to the list!!!)

Even if you just post in the forum (helps to generate interest!!!) about your experiences with hunger or volunteerism... I would so appreciate it!

I am spokesperson for this wonderful project and we'd like to get involvement on a National level. If you cheerlead, dance, baton twirl, do gymnastics... see if your team or school would consider putting a box for canned food in their venue or collect at a recital, etc. Sign up on the site and register your school/group. It is fun and easy and it's a GREAT CAUSE!!! Hope to see your schools signing up or your forum posts!!!!

This article is so very typical of the mindset of these pageant obsessors. The sad truth of the matter is, people just got wise and started to beat the pageant directors at their own game. Lets state some facts: Pageant directors were the very people that initiated these message boards, to manipulate the readers into believing they were "fans" just promoting their favorite girls. For a while they got away with it, until their secret got out. The smart people who have been shafted time and time again by these snide money mongers took notes and wisened up. They started their own message boards to get the truth out and inform everyone of the misrepresentation and unethical behaviors that too often come with the territory of pageantry. And now we have those very perpetrators calling it "bashing" and "poor sportsmanship". Pretty pathetic. This article sounds like someone is just plain pissed off that they have lost control of what is being said on the many boards that have been started. Tuff. Get over it. No one with any amount of intelligence is going to believe that all these directors are running fair and unbiased pageants. Now that there are message boards that give BOTH sides of a story, they start making excuses and putting the blame on everyone but themselves. I like the fact that people who have been burned are retaliating. It is about time! SUCK IT UP

Boycott The Message Boards

Before message boards, pageant enthusiasts met in chat rooms. The chat rooms were a fun place to go, sometimes on a nightly basis. People joined the conversation from all across Canada and the United States, and even from Panama.

Even though we all had “handles” or made up names, we usually figured out quickly each person's identity. Our 'conversations were more personal and fun. We would discuss recent pageant results, from locals to nationals; make guesses as to who would win; talk trivia and more. Our discussions were open to all view points, so few were not afraid to state their views. We even discussed our families, even if they were not involved in pageants.

Chat room participants ranged from directors, to assistants, to contestants, and even merchants. Others were friends and family of those involved in pageants. It was kept clean and simple and FUN.

It seems all good things come to an end. When “pageant stalkers” arrived on the scene, chat rooms participation declined. The stalkers may or may not have really been involved in pageants but posted messages and attempted to stir up trouble. They called people names and tried to start terrible rumors. In short, 'the regulars' fled the chat rooms because the fun evaporated.

So, next we entered the world of message boards. Some message boards had a little more regulation of content postings if the message was sent through a moderator and checked prior to posting. If not, anyone could post what ever they wanted.

Initially, the message boards were used as they were intended. People discussed pageants, trivia, “what was happening”, etc. The fun had momentarily returned. The message boards provided pageant results quickly, allowed a place to ask for help, exchanging ideas, and discussing in general the wonderful world of pageantry.

The nostalgia was short lived as the hate mongers returned. With these delightful stalkers returned the rumors, the false results, and generally negative attitude. As if this wasn't enough, enter the phenomena of bashing. Bashing seems to be a new pastime, either for disgruntled contestants, family, or friends. Bashers feel they can say anything, about anybody, and it is ok. It seems Thumper's mother's advise regarding only keeping mum if you can't saying something nice has gone into file 19.

Some boards became equivalent to a holocaust bloodbath. Directors were verbally slaughtered. Contestants received lynchings about their figures, clothes, and morals. Rumors and half truths would be posted and spouted as gospel, even about individuals not directly involved in pageantry. Others would chime in with their 2 cents, even if they had no first had testimony but rather wanted to join in the mobocracy.

Why do we need such ugliness? Why do we let it continue? Why do people feel they have to be so vicious and try to tear down people who are competing, giving their all? Teens and young adults who have fragile psyches, are not spared the brutality. These poison-tongued linguists need to take a maturity pill and realize that neither they nor those they support can always win.

I'd like to believe some of these serpents are hackers who visit a message board, read a bit of the content and then unload their atrocious commentary to be a royal pain. However, which the frequency of ill will, I'm inclined to believe this is not a large scale outside job. Perhaps it is time to boycott our participation with message boards until the return of decency.

Subject: Former Miss America lobbys for prostate cancer research

Knight Ridder News

Miss America? Prostate cancer?

Heather French Henry, Miss America 2000, figures any time you have the nation's most famous beauty pageant mentioned in the same sentence as a man's reproductive system, "it's bound to raise eyebrows.''

So she's using her fame to help promote understanding of the disease and lobby for expanded funding.

Recently, Henry, the wife of former Kentucky Lt. Gov. Steve Henry, spoke to a U.S. House of Representatives committee on appropriations as part of a lobbying effort to increase Department of Defense spending on prostate research from $85 million to $100 million.

She and her husband, a prostate cancer survivor, regularly speak to groups around the country on prostate cancer. She wants to make prostate cancer as well understood as breast cancer.

According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, prostate cancer symptoms include:

A need to urinate frequently, especially at night.

Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine.

Weak or interrupted flow of urine.

Painful or burning urination.

Difficulty in having an erection.

Painful ejaculation.

Blood in urine or semen.

Often, early stages of prostate cancer do not cause symptoms, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. You should speak with your doctor immediately if you have experienced any of the above symptoms or if you are a man older than 50 who has not had a recent prostate-cancer screening.

Many books and scientific studies have been written on the potential and the influence of the Internet. Often the role of the Net is understood as being a means of offering billions of pages from which we can glean information. Information that we can use later in the real world.
The reality, however, is somewhat different. For example, message boards on the Net have morphed into human interfaces. The users do not merely look for information from them, but also build something, a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts - human opinions and knowledge. They network into a virtual community.

One manifestation of the power of this interfacing is the so-called "flash mob" phenomenon. In the flash mob world, people decide upon common actions or operations at a predetermined moment.
This could, for instance, be a situation where a group is rounded up on the Net and they all arrive at the steps of Parliament at a pre-arranged time, drop their pants and moon the MPs, and then disperse again.

Using the same basic principles, virtual super-calculators are being developed. Many will have heard of one of these, the SETI@home project, which is part of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence "out there".
In the SETI experiment, thousands of home PCs utilise their down-time - when the screensaver would be on - chewing on small slices of datafiles that have been collected from the monitoring of radio waves from outer space. In this way an entity is put together that can number-crunch even more effectively than the supercomputers.

The power of networking was also seen when the victims, the missing, and the found from the Indian Ocean tsunami were promptly listed on the Net. No official organisation could match the efficiency of the ad hoc groups armed with a notepad and a modem.*

More rough-cast examples of the strength of the networks can be had from the field of consumer protection.
A car repair shop accidentally let one of its clients see that the note "Customer is a dickhead" had been flagged next to his name and details in the firm's customer database. When the customer in question commented on this on an Internet newsgroup, the other members of the group became aroused, and the name of the repair shop became synonymous with poor service.
Right now, users of one popular message board are continuing the debate prompted by a weekly investigative journalism programme [MOT] shown on the Finnish Broadcasting Company's TV1. The programme was about the problems of used cars brought from Germany - a popular issue these days, as the tax breaks make it quite attractive.
A dealer who sold such an imported car in Finland and kept quiet about its [many] faults has already been outed and branded.
More than 160,000 views have been recorded of the discussion thread that pointed out the dealers in question were a bunch of swindlers. This is bound to have an impact on future sales.

The power of the Net differs in certain respects from the power of the more traditional media. In the online world, anyone can present their experiences - real or unreal - of "a bunch of swindlers".
The credibility of the writer depends largely on his or her ability to put fingers fluently to keyboard. There is no golden rule that urges writers to veracity as exists in the world of journalism.
On the net, the kid gloves come off. Companies offering poor service or shoddy goods are bluntly named and shamed, and the adjectives are colourful, to say the least.

Message boards and newsgroups differ from traditional media channels in another way, in that newspapers and electronic media can be called to account and ordered to publish corrections or provide space for responses.
But how do you intervene over the fact that the wired community kicks, punches, and brands on a daily basis?
A newspaper goes into the recycling bins to be pulped, and a news bulletin is largely forgotten in a couple of minutes. But on the Net the discussion goes on and on, if the theme is sufficiently interesting.
On open-access message boards, ones that do not require registration before posts can be added, a few activists can keep the debate nicely wound up and build a national movement, even using an array of pseudonyms.

The individual, too, can feel the hammer-blows of the merciless Net community.
Consider the recent example of the beauty pageant contestant who was exposed for having posed for racy pictures.
Precious few people had actually seen the images in the small-circulation men's nudie mag. However, after the scandal broke, links to hastily-assembled sites carrying the pictures appeared almost immediately in posts on the Internet message boards.
For instance, on the popular Suomi24.fi discussion portal the doings and attributes of the Miss Finland candidate have been goggled at by upwards of 200,000 users.
Provincial newspapers would be proud to boast of such circulation figures.

At its best, the Net uses the discussion groups to organise the Netizen community on its own terms. At their most trivial, message boards simply rehash familiar topics, and at their worst they are strewn with slander and abuse written by the pathologically illiterate.
For the sake of the freedom that is at the heart of the Internet phenomenon, we cannot pick and choose one of these manifestations.

Make sure you get a qualified trainer. Remember you want a shaply body with nice long and lean muscles. You do not want the body of a body builder. This is a beauty contest not a strong lady contest. Do not bulk up. Long and graceful is the key here. Read below to get a good idea of what you need to do.

The swimsuit competition in a beauty pageant can, for some, be the most dreaded part of the competition. Part of this anxiety can steam from lack of confidence or from lack of preparation. This article will focus on fitness preparation for the swimsuit competition.

In my first pageant competition, I learned quickly the power of fitness. I thought that since I was thin, I would score fairly well in the swimsuit competition. I soon learned that thin does not mean fit. I decided to begin a fitness routine to prepare me for next year's pageant. It is important to note that I started this preparation one year in advance. A well-toned body is not created overnight! I began extensive fitness preparation six months before the competition. My personal routine now consists of a 45 minute water aerobics class five times a week. (You can replace this with land aerobics.) On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I also attend a water toning class. On Mondays, I exercise my upper body, and on Wednesdays, my lower body. On Fridays, I do 45 more minutes of cardio (elliptical trainer, bicycle, stairmaster or treadmill). Three times a week, I also work my abdominals by doing 3 sets of 35 crunches. This fitness routine may not work for you. It is important to find the routine that best suits you and your fitness needs. I recommend speaking with a professional to assess your physical needs. It is always important to speak with your doctor or health care professional before starting any kind of fitness routine.

In the beginning, you may decide to speak with a fitness coach and/or personal trainer. I researched several coaches and was coached by Miss Teen USA 1995 Keylee Sue Sanders. Keylee has a wonderful fitness tape. She demonstrates various exercises and levels so that you can get the maximum benefit you need. Keylee is now coaching with designer, Holly Hardwick and judge, Tiffany Munn. You can receive information on their services by calling 1-800-684-1107.

Another avenue for local training is to join a health club. I suggest joining a club that offers on-site personal trainers included in their membership. I personally enjoy training at Mademoiselle Fitness Centers. Mademoiselle is an all-female health club with equipment designed specifically for women. They have on-site personal trainers available everyday during regular business hours. The advantages to joining a health club are that if you are paying money monthly, it is likely that you will go, and it allows flexibility around your schedule. I strongly recommend your checking on the availability of a fitness center such as this near your home.

Lastly, remember that a good diet and drinking water also contribute to good health and fitness.

Taking steps toward fitness preparation may turn your swimsuit competition into a most-anticipated event.

It's in the cards. Michigan / Ohio are cursed. Repayment for all of the sneaky & dirty deeds the director & crew have done. It will not be lifted, until the wrong has been made right.

Read them for yourself

Subject: Is Shannon G. Clark her real name or stage name? I thought I saw her at a drag queen contest in Illinois two months ago.

I am proud to announce the launch of PageantCast--a new internet radio program for and about beauty pageants. The best place to check it out is on Podcast Pickle at http://www.podcastpickle.com/casts/?10128.

As you know, my local radio show has interviewed many local and national beauty pageant titleholders. The show will feature a lot of our past interviews until we are able to get new interviews put together for this program. If directors have items they would like to make announcements on the program, we'd offer this forum as well. To acknowledge these requests, please send e-mail to pageantcast@yahoo.com and we can discuss. Pageant titleholders can also request to be interviewed at this e-mail address.

We hope there might be interest by people to volunteer toward this podcast as well.

I hope you find the program interesting and fun.
