I have a son with some learning problems too. I suspect Dyslexia and so has his Dr. Anyway until he is tested for it I am trying different methods of teaching him in reading writing and math. I have read some helpful material as well as figured out on my own some ways to help him.
Your question leaves me wandering, does he quess the word correctly or not? I find that what helps my son is to stop him momentarily so he can spell the word, not sound it out,and for some reason he gets halp way through the word and quesses it correctly. Some are big words too! I believe this works becouse it slows him down to look and not skip over it. The difficulty at first was getting him to slow down and spell the word becouse once he gets going he doesn't want to stop, I think becouse he does'nt want to loose his place. But I found that spelling a word he read repeatedly in a book but did'nt grasp, even though I told him what is was, helped him the next time the word showed again. I would also tell him, "Look at that word, that's the word,I'll say busy, and he read it correctly after that. Of course every Dyslexic might benifit differently but it was a start for him.
What might help might be to take a piece of paper and write the same word down and have him spell it so all other words are out of the way. I find the more familier he becomes with each new word and it's meaning, The better he remembers it next time.
I think it's important to not give up trying something that works. I come from a line of Dyslexics who have developed a love for reading.
