The first and by far the MOST important thing for you to do is ADMIT you do not have a full understanding of Dyslexia. Now, this may sound like a negative statement but please listen. As a parent of a dyslexia child what has been the most harmful to my child are educators that do not understand dyslexia nor how to teach a dyslexic child but do it anyway. You HAVE to be specially trained by professsioanls to know how the brain of a dyslexic works long before you can sit with that child and think for a second you are doing any good. What is amazing is how quickly you as an educator will pick up on teaching styles, it simply requires you committing to taking the time. Thinking outside the box is key and from my experience, educators for the most part are rather weak in this area. There are thousands of dyslexic children that will benefit from a wonderful educaton; you have the power to be one of those people. Good luck.
