 Hi there, I am in the process of completing a doctoral piece of research with classroom assistants who work with children very much like the person you described. We found that one of the things that can have the biggest impact was simply becoming more attuned to the child and developing a bond with the child; Getting to know them, finding time with them one to one, doing fun activities together etc. If you are looking for reading to help, look for research on attachment and attunement; much of this is focused on parenting but you are acting in a similar role for the child in school.
