Hi, I have previously worked in secondary schools as a special needs tutor for 9 years and am currently working across the primary sector as a Specialist Literacy teaching assistant working with a range of pupils who are displayig Dyslexic tendencies.
One suggestion to your concerns could be to relate a picture outline or shape clue answer to each question (word and visual association preferably linked to the question )and write the questions and answers onto precut coloured cards. Also try placing some items onto a tray and cover with a teatowel, reveal all items for 30 seconds re-cover and ask your son to remember the items for help with short term memory.
