Having had conversations with my mother more recently, she is now 87 I have gained some insight into why I was dressed and treated as I was.

My treatment was decided almost from the day I was born. Not that I can remember but until I went to school I always dressed in little girls clothing. But I guess at three and four years old you do not really care. Up to the age of 11 at school shorts were not an issue as all boys wore them. However when I got home in my junior years I was always put in a little wrap around skirt. It was only when I got older that I was sometimes allowed to wear various short trouser outfits, mainly shortalls. All my outfits were designed to make me look and feel much younger than I actually was. My mother always believed that boys try to be older than their years and that it was an effective way to remind them that they are still little boys for a long time. She also belived that I looked very good in my outfits. She thought I looked very smart indeed in my gymslips as well. I remember that my aunt was even more keen than my mother on making sure I was dressed appropriatly. I never wore even my shortalls when I stayed with her. It was always my kilts, sailor suit, gymslips or a couple of plain pinafore style dresses.

My mother made sure that I had a healthy diet and did plenty of exercse to ensure that I looked smart in my outfits. When I did my exercise at home I used to wear a leotard with a crushed blue velvet top.
