| 06:22:34 07/21/07 Sat | Simon Rodwell | Battery replacement on Ensoniq VFX. | I have an Ensoniq VFX with a solder tagged flat lithium coin cell battery hard wired into the board. I know that Route 66 would sell me a battery kit with instructions but I live in england and i guess the import taxes would be high for what it is. I think I can replace with a standard CR2032 3 volt battery. Can anyone walk me through the steps to do this. I don't know how to take the keyboard out of the instrument and I think you have to do this to get the main pcb board out and desolder the battery from underneath Any advice very gratefully received - or if there is an old service bulletin on this very useful. Don't want to go into this without knowing all the steps as the keyboard is of enormous sentimental value to me. Happy for you to email me at smrodwell@aol.com if you can help Thanks a lot Simon UK | 1 | [Reply] |

| 20:39:11 02/13/07 Tue | Wolf | KT76 dismantling information?? And Mirage help? | I just picked up a very nice condition (for its age) KT-76 and after even just a weekend of playing with it, I love it. However, there is something loose inside - everything works, all my keys play properly with correct velocity and aftertouch pressure, sounds all work, MIDI is good...but when I pick it up I can hear something rattling across the bottom of the case from one end to the other. I'd really like to open it up and check that out in case its a screw that could short out on something, but I cannot find ANY online resources for teardown/disassembly on this thing. I'm not getting the battery low warning yet, but I'd like to know how to get into the box so when it DOES need replacement I can do it. And on my old Mirage, the Shugart floppy mechanism has finally failed completely. Its the old metal-case Mirage with the floppy slot in the front edge, not the newer style. Since I got the KT76 fixing the Mirage isn't a high priority but if there's a replacement floppy mechanism to be had I'd like to try to ressurect the beast. | 1 | [Reply] |
| 20:24:47 02/09/07 Fri | Jared | Ensoniq SQ-R, SQ-R Plus | I own an SQ-R and a SQ-R Plus. I have limited knowledge on how to use these. I plugged a MIDI keyboard into the SQ-R and went through a lot of the features of the System button. I then went through several of the sounds, so basic functionality was good and everything seemed fine. I had a manual to accompany me. I then did the same with the SQ-R Plus. The SQ-R Plus doesn't seem to be working properly; some of the buttons don't seem to respond via the display screen. But the problem is figuring out whether it really doesn't work or I just don't understand the buttons well enough yet. First, the System button doesn't cycle through the paired parameters like the regular SQ. If I turn it on now, I hit the system button, and I get Track 1 ON Transpose=+4 +00 I hit the up and down arrow keys, and the +4 cycles through the numbers and lands on -4. Now I hit all the possible area keys but the -4 just stays there flashing. I hit the system button again, and I can't get off this screen. Now, I hit any button, and this screen won't change. The system button physically actually seems to stick a bit. So I turn off the SQ-R Plus and turn it on. If I hit the sound button, I can go through the sounds using the <-- and --> keys, but i have to double click them or hold the button-they dont' really respond that quickly. Plus, there's only 8 sounds, 1-7 and sound 99, wind chimes. So, anybody out there familiar with these can tell me if it sounds like the SQ-R Plus has something wrong with it? Also, both of these say the batteries low, but i thought the battery was just needed to store sounds and parameters. The SQ-R seems to operate fine; but is it possible the SQ-R Plus doesn't function properly unless it has a good battery in it? Besides this question of whether the SQ-R Plus is broken, could anybody email me how to install a battery in one of these? I bought one battery for one of these off ebay. Lastly, I only have the SQ-R manual; could anybody email or fax a SQ-R Plus manual? I was planning to sell the SQ-R and keep the SQ-R Plus, but if the SQ-R Plus does indeed need repair, then I'm going to keep both of them. I'm currently in the process of moving and plan to learn to use these after I've moved; if I had more time, I could play with the SQ-R Plus more-but having tried what I did it seems that there is something wrong with it. Hopefully someone out there can help. Thanks. My email's ftngrave@hotmail.com | 1 | [Reply] |

This cycle goes on a couple of times until the KT boots with a blank screen. I then have to turn the power off and on 5-6 times to get it to boot properly. Then the same thing happens again. I have noticed that when I try to use the KT in a cool environment (my garage ) it takes longer to get the error message. In the house where it is warmer I get the error message after a few seconds. Other than this problem the KT works fine....Help???? Thanks for any advice!!!! | 1 | [Reply] |

The problem has been intermittant for a while now and in the past I have been able to get it going by turning it off then on again a few times , then it would boot up OK, but now it doesn`t want to go at all , just a dull glow on the LCD screen after switching it on. Can anyone help here !! also would anyone know how I can get hold of a circuit diagram for the KT76 , I have a tech that can have a look at it but he needs the schematics. Has anyone experienced a similar prob with there KT76 or 88 ? Cheers all! | 4 | [Reply] |

The factory battery lasted close to ten years. I believe I've replaced the original with the same or similar batteries, although I can no longer recall the specs of the original. I've considered that the replacements might have been old, but I think that is doubtful since they were purchased from Radio Shack and I doubt their stock is so old that I'd only get a few months out of them, as opposed to a few years. I've got an SQ1 Plus and recently replaced the battery and I really had to go the long way around to do it because the metal connectors from the board to the battery broke off. So I got some insulated wire and soldered them into the board(not to difficult, just melted a drop of solder on the board then held the wire in place with some needle nose pliers). Then I used some electrical tape to connect them to the Energizer 2032 lithium battery I bought at Target. They come two to a pack, oh well. After going through all this the wires still came loose, so I popped the bottom off again and just put a paper clip over the electrical tape and its been fine ever since but its only been a couple months though. If I hit "No" then everything else works, just not the keyboard. I can load files from disk and play the sequencer - all the audio circuitry on the main board seems to be working. Any hints? I seem to recall reading about problems with ribbon cable connections going bad due to oxidization, but replugging the cable seemed to do nothing. I searched through my Transoniq Hacker issues, but could not find any articles on this. Perhaps I read about the ribbon cable problems on the ENSONIQ mailing list out of Reed College, but I'll have to search to find that! If anyone has information, it might be good to post it here. It seems that some others have been bitten by this problem with old gear. | 2 | [Reply] |
| 18:59:40 02/18/05 Fri | Fuzzymks | · Re: EPS Keyboard Failed - everything else working | Under the keyboard proper, there are 3 circuit boards that control the poly- key (tm) pressure. One on them is readily viewable and has a ribbon cable that connects it to the mainboard, but the other two are underneath the keys themselves. There is a connector that connects board 2 to board 3. It is not a ribbon cable, but about 15 pins that bridge the two circuit boards. Over time and use, the keyboard begins to sag a little bit and this connector eventually starts to corrode (get dirty), come loose and the like. THERE'S THE PROBLEM! Fixing it however can be as easy as wiggling that connector to remove any corrosion, or a more permanent solution is to unsolder the connector and hard solder the pins from one board to another. Ensoniq used to do this as a part of a warrenty repair, but I'm afraid you'll be left doing it yourself now. Everett Simpson fuzzymks@mindless.com | 1 | [Reply] |

But I've seen all kinds of keyboards, sequencers, and samplers coming and going since then and it amazes me how much this 80s keyboard can do. I'm convinced that all the sounds ARE THE SAME coming out today - they just hype the buyer with effects added and memory upgrades. But a sine wave is a sine wave is a sine wave...etc. While I have purchased other sound modules since then, I still use this as my main workstation before I fly over to digital hardrive for live instruments. So it is nice to know there is a place like this for other Ensoniq users. | 13:24:48 02/26/04 Thu | JiPtRiP tHe UltRAHiP | SQ-80: programming/assigning CC#'s | hi, Nice to see Transoniq back online! I would like to expand the midi controller capabiltities of my SQ-80. It only transmits and recognizes 9 CC#'s and i can just use the mod wheel, pitch bend wheel, data entry slider and 2 data buttons to control softsynths. The midi implementation chart in the manual states that the control changes are programmable. They also mentioned somewhere else in the manual that, even though only 9 CC#'s were agreed upon, other controller numbers (1-95) were included, to accomodate future midi standards. So do you think i could assign CC#'s to controls on the SQ-80 myself? If so, how would i do that? Here's some info i found on the midi.org site, maybe it helps: "- RPN / NRPN Controller number 6 (Data Entry), in conjunction with Controller numbers 96 (Data Increment), 97 (Data Decrement), 98 (Registered Parameter Number LSB), 99 (Registered Parameter Number MSB), 100 (Non-Registered Parameter Number LSB), and 101 (Non-Registered Parameter Number MSB), extend the number of controllers available via MIDI. Parameter data is transferred by first selecting the parameter number to be edited using controllers 98 and 99 or 100 and 101, and then adjusting the data value for that parameter using controller number 6, 96, or 97. RPN and NRPN are typically used to send parameter data to a synthesizer in order to edit sound patches or other data. Registered parameters are those which have been assigned some particular function by the MIDI Manufacturers Association (MMA) and the Japan MIDI Standards Committee (JMSC). For example, there are Registered Parameter numbers assigned to control pitch bend sensitivity and master tuning for a synthesizer. Non-Registered parameters have not been assigned specific functions, and may be used for different functions by different manufacturers. Here again, Roland and Yamaha, among others, have adopted their own practices to assure some standardization." The SQ-80 has the controller numbers mentioned above, except for numbers 100 and 101. | 2 | [Reply] |
| 13:24:48 02/26/04 Thu | JiPtrIP etc. | · Re: SQ-80: programming/assigning CC#'s | I have asked Ensoniq-wizzard Rainer Buchty about the issue and here is what he said: Q: As you probably know the SQ-80 only receives and transmits 9 CC#'s. Since then a lot more CC#'s have been standardized. Do you think it would be easy to program them into the SQ-80's OS (like you did with the other customization options)? A: Oh, already back then a lot more CC#s were standardized. Ensoniq in their eternal wisdom just decided to support only a small set. From the viewpoint of the SQ80 OS there are only 12 different controllers (no matter if they're transmitted as CC or an own command): pitch bend, sustain, mod wheel, foot ctrl, xctrl, pressure, volume, data entry, data in/dec, and parameter LSB/MSB. Only a subset, the first 8, are used for sound computation. Q: What are your thoughts on this subjects? A: It would require a major rewrite of the affected routines. The whole track/voice management relies on the internal controller numbering. Besides, the ROM space is so tight, it's more than questionable that any changes would fit. There are only like 120 bytes of free space scattered among 64kB of OS ROM. | 1 | [Reply] |
