Subject: Torpedo fire control question

Hello,
Great web site. Learning lots, here.

I've got a question about Balao (and Gato?) class subs. In movies ("Run Silent Run Deep," for example), when the captain gives the order to fire a torpedo, there's always someone in the control room who throws switches on a panel and pushes "the button".

But then moments later we see, in the torpeo room, men pulling what looks to be the launch lever, some valve that I suspect actually launches the torpedo from the tube.

What's the purpose of the switches and "the button" in the control room, if in fact the torpedo room crew is actually launching the torpedo?

I realize that my exposure to the diesel subs is largely from Hollywood's depiction of them, but I've seen this in virtually every sub movie, so I'm guessing there's *some* fact behing it. Not that one should believe everything you see in such a film, but...

What's the purpose of the controls in the control room if some guy in the torpedo room is doing the firing?

Thanks,
Dave C
