MISS WORLD 2005 - THE TALENT SHOW -- JBorges, 11:23:45 11/20/05 Sun [1]
The first five awards of Miss World 2005 were presented tonight, to category winners at the Miss World Talent Show. An audience of nearly 3,000 packed into the Rui’an stadium to witness the night of their lives as the Miss World contestants sang, danced and performed their way into the hearts of the people of Rui’an.
The Miss World Talent Show is always a highlight of the pageant, and tonight’s show was no exception. Traditional dances, incredible voices and stunning costumes filled the stage as more than 65 contestants performed for the appreciative audience.
Songstress American Virgin Islands wowed with a rousing rendition of ‘I Will Always Love You’ and received a standing ovation from her fellow contestants to win the title in Best Singing Act, while national skating champion Italy wowed the crowds – and came away with the medal for Best Original Performance with a breathtaking roller skating display to Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma.
Canada belly-danced her way to the top place in the traditional dance category, while Japan silenced the arena with her faultless violin recital to win Best Musical Act. The category of Best Dance Performance was hotly contested but Czech Republic scooped the title with her modern ballet to When You Believe from hit move The Prince of Egypt.
The overall winner chosen from the five category winners tonight – and recipient of a place in the final 15 – will be announced at the grand final in Sanya on 10th December.
Each girl in the three hour show did her nation proud as she tried her hardest to win her category and ultimately the first of three Fast Track places through to the final 15 in Miss World 2005. Throughout the evening, the other contestants provided much-needed support with applause and praise from their stage-side seats.
This year’s contestants have shown an especially high standard of talent, with a broad range of skills and talent. Representatives from the Asian countries did their continent proud with colourful displays of traditional costumes and dance, including Nepal and Vietnam, who also made a brief speech praising all the girls for the abilities and courage. Elsewhere in the evening, Vietnam silenced the audience with a beautiful dance performance mimicking a peacock, while Lebanon drew applause for her belly dancing. As we are in Asia, martial arts acts were to be expected but one striking display came from an unexpected source: Costa Rica. Her karate performance complemented the taekwondo display of Korea, who ended with a wood-splitting kick – and they were placed second and joint third respectively in the Best Original Act category.
In the final moments of the show, judge and Miss World 2004 Maria Julia stunned the crowd and contestants with an impromptu rendition of Peruvian song Criolla – something she has wanted to do since being in China. “I know that I am not a good singer but I was very proud to sing a song from my country,’ said Maju. But it was left to American Virgin Islands to close the show with a repeat performance of her winning song, with all fellow contestants clapping on stage behind her.
Judging tonight’s performances were Wenzhou’s Mayor Xu, Mr Chen Bu-Lin, head of the Wenzhou tourism bureau, Mr Zhou Yong-Liang, president of the Meilun Medical Group, Miss World Organisation Chairman Julia Morley, Miss World 2004 Maria Julia, beauty and fashion consultant Gillian Lentin and Emmy-winner writer Malcolm Williams.
Mrs Julia Morley thanked the local government of Wenzhou and Rui’An for their support during the Miss World 2005 visit to Wenzhou, and praised them for the welcome the girls have received during their four day trip. “A lot of you have daughters of a similar age or you are students yourself,’ she said. “The greatest thing is that all these young people are very nervous about performing. They are not professionals but they are performing for you in Rui’an with a good heart. They want to do their best for you all. From across the world we are performing for you as a big World family to recognise Rui’an as our home”
After the Talent Show a dinner reception was held at the Rui’an Sunshine Holiday Hotel. The contestants enjoyed the chance to congratulate each other on their performances over a banquet supper which included crab, prawns and beef, before facing the hour’s drive home to their hotel in the hills above Wenzhou.

MISS WORLD 2005: FEARLESS FORECAST
Experts say Philippines will win
Since 2002, the Miss World pageant has become more predictable when it comes to who will win the crown. It is somewhat ironic because this is the only beauty pageant by far which exceeded the 100-delagate mark, the pageant which holds the record for the most number of contestants. How will you predict a winner when there are so many beautiful ladies to choose from? But this question is somehow irrelevant because in 2002, pageant experts predicted that Azra Akin of Turkey will take home the crown and she did! In 2003, they rooted for Rosanna Davidson of Ireland and she did win. In 2004, Peru's Julia Mantilla Garcia was everyone's favorite to win the crown and like her two successors, she also did!
This year, even before Miss World 2005 officially starts, pageant fans, media, experts and even bidding houses are betting on Carlene Aguilar of the Philippines to win the prestigious crown. Well, Carlene is no stunner but Miss World isn't the kind of pageant that chooses caucasian barbie doll type of woman. Miss World chooses the kind of woman that will best represent the world and its cause of "beauty with a purpose." There is something about Carlene that the experts sees. Aside from her experience and her Chinese blood (which is a factor since Miss World is going to be held in Sanya, China), there is something in her that is difficult to describe. Or is it what they call the "it" factor? Maybe. Is it the massive support of the Filipinos around the world? This is another advantage since the audience will vote for the semi-finalists, 2 from each 6 regions. But if there is a criteria of who will best represent the world, there is no doubt that a Filipino should win because Filipinos are flexible people and they can easily adapt to any culture. Name a country and there is a number of Filipinos working there even the smallest of island state or the farthest ends of the world.
It's about time that the Philippines win this elusive crown because the purpose of this pageant is well fitted for a Filipino. In the 55 years of the pageant, the closest Philippines have ever reached the top spot was in 1973 when Evangeline Pascual was announced 1st runner-up. In the past 3 years, Philippines has consistently placed in the finals. This year might be THE year.
But of course, Carlene will face tough challenges from Spain, Italy, Costa Rica, Namibia and Canada.

MISS WORLD 2005 UPDATED ASSESSMENT 11/17 -- GLOBALBEAUTIES.COM, 18:59:16 11/16/05 Wed [1]
From GLOBALBEAUTIES.COM (updated 11/17)
WORLD BEAUTY BET - 11/17
Passed the "Photoshop effect", in the last few days our judges had the chance to see the Miss World contestants in the first published casual photos in China, and many have changed their minds, which resulted in new lists of favorites. Let's see who they believe are the hottest possibilities in each region:
ASIA PACIFIC:
WINNER: PHILIPPINES
2nd Choice: CHINA
Close shots: India, Sri Lanka, Australia
Dark horses: Japan, Singapore
Miss Philippines remains the hottest bet in Asia Pacific and the world, 'the one to beat', in the opinion of most pageant observers and betting houses. In Asia she is followed by the home-town girl, Miss P.R. of China. Miss India is at the region's door step for a spot, followed by beautiful Miss Sri Lanka, who has been gaining popularity by the minute with her stunning face and radiant smile.
- * -
NORTHERN EUROPE :
WINNER: ICELAND

2nd Choice: RUSSIA
Close shots: England, Norway, Switzerland
Dark horses: Ireland, Poland
The more people see of Miss Iceland, the more they like her. A refreshing beauty with a naive sensuality, she is among this year's strongest contenders. Miss Russia is now 2nd in this very competitive region, closely followed by Miss England, an exotic beauty who has everything to shine in this year's pageant.
- * -
SOUTHERN EUROPE :
WINNER: ITALY

2nd Choice: SPAIN
Close shots: Albania, Slovakia, Bulgaria
Dark horses: Slovenia, Lebanon
Italy still reigns in Southern Europe in the opinion of those covering the pageant. It is strongly believed that she could become her country's first Miss World and grand slam winner. Miss Spain though, has lived up to her admirers expectations, and is pretty much alive in the contest. Slovakia, Bulgaria and Slovenia have all been gaining ground, and are ready to pull a surprise.
- * -
AFRICA:
WINNER: NAMIBIA

2nd Choice: SOUTH AFRICA
Close shots: Nigeria, Ethiopia, Botswana
Dark horses: Zambia, Angola
Namibia still 'reigns supreme' in the African continent, where South Africa is the second choice to advance to the semi-finals. Miss Nigeria has been getting some positive reviews and is now considered another strong possibility in her region.
- * -
CARIBBEAN:
WINNER: PUERTO RICO
2nd Choice: MARTINIQUE
Close shots: Dominican Republic, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica
Dark horses: St. Lucia, Barbados
The Caribbean has 4 very strong candidates, all very popular among our experts. Leading the bunch is Miss Puerto Rico, who actually gained even more fans after her first pictures were released. Amazingly gorgeous, she is one of the favorites for the crown. Ready to ruin her chances are striking Martinique, sweet Dominican Republic and sexy Trinidad & Tobago.
- * -
AMERICAS:
WINNER: COSTA RICA

2nd Choice: BRAZIL
Close shots: Venezuela, Canada, Mexico
Dark horses: Peru, Bolivia
In the Americas many have been the changes after the delegates' arrival in China. Costa Rica now leads the bets in the "New World", followed by a South American beauty whose natural beauty and great body are impressing the Chinese and the world: Miss Brazil. Miss Venezuela is also very strong, now in 3rd place. The two countries which were on the top of the list last week, Canada and Mexico, are now 4th and 5th, respectively. If logic applies, these 5 countries will be disputing the Americas' two spots in the semifinals. Peru and Bolivia come next far behind, and most other delegates haven't even been mentioned.
- * -
WHO WILL BE MISS WORLD 2005?
Among our experts' 6 continental choices, their current choice for the crown is Miss PHILIPPINES. Miss ITALY is 2nd and Misses ICELAND and PUERTO RICO are tied in 3rd place.

MISS WORLD 2005 - PHILIPPINES -- LOTLOT, 20:50:10 11/15/05 Tue [1]

NOVEMBER 15, 2005
The Government of Sanya organized a grand welcoming dinner for the 104 contestants of the 55th Miss World pageant last Sunday evening.
The magnificent event took place at the Yalong Bay Mangrove Tree Resort, where special guests and the press could witness -once again- the beauty of these accomplished women.
Miss World's President Julia Morley once again thanked the authorities of Sanya for their support in organizing the contest, and officially welcomed the contestants for a once in a lifetime experience.
The most applauded delegates of the night were China PR (Ting Ting Zhuo) and PHILIPPINES (Carlene Aguilar) who dazzled the photographers by modeling a very peculiar outfit.
All delegates were introduced on stage before having dinner. Then, they were invited to join dancers on stage for bamboo dancing -an art that requires amazing reflex-.
The evening ended with a spectacular display of fireworks.

The lovely MISS BAHAMAS WORLD!!! -- fan, 09:43:45 10/31/05 Mon [1]

Dancer/Model Chosen as Miss Bahamas World; Bahamian Public Called On to Vote Her Into Miss World Finals.
On the day that she was born they called her Ordain, which means “The chosen one.” One the eve of her 18th birthday – as if fulfilling prophecy - Ordain Moss was chosen to represent The Bahamas in the forthcoming Miss World pageant. The newly crowned Miss Bahamas World beat seven other contestants for the title during a private screening held last month. She is now vigorously preparing to compete in the world’s largest beauty contest, which is set for Sanya, China on December 10th. “I was overwhelmed, after winning the Miss Bahamas World title,” she says. “By doing so, I became the fourth national beauty queen in my family, and I couldn’t be prouder to continue that trend.”
Ordain was bestowed the title of Miss Bahamas World by the Miss Bahamas Organization, owners of the Miss World franchise for the territory of The Bahamas. The organization selected the queen in a private screening, in which contestants were interviewed by a panel of judges, and modeled in swimwear. “I am grateful to the Miss Bahamas Organization for giving me this opportunity,” she says, “and I’ll do my best to represent not only MBO, but the entire Bahamas well.”
No stranger to the stage, Ordain is a student and assistant instructor at the Yodephy Dance & Modeling Academy, with whom she has danced and modeled professionally for five years. She hopes to capitalize on this experience by winning the Miss World Talent competition, which is one of three “fast track” events in the pageant that could land her an automatic spot among the final 15 contenders. The three fast track events – Beach Beauty, Talent, and Beauty with a Purpose – will be open to all contestants, and will recognize the delegates with special qualities.
Apart from her efforts in the Talent Competition, the Bahamian public is being called on to assist Ordain in her quest to make the Miss World finals. Once again, the Miss World Organization is introducing a new voting system that is set to produce the largest global TV voting event. With a record number of contestants and an innovative new voting system, Miss World 2005 is set to make television history as the public will choose six new Miss World ambassadors.
Six ‘Vote For Me’ TV specials will present contestants from each continental zone and invite the global television audience to cast votes to determine the first Miss World Northern Europe, Miss World Southern Europe, Miss World Asia Pacific, Miss World Africa, Miss World Americas, Miss World Caribbean - and ultimately the overall winner of Miss World 2005.
Miss World – The Final is the World’s largest live annual TV event with viewing figures of two billion. With a record 115 contestants undertaking a month-long tour of China to compete for this year’s title, Miss World 2005 is set to be the most lavish spectacular in the festival’s 54 year history.
Each contestant will be allocated a number for worldwide SMS voting or via IVR in their particular country. These numbers will be prominently displayed on television graphics and in media. Viewers may vote for two contestants from their continent to go through to the Miss World Continental Finals, although there is no limit on the number of votes they may cast.
After each show, points will be awarded according to a voting-points structure. An effective formula will ensure that votes from all countries equate, regardless of the size of population, voting medium or overall number of votes. Votes originating from a country are counted and the contestants ranked according to the number of votes received from that country. Contestants’ scores are added for every country within their continental zone, with votes from outside their continent being accumulated as one voting ‘country’.
They are then allocated points aligned to their ranking – 12 for the contestant with the most votes, ten for the second placed and so on to tenth place, who receives two points. One point is given to all contestants ranked below tenth place.
The three Fast Track winners will join the Continental Final applicable to them. If a Fast Track winner also finishes first or second in their continental vote, the contestant placed third from that continent will go through to the Continental Final.
Viewers will have the chance to cast votes for their favorite girls from the first Miss World Asia Pacific ‘Vote For Me’ special on 21st November until 12 hours before the start of the two-hour live televised Final from Sanya, on 10th December.
In Miss World – The Final, the winners of three Fast Track events will join the 12 Continental Finalists - two from each zone – ensuring that the final line-up is truly representative of the World.
Then it is down to the judging panel to make their final deliberations and name the six continental winners and for Miss World Organization Chairman Mrs. Julia Morley to announce the overall Miss World 2005.
Ordain is hopeful that she will be among that final group. She is scheduled to leave for China on November 9th.

>on television graphics and in media. Viewers may vote
>for two contestants from their continent to go through

The Queen and the runners-up: Raquel Wright, (second left) poses with second place winner Shemille Blake(left), and two third place winners, Carolyn Yapp and Chavoy Gordon.
THE MISS Universe Pageant is set for May, 2005 in Bangkok Thailand and entries for the local version of the competition are still open. According to pageant organisers, Pulse, the Jamaica preliminary to the Miss Universe Pageant is attracting a number of outstanding entries this year. Even so, entry to the Miss Jamaica Universe Beauty Pageant for 2005 has been extended to Thursday, March 10, at 4:30 p.m.
Miss Jamaica Universe 2004, Christine Straw, claimed a top spot as a finalist in the 2004 coronation show in Ecuador.
Though Jamaica has never copped the coveted Miss Universe title, it has an enviable record, claiming four top ten finishes in addition to a fourth place in Kimberley Mais (1991).
PULSE MAKES APPEAL
Pulse is appealing to the most beautiful and otherwise qualified Jamaican young women to take up the challenge by entering the competition. "Too often, it is believed, Jamaica's best potential contestants stay on the sidelines. If Jamaica is to win, this must change," a release from the agency quoted.
The winner will this year receive over $2,000,000.00 in prizes (including $200,000 in cash) and an opportunity to be Miss Jamaica and to make the memorable journey to Thailand in search of the Miss Universe title.
Contestants should be between 18 and 26 years old on February 1, this year, never been married, never had a child, be Jamaican and should have the necessary beauty of face and body, intelligence, awareness and charm to compete effectively with the best in the world. Potential contestants should visit Pulse at 38a Trafalgar Road, New Kingston; call 968 1089-90 or email: pulse44@kasnet.com

MISS JAMAICA WORLD 2005 -- WEB MASTER, 09:21:18 09/17/05 Sat [1]

Terri-Karelle Griffith wore the crown of Miss Jamaica World 2005, at Sunday night's coronation ceremony held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. Already fluent in French and Spanish, Griffith may soon be able to add Cantonese or Mandarin to her language skills as she prepares for Miss World 2005 in Sanya, China, this December.
"I'm so shocked I can't even cry", mouthed the 23-year-old "Miss O'Riley's" to her fellow beauty queens as they assisted her in pinning the crown to Griffith's self-proclaimed "puff". By her side were first runner-up Peta-Gaye Walker (Miss Watt's New), second runner-up Nalini Banhan (Miss Water Falls) and the respective fourth and fifth place winners, Ravn Rasheeda (Miss Empire Supermarket) and Sharice Fernander (Miss Libresse). 2004 winner Tonoya Toyloy gave a fond farewell, while 2003's Jade Fulford made a cameo appearance.
"I'm extremely honoured and privileged to represent my country", said the former Campion College and current veterinary student at the Central University of Las Villas in Cuba, as she finished her 'photo ops' beside her new Mini Cooper valued at over $2.5m.
"The first thing I'm going to do is pray, because without God, I wouldn't be here", she added while unsuccessfully trying to get to her mother amidst the excitement.
The five-foot-nine trained dancer also took home the sectional prize for talent, as well as that for Most Aware and Most Congenial, according to 13 of her fellow contestants. Chants of "Terri, Terri!" indicated that Griffith was a crowd favourite that night, but another crowd favourite, Nalini Banhan, won the Spartan public vote, based on calls received up to midnight last Friday.
Danielle Lowe (Miss Acropolis) won the prize for Miss Jamaica World Model, while Peta-Gaye Walker took home prizes for Miss Jamaica World Sports and Beach Beauty. Some prizes were determined by earlier events.
On the question of "What quality do you most admire in people?", the new Miss Jamaica said "open-minded people. because those are the ones who readily embrace people of different backgrounds, cultures and colours." Other questions posed to contestants ranged from describing one's best personality trait, to indicating the lessons to be learnt from the recent Hurricane Katrina disaster. Nerves and other factors took their toll on some responses, but thankfully none brought jeers from audience members. The ladies modelled the usual swimsuit and evening wear, this year respectively provided by Training Camp and Uzuri International. There was nothing particularly exiting about the fashions although the crowned buzzed when a 'crack' of flesh peeked through the back of one of the low-cut evening gowns. Fortunately, the young lady in question managed to play off the 'peek-a-boo' affair.

Despite a few technical glitches and empty minutes, the coronation show was punctual and generally ran smoothly for its approximately 150-minute span. Kudos to the co-ordinator and production team in that respect! A display of male chests opened the show and was screamingly received by female audience members. The contestants followed later on with a mini 'Hawaiinesque' dance.
The Dance Collective entered with a techno number and, later on, with a not-so-fiery Latin dance. Its duo of Shelly Ann Maxwell and Marlon Simms, to John Legend's Ordinary People, got the best response. Tony Gregory lent his vocals, and a little of his legs, to a performance of I Want It Now.
Later on, Miss Jamaica World 1976, Cindy Breakespeare, performed covers of Fallen and Don't Know Why I Didn't Come.
The 10 judges included chief judge Tommy James, Gordon Arnold and past Miss Jamaica winners such as Lisa Hanna.
The evening's MCs were Ed Gallimore, Paula Ann Porter and Berette MaCaulay. The 29th staging of Miss Jamaica World was dedicated to the recently deceased Leslie Kiddoe, who had done set design on earlier shows.

Miss Jamaica World 2005 Terri-Karelle Griffith is flanked by her runners-up Peta-Gaye Walker (Miss Watt's New - left) and second runner-up Nalini Banhan (Miss Water Falls)

MBO acquires Miss World franchise! -- MBO, 13:35:55 08/31/05 Wed [1]
PRESS RELEASE
For immediate release
Miss Bahamas Organization Acquires Miss World Franchise; Suitable Candidate Being Sought To Represent The Bahamas at International Event
Nassau, Bahamas (MBO) August 31, 2005 -- The Miss Bahamas Organization® has been selected by the Miss World Organization Ltd. to be its licensed pageant system in The Bahamas. As a result of this new partnership, winners of MBO’s Miss Bahamas Pageants will compete at the prestigious international beauty competition.
Just days after announcing its launch, executives of the Miss Bahamas Organization® were once again before the media today, this time announcing MBO’s acquisition of the coveted Miss World franchise. The Miss World Organization Ltd. has chosen MBO to become the exclusive licensee allowed to conduct a contest to select a representative who will represent The Bahamas in the Miss World contest. The decision was made after Miss World executives read about MBO’s launch on the internet. “Apparently, they had been searching for a suitable representative in The Bahamas for some time,” says MBO President Michelle Malcolm. “However, it wasn’t until reading about us and recognizing what a solid foundation MBO has that they decided to extend the invitation.”
Prior to now, the Miss World franchise was held in The Bahamas by the Grand Bahama based Miss Bahamas Company Ltd., which acquired the franchise back in 1998. However, the company has not held a pageant for a number of years. In spite of this, MBO did not pursue the Miss World franchise because it was thought to be unavailable. “We were pleasantly surprised to receive an email from the Miss World Organization exactly one week after our launch, saying they wanted to know more about us,” says Malcolm. “We immediately responded and the rest, as they say, is history,” she concludes.
Birthed in 1951 by the late Eric Morley, the Miss World competition is today one of the world’s biggest and most loved events. With more than 140 licensees around the world, it attracts more than a hundred beauty queens each year. It is also one of Great Britain’s biggest generators of money for children’s charities, having now raised an incredible £100,000,000, thanks to its theme “Beauty with a Purpose” that was created by Julia Morley 25 years ago. This incredible success is largely because of the extremely strong and popular Miss World brand that has developed over the last 53 years. This year’s Miss World pageant will be held in Sanya, China in December.
Suitable young women between the ages of 17 and 24 are being sought to compete in a private screening for the opportunity to represent The Bahamas in this year’s Miss World competition. Entrants should be beautiful in form and face, graceful, intelligent and charming, while possessing poise, a pleasing character, and high moral convictions. Candidates must be single, must not have children, nor have ever been pregnant or given birth. Minimum height requirement is 5’ 5” and maximum height requirement is 6’ 2”. Weight must be proportionate to height. Candidates should be of Bahamian ancestry, or citizens of The Bahamas, and hold a Bahamian passport. The Miss Bahamas Organization® reserves the right to refuse an application or dismiss a contestant, using the Organization’s codes and regulations as the basis for its decision. Applicant must submit a headshot and a full body shot of her own choice for review with her application. This may be used for publicity purposes and for web/press releases. HEY CHOCOLATE HUNK,
ARE YOU BLIND OR WHAT? THERE ARE ONLY TWO GIRLS IN THE COMPETITION THAT COULD COMPETE INTERNATIONALLY.
1. PETA AGYE WALKER & 2 . NAHLINI BAHLIN
THE REST SHOULD HAVE NEVER BOTHER TO ENTER.CANDACE THORBOURNE SHOULD HAVE RE-ENTER THE PAGEANT.
I GUESS THE JAMAICAN PEOPLE ARE GETTING PISSED WITH THE STUPIDITY OF JUDGES.
THE CONTESTANTS AT MISS JAMAICA UNIVERSE WERE PRETTIER.

I like Terri-Karelle, but Nalini and Peta-Gaye are also very popular. I think the top 4 will be them and Sharice. But none of them are real stunners like Carolyn.
[Edit]
HEY GUYS MY ANNUAL REPORTS ON THE 1ST LOOK OF THIS YEARS FINALISTS -- CHOCOLATE HUNK, 14:02:22 08/22/05 Mon [1]
OK, 4 STARTERS, THIS YEARS BATCH IS NO WAY AS COMPETITIVE, NOT EVEN HALF AS CLOSE AS LAST YEARS GROUP.
WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR PAGEANT INDUSTRY, SORRY THERE IS NONE.
WELL ENOUGH TIME WASTING HERE ARE MY PREDICTIONS.
SEEING THAT THIS YEAR THERE ARE ONLY 16 GIRLS, I GUESS THERE WILL BE A TOP 9 AND NOT TOP 10. SO HERE GOES.
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER
NALINI BANHAN - THE ONE TO BEAT
PETAGAY WALKER
TERI KARELLE GRIFFITHS - MOST BEAUTIFUL AND WELL TONED FULL BLACK CONTEATSTNT
JHENELLE RUDD (CUTE BABY FACE AND OBVIOUS AMAZING AND CONFIDENT PERSONALITY)
SHARICE FERNANDER - COULD THIS BE HER YEAR, I WOULDNT BE SURPRISED BUT SHE WILL HAVE TO KNOCK HEADS WITH NALINI AND PETAGAY, IF THEY ARNET AS INTELLIGENT AS SHARICE, THEN SHE'S OUR GIRL 4 THIS YEAR.
DABRALEE LEWIS - OBVIOUSLY THE ONLY CONTENDER FOR THE PRZE OF MISS JA WORLD MODEL (5''9)
LISANDRA RICKARDS - sHORT BUT AMAZING LOOK (TYPICAL PAGEANTRY LOOK)
HONOURABLE MENTIONS : dANIELLE LOWE AND CHRISTOL WILSON.
REMEMBER PEOPLE THESE ARE EARLY DAYS YET BUT REMEMBER TO VOTE FOR 1)NALINI 2)SHARICE 3)PETAGAYE - THE ONLY CONTENDERS FOR THIS YEARS CONTEST.
PS: WHAT HAPPENED DID BMOBILE FALL OUT WITH THE ORGANIZERS (LOL) I GUESS WHAT CAROLYN YAPP AND CANDACE THOUBOURNE SAID ABOUT LAST YEARS VOTING SYSTEM LEADING TO THE EVENTUAL PLACEMENT OF TONOYA (DONT YALL JUST LOVE HER), HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THIS.
NE WAYS EARLY DAYS YET BUT BEAR NALALINI IN MIND. LISA HANNA/ JADE FULFORD LOOK ALIKE !!!!!!!

The Hottest Miss TEEN USA Review. -- Jessika, 17:53:20 08/07/05 Sun [1]
This year’s Miss Teen USA is indeed among the most competitive ever, if not the most competitive Teen pageant which is a sharp contract to this year’s Miss USA which was weaker than the average. Here is what I expect will happen on Monday. Have yourself a great evening tomorrow evening or in Derek’s case on Wednesday. Time to begin Jessika’s HOT REVIEW of Miss Teen USA 2005.
51 Arizona, 50 Connecticut, 49 Arkansas, 48 Tennessee, 47 Georgia, 46 New Hampshire, 45 Indiana, 44 Maine, 43 Utah, 42 Delaware, 41 Illinois
For some reason some of the girls in this group did not shine. Utah has by far the worst dress of the competition and is generally too overhyped. It is unfortunate and surprising to see states such as Tennessee and Georgia with relatively weak delegates this year. Arkansas seems like a nice girl but the fact is that she’s a pageant patty.
40 Missouri, 39 New Jersey, 38 South Dakota, 37 Montana, 36 Florida, 35 Washington, 34 Louisiana, 33 North Dakota, 32 Wisconsin, 31 Hawaii
One of the pre-pageant favorites Louisiana is in these group. Some of the ladies in this bunch have a great catwalk and presentation such as North Dakota and Wisconsin. All in all there are already many competitive ladies in this group.
30 Idaho – A young and sweet blonde who id very well especially in swimsuit, however her EG will be her undoing.
29 Kentucky – A huge pre-pageant fav but it somehow went a bit downhill in Baton Rouge, still on a basis of her swimsuit she’s still a possibility for top 15, although a remote one.
28 Vermont – Same as with New Mexico, her good close-up and swimsuit figure deserve our attention.
27 Nevada – Did an excellent job and for a lady of her height the performance is truly remarkable.
26 Pennsylvania – Overall performed well as expected, especially in swimsuit but simply didn’t stand out among the blondes.
25 Colorado – Another lady that surprised during preliminaries with her freshness and great calwalk. Performed very well and her unique looks stand out.
24 New Mexico – Did a good job overall but unfortunately the facial factor comes into play. Certainly one of the best ladies from New Mexico.
23 Wyoming – One of the major surprises of the pageant, performed well in every competition.
22 Massachussetts – Did a good job overall and stood out with her looks. If she wore a better gown, top 15 would have been hers.
21 New York – She performed well, yes she comes across a bit arrogant but her swimsuit presentation is certainly among the best and most vivacious ones.
20 Nebraska – Kelsy delivered quite good performance in both EG and swimsuit, she does stand out among the blondes with her feautures.
19 Rhode Island – Certainly an interesing delegate who performed well overall and stood out with her looks.
18 South Carolina – After falling off my list at the beginning of the pageant, this pre-pageant favorite delivered a nice presentation and redeemed herself for a slow start. Top 15 is within her reach.
17 West Virginia – Overall she’s overhyped and not that tall but her sleek physique is among the best ones in the pageant.
16 Iowa – She performed to the best of her abilities and made all the right choices, moreove she’s one of the tallest ladies.
Top 15
15 District of Columbia – delivered an excellent swimsuit presentation + she interviews very well, would have been a top contender with more of a natural haircolor. Still, she’s underrated BIG time. She’s on the line but I have a hint she’ll make it.
14 Ohio – Performed pretty well from the beginning to the end. My guess is that she’s pretty close to the cutting line but what makes a difference is her EG which is better than some of her direct competitors for these 2 or 3 last spots.
13 Minnesota – Amazing face and very good in swimsuit but the lack of catwalk skills and average gown will keep her here. Still, did a great job for the first times and will be up there. My sentimental fav.
12 Alaska – This petite lady makes me think of pin-ups of the 50s and 60s, although her styling is a bit old-fashioned, she’s simply stellar in both EG and swimsuit. Not only did she choose of the best swimsuits but also her calwalk is among the very best.
11 Kansas – Again, she’s got an amazing face but neither her swimsuit not her gown are among the best. Still, that confidence is amazing so in my opinion she’ll make it and she’ll deserve. LaTasha is a living proof that confidence can get you far.
10 North Carolina – Another extremly underrated lady, she’s in the top 3 for swimsuit alone plus her interview is simply great as well. Her gown is not among the best to put it mildly but on the other hand it’s far from nightmare-ish.
09 Oregon – Jenna is among the most consistent ladies this year. Tall with sleek physique and amazing gown presentation, she’s here to fight and she could enter the top 5.
08 Mississippi – One of the major surprises of this pageant, she did perform to the very best of the abilities especially in swimsuit and interview, Mississippi did extremly well this year. After I saw her SS I was like WOW, so even her average EG suddenly is not an issue, she’s in.
07 Oklahoma – To me, she’s one of the two best faces of the pageant, simply amazing, moreover she has a smoking hot body, ( top 5 for body itself ). Her gown is what will probably prevent her from going to the top 5, still she’s a delegate that did an amazing job in my opinion.
06 Michigan – Amazing face, this tall 5’11” and intelligent lady will be up there. I like her gown a lot, she is unfairly criticized by many but again her catwalk skills may prevent her from entering the top 5.
05 Maryland – In one word, simply amazing. The best transformation since she won her state pageant. Did very well in both EG and swimsuit and should have no problem whatsoever to get to the top 10 and most likely to the top 5.
04 Alabama – This sexy bombshell is the most underrated delegate this year. Everything about her presentation is simply perfect. She’s got by far the best body of the pageant and probably one of the very best EG. Her face is by all means nice but others are slighly more telegenic in my opinion.
03 Texas – In terms of the facial beauty April is up there with Oklahoma as two most perfect ladies. She did everything perfectly however in a year so competitive as this one things like the right EG, evening figure and her catwalk will count and she won’t end up as the winner.
02 California – Amazing delegate, in one word amazing. Confident with one of the most amazing swimsuit presentations ever at Teen USA, her EG choice is by all means ok but in a year so competitive as this one, Virginia will have the edge.
01 Virginia – There is absolutely nothing about this lady that is not perfect, she is tall, she has one of the best swimsuit and EG presentations. She made all of the right choices and in the see of blondes, this half-Latina brunette will emerge as the winner. The most complete of them all, she’ll be a great follow-up to Shelley.

CONGRATULATIONS ~ RAQUEL WRIGHT -- MISS JAMAICA UNIVERSE 2005, 09:17:55 04/26/05 Tue [2]

Raquel Wright is Miss Jamaica Universe 2005
The Queen and the runners-up: Raquel Wright, (second left) poses with second place winner Shemille Blake(left), and two third place winners, Carolyn Yapp and Chavoy Gordon.
EVEN BY pageant standards, the script turned with stunning swiftness. When Raquel Wright was announced as Miss Jamaica Universe 2005 at the grand coronation on Sunday night, it was the completion of a surprise ending to an intricately woven plot.
And never, maybe, was a third place announcement - joint, at that - met with such obvious shock.
By beauty pageant standards Carolyn Yapp was supposed to have been the winner of the pageant.
Everything was in place, it seemed, the right gown (she won for 'Best in Evening Wear'), the right attitude (she swung her shoulders and hips and smiled confidently as she paraded on stage throughout the night) and the backing of 'the people' (she won the 'People's Choice Award' and had her own cheering team present). There were at least two groups in the Hilton ballroom, one on each side, cheering for Carolyn, bearing banners with her name.
Given all of that, plus the fact that she had the experience to boot, having placed a very near second in the Miss Jamaica World pageant last year and in that competition the 'people's choice', Tonoya Toyloy, had won, it seemed she should have won on Sunday.
SO WHY DIDN'T SHE?
Well, there were two (perhaps three) other girls who strutted in her way, the most impressive of which was the eventual winner, 23 year-old Raquel Wright. She won $2 million in cash and prizes the coveted crown and the title, the Miss Universe winner's wardrobe and the opportunity to represent Jamaica at the Miss Universe pagent in Bangkok, Thailand on May 31.
But, the look of utter disappointment on the face of the second runner-up Yapp, even as she tried desperately, but in vain to cover it with a smile, was enough to make a sympathetic audience member want to cry. She looked like she would cry as she shared third place, another pageant plot twist, with Chavoy Gordon.
Shemille Blake, a crowd favourite, placed second and a very ecstatic Raquel Wright, became the new Miss Jamaica Universe. Raquel also won the 'Most Congenial' contestant award, what is thought to be the 'booby prize' of pageants, usually reserved for the girl who never stood a chance of winning the title in the first place.
WHAT A TWIST
Shemille Blake won prizes for being the 'Most Aware' and 'Most Photogenic' contestant, while Chavoy won for being the 'Best in Swimsuit'. Natalia de Lisser completed the top five.
The disappointment of one contestant did not overshadow the joy of another, though, and Raquel celebrated with her friends, family and well-wishers afterwards. "It's been a great experience," she breathed, between sips of water and trying to compose herself. "I wasn't sure I was going to win, but I think I am quite deserving," she said.
Raquel wore a red, sequinned gown with a satin strap that crossed one shoulder, designed by Uzuri. In fact, Uzuri designed all the gowns worn by the 13 contestants.
The show, which started promptly at 8 p.m. was enjoyable throughout and, with the exception of a few minor glitches, ran smoothly. After a dramatic opening which served to introduce the finalists in a 'Chicago'-styled vaudeville presentation, the show continued with the contestants in swimwear by Mushroom.
Amid the beauty and pageantry of the ceremony, the show went a bit down to earth with performances by singer G-Whiz, with Treat Her Like a Lady, and the 'Crew Demolition' dance group, with a breakdance routine.
Contestants also added to the performance segment of the show, with songs, poems and mini skits about love and self-affirmation in a script that was well rehearsed and well presented. This talent section, however, did more to highlight the lack thereof, with quite a few of the contestants singing flat and off-key. Djavila Smith, however, the sole dancer of the finalists, stuck to something with which she is obviously familiar and gave what may have been the best (though very brief) performance of the group.
In the end, the package was well presented and at the end of the night, none could be heard complaining of the outcome - not even one disappointed contestant.

CONGRATULATIONS ~ RAQUEL WRIGHT -- MISS JAMAICA UNIVERSE 2005, 09:16:48 04/26/05 Tue [1]

MISS WRITGHT TAKES THE CROWN -- CONGRATULATIONS, 09:15:38 04/26/05 Tue [1]
Raquel has priorities 'wright'
Miss Jamaica Universe 2005, Raquel Wright poses during the Grand Coronation show on Sunday at the Hilton Kingston Hotel.
ONE DAY, as Raquel Wright stood on the Piazza d'espana, one of Rome's major tourist attractions, a man walked up to her with a long stemmed red rose. "This is for you," he said. "You are a very lucky woman."
This is, in her words, the most interesting thing that has happened to her. But that was before the Grand Coronation of the 2005 Miss Jamaica Universe last Sunday, when Raquel walked away with the coveted crown at the Hilton Hotel in New Kingston.
That man may have issued prophetic words, but one is wont to think that Raquel's win had a bit more to do with preparation and hard work than luck.
Raquel grew up in Kingston, where she attended the St. Andrew High School for girls. She describes her childhood as one filled with "lots of fun and excitement, guided by high standards and principles, backed by strong family ties". Having earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and Politics at Itacha University (New York), Raquel is set to begin studying Law following her reign as Miss Jamaica Universe, or Miss Universe, given the outcome of the international competition.
As we sit down for the interview, the smile from meeting members of the newsroomlingering on her face , she seems a very gracious and charming woman in her words, 'bubbly'. As the question of appearance is raised, Raquel is the first to point out her 'height problem'.
There is really no problem with her height, as she is 5'6". While that is the average height for many women, and Jamaicans are averse to their beauty queens being 'average' in any way in pageant jargon 5'6" translates to 'short'.
Many people, she says, have pointed to her height as a drawback to her winning the coveted crown in Bangkok, Thailand, where the 2005 Miss Universe will be crowned on May 31.
"It wasn't until Sunday night that people said 'you're not worried about your height?' and that was the first time in two months that I actually gave it some thought," she said.
But height is just about the only thing 'average' about Raquel. She has an effervescent personality that is heady and contagious, and a maturity and focus that belie her 23 years. Plus, in her opinion (and she says this in a way that brooks no objection), "I really think I'm a very unique person in terms of the package that Raquel has to offer".
It is a confidence which carries to the to the question that must be asked for a second time, the first being when Tonoya Toyloy won the Miss Jamaica World title in 2004. Given the fact that you do not look like the traditional beauty, (think Christine Straw, MJU 2004, Kimberly Mais, MJU 1991, Sandra Foster, MJU 1989, and even the reigning Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins) what do you think are your chances in the Miss Universe Competition?
Raquel thinks her chances are great, just like any other contestant before her, traditional beauty or not. She invokes the memory of Lisa Hanna, Miss World 1993, whom she says many people thought was 'too dark', and "the jewel of the Caribbean", Wendy Fitzwilliam, who won the Miss Universe title for Trinidad in 1998 and who was also 'very dark' by public opinion.
Raquel is a beautiful girl, by any standard. And, as she points out, she possesses that which is even more valuable than the height. She is confident and intelligent, qualities which undobtedly impressed the judges.
"I think my personality and my intelligence set me... You know, I think I make up in so many other areas, so you don't see the five foot six, you see the bubbling, charismatic person and I think that is what counts more than being light-skinned and tall and 'beautiful', traditionally," she said.
"I think it really is just what you have to offer, what else you have to offer. And I think I was able to be a combination of all those things ..." She pauses, adds "minus the height" and laughs.
Raquel, also thinks that people are beginning, as she says, "to understand that beauty is not necessarily defined by physical attributes and limited by physical attributes."
ONE LOOK
"We have a plethora of races and ethnic groups in Jamaica and so to continue sending one look does not even make sense," she said.
There is no hint of malice in her voice or attitude as she says this. In fact, one does not think of malice in her company. So there is some surprise when she explains that her biggest concern going into the pageant was, in fact, malice.
"One of my biggest fears was going into a pool of contestants who would not necessarily be...", she pauses to consider, "warm." "Because I'm a friendly person. I'm a very real person," she says. If you were to ask one of the other contestant, they would most likely agree. In fact, she received the Most Congenial prize during her coronation, decided by the contestants, a prize she says means a lot.
"It is dear to my heart, because that's really how I am. I'm very friendly," she says.
Raquel perceives herself in a very positive and wholesome way and often speaks in the third person, reflecting someone who has some personal insight.
She is also aware of the fact that Jamaica has never won a Miss Universe title and that whoever breaks that trend would be making history. The idea is not daunting.
WANT TO MAKE HISTORY
"I'm going in with the mentality that I want to be the first. I want to make history. I want to be the first Miss Jamaica (to win Miss Universe). I don't feel pressured. I feel encouraged and driven to do it. I think it is not necessarily what people want for me, but what I want for myself. So I guess it would be more of a pressure issue if I thought 'oh I'm Miss Jamaica, I have to do this'."
And the introspection comes. "It's more like 'you know what Raquel, I think that you really stand a chance. I think that you have a lot to offer. You love your country and you will be a good representative of your country."
"I dont feel pressured. I feel very driven and passionate about it."
One of her main goals in representing Jamaica, she says, is to help dispel the negative stereotypes of the country. "I want to change the negative views on Jamaica, that we're an aggressive, crime-ridden and violent society. I want to go there and prove to people that I represent an island of potential."
She relates an incident when she was on her way from Germany and was greeted at immigration by an officer who was impressed with the fact that she is a Jamaican. In a German accent she imitates what was apparently a humorous incident of being lauded for being born in the country of "Bob Marley, reggae and jerk chicken."
"You go anywhere in the world," (she acts out the scene in a fake German accent, while imitating the man's animated response) "everybody know Jamaica."
It is this lighter, more positive side of Jamaica that Raquel says she wants to promote, even while admitting that the crime problem will no doubt be an issue.
Outside the competition, though, there is one thing that bothers Raquel. "I worry about disappointing the people I love and disappointing myself."

Miss JA Universe 2005 -- Nanette, 14:11:48 03/06/05 Sun [1]
Miss Jamaica Universe Entries Close March 10
Press Release (Pulse Entertainment Group Ltd)
(Mar-03-2005)
Entry to the Miss Jamaica Universe Beauty Pageant for 2005 close on Thursday, March 10 at 4:30pm. The Jamaica preliminary to the world’s most celebrated beauty spectacle, Miss Universe, is attracting a number of outstanding entries. With last year’s winner Christine Straw claiming a top spot as a finalist in the 2004 Coronation show in Ecuador, Jamaica is on everyone’s radar. It is conceivable that 2005 could be the year in which the magic happens and a Jamaican takes the crown. However to accomplish this objective, Pulse is appealing to the most beautiful and otherwise qualified Jamaican young women to take up the challenge by entering, thereby giving our country a real opportunity to win. Too often, it is believed, Jamaica’s best potential contestants stay on the sidelines. If Jamaica is to win, this must change.
Over $2,000,000.00 in prizes (including $200,000 in cash) is at stake. Also up for grabs is an opportunity to be Miss Jamaica and to make the memorable journey to Thailand in search of the Miss Universe title. This would mean instant recognition, for both the winner and Jamaica, by close to a billion viewers around the world. Contestants should be between 18 and 26 years old on February 1, this year, never been married, never had a child, be Jamaican and should have the necessary beauty of face and body, intelligence, awareness and charm to compete effectively with the best in the world. Contestants should visit Pulse at 38a Trafalgar Road, New Kingston; call 968 1089-90 or email pulse44@kasnet.com.
Although Jamaica has never won, it has an enviable record claiming 4 top ten finishes and a fourth place in Kimberley Mais in 1991. Other top ten finalists were Sandra Foster, Nicole Haughton and last year’s success Christine Straw. Other outstanding representatives included Rachel Stuart, Trudy Ferguson and Sanya Hughes (the world favourite for the title in Puerto Rico). Pulse is also appealing to the business community to contribute to this year’s effort as Jamaica prepares a winner to compete with the mighty North and South Americans.
This year’s Jamaica preliminary is expected to be spectacular and the event will benefit from changes made by Pulse over the past two years, in order to make the event more modern, bigger, better and more dynamic. This has been achieved through new partnerships, which will be announced shortly.
The Miss Universe Pageant was founded in Miami Beach in 1951 and provides opportunities— mentoring, career training, resources and life experiences – for women to be personally enriched through the organization. The titleholders of Miss Universe personify the combination of beauty and intelligence that defines the 21st Century. The current winner is 21-year-old Jennifer Hawkins from Sydney, Australia. Miss Universe 2005 will be crowned in Bangkok, Thailand at the end of May.

Miss Jamaica Universe Entries Close February 26
Thursday, February 17, 2005
Christine Straw
Entries for the Miss Jamaica Universe Beauty Pageant 2005 close on February 26. The Jamaica preliminary to the world's most celebrated beauty spectacle, Miss Universe is attracting a number of outstanding entries. With last year's winner Christine Straw claiming a top spot as a finalist in the 2004 Coronation show in Ecuador, Jamaica is on everyone's radar. It is conceivable that 2005 could be the year in which the magic happens and a Jamaican takes the crown.
However, to accomplish this objective, Pulse is appealing to the most beautiful and otherwise qualified Jamaican young women to take up the challenge by entering, thereby giving our country a real opportunity to win. Too often, it is believed, Jamaica's best potential contestants stay on the sidelines.

What is going on with Miss Jamaica Universe? Is it going to be another closed pageant? How soon will the pageant be. Kingsley Cooper had all kinds of big talk last year, but nothing at all seems to have come of it. I don't expect whoever wins will be adequately prepared, unless it's a previous contestant or MJW winner.

JAMAICA - Tonoya Anne Toyloy
Age: 24
Occupation: Pharmacy Assistant
Height: 176
Jamaica
© MWO
Tonoya grew up in the small residential area of Edgewater, a very friendly community on the outskirts of Kingston. Having achieved a Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree with First Class Honours, she is now about to embark on an exciting career in her chosen field. Her ambition is to own her own pharmacy. During her education Tonoya was the proud recipient of ten scholarships/Bursaries for academic performance and other awards. During her summer vacations she has been a Teacher’s Assistant, Airline Agent and a Pharmacy Assistant. Hobbies/sports interests are: Playing the piano, water colour painting, drawing, football, netball, lawn tennis, track and field.
Her motto is "Whatever I do, I will do it to the best of my ability".
Where did you grow up? Tell us a little about your home town/city, and family.
I grew up in the small residential area of Edgewater; a friendly neighbourhood where the children play together, the neighbours are kind and sharing. I come from a close-knit family that comprises both parents and a younger brother.
What Jobs have you done? What was the most interesting/bizarre?
I have been a Teacher’s Assistant, Airline Agent and Pharmacy Assistant during my summer vacations. The most interesting is that of the Pharmacy Assistant, as pharmacy is my passion. I received the opportunity to contribute to my community and meet diverse personalities.
What are your career ambitions, how do you plan to realise them?
By the time the Miss World Pageant is staged, I will be a Certified Registered Pharmacist with the goal of making a significant contribution to Health Care Development in Jamaica, initially by owning a Pharmacy in rural Jamaica, which offers a more comprehensive approach to health care.
What is the proudest moment of your life? (Not including winning your National Title)
The achievement of a Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree with First Class Honours, a goal I worked diligently for, for four years.
What was the funniest/most embarrassing moment of your life?
My most embarrassing moment occurred while shopping in the busy downtown Kingston dressed "to the nines", in a white pants suit, when a street person decided to put his "designer’s touch" on my outfit, which left me looking quite "raggedy".
How has your life changed since winning your National Title?
I have been elevated to the position of a role model and public figure, which affords me the opportunity for personal development and most importantly, the opportunity to contribute to my nation.
Tell us about an interesting event you have attended, or a person that you have met.
I attended the 8 Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Association Conference held in St Ann, Jamaica in August 2003. It was interesting as I was exposed to the development and scope of Pharmacy worldwide.
What would you like to do, if you became Miss World 2004?
1. Play my part in the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a major
problem that affects the whole world.
2. To also have a role in programmes that feed the world’s starving
children, as the children are our future.
If you had a personal motto what would it be?
I live my life guided by the following motto "Whatever I do, I will do it to the best of my ability".
Give details of any charitable work undertaken?
I volunteered as a Pharmacy Intern for the Caribbean Special Olympics, which was held in Jamaica in July 2004, ensuring that the athletes had access to necessary medication.
On an on-going basis, I am an active member of my Church’s Healing and Counselling Ministry, whose primary objective is to provide access to better health care in our surrounding communities.
More recently, I have been involved in the donation of needed supplies to The Jamaica Red Cross Society for persons affected by Hurricane Ivan that recently ravaged Jamaica in September

BRAZILIAN CROWNED MISS EARTH !!!
MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- Priscilla Meirelles, a medical student from Brazil, was named Miss Earth 2004 Sunday, winning a beauty pageant that promotes environmental concerns.
Meirelles, 21, bested 60 other candidates for the title in suburban Quezon City.
There are no first and runner-up finishers in the competition -- each of the final four receives a title. Yanina Gonzalez, a 24-year-old marketing student from Paraguay, was named Miss Fire; Murielle Celimene, an 18-year-old student from Martinique, was Miss Air, and Stephanie Lesage, a 20-year-old social economics student from Tahiti, was Miss Water.
The Miss Earth pageant, launched three years ago by a Philippine production outfit, requires candidates to be aware of environmental problems faced by their respective countries.
During 3 1/2 weeks in the Philippines, contestants helped clean a beach of trash, did farm work, planted mahogany trees, biked to promote clean air and released schools of fish into a reservoir in the north ahead of Sunday's event, organizers said.
Among the 11 judges was Vida Samadzai of Afghanistan. She was a contestant last year, when she was condemned in her conservative homeland for appearing in a bikini. There was no Afghan competitor this year.

TONOYA TAKES THE CROWN -- ...AND NOW ON TO SANYA TO TAKE ANOTHER!!!, 08:44:00 09/28/04 Tue [4]
The 'Public's Choice' takes Miss Jamaica Crown

Miss Jamaica World 2004 Tonoya Toyloy flanked by her runners-up Carolyn Yapp (first runner-up left) and Candace Thorbourne (second runner-up).
At the end of a night plagued with production hiccups and glitches, 24 year-old pharmacology intern Tonoya Toyloy was named Miss Jamaica World 2004, while 20 year-old university student Carolyn Yapp placed second, and 18 year-old Candace Thorbourne placed third. Crowd favourite Debbie-Ann McKreith and Jordanne Halsall completed the top-five lineup. The competition took place at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.
Toyloy, who wore the sash Miss Body Collections, was automatically a top-10 finalist, having won the Miss Jamaica Beach Beauty competition, and having received the highest number of votes in the B-Mobile public choice/vote. Later this year, Toyloy will travel to Sanya, China to represent Jamaica in the Miss World pageant, and she will also receive a scholarship from the University College of the Caribbean (UCC) valued at $500,000; a $250,000 modelling and advertising contract from Spartan Health Club; the Jergens $100,000 cash award; and the Miss World Wardrobe valued at more that $100,000.
This year's competition introduced several new features and saw others gaining in popularity. The B-mobile public vote, which allows members of the public to vote for their favourite contestant by calling or texting a designated number, gained significantly in popularity this year. In the Miss Jamaica World competition, although the public vote does contribute to the overall score of the winner, the winner must still receive the highest number of points awarded by the 10 judges at the coronation.
In addition to the 'Beach Beauty' title, which is somewhat of a replacement for the less-politically correct 'Best Figure' award of previous years, Spartan - the show's producers - added two more mini-titles, Miss Jamaica Talent and Miss Jamaica Sport. Candace Thorbourne, who finished in third place, walked away with $10,000 cash for winning the talent award, while Azima Akimbebe, the long-tressed Kung-Fu master took the sport award.

TONOYA TAKES THE CROWN -- COMGRATULATIONS TONOYA - U'VE MADE US PROUD!!!, 08:49:17 09/28/04 Tue [1]
Crowd favourite takes crown
A Queen and two Princesses: Miss Jamaica World 2004, Tonoya Toyloy, is flanked by second place and 'First Princess', Carolyn Yapp and third place and 'Second Princess', Candace Thorbourne. - WINSTON SILL/Freelance Photographer
THE GLITZ, glamour and glorious pageantry of the Miss Jamaica World competition ended on Sunday night with the crowning of a new queen.
Twenty-four-year-old Pharmacy Intern, Tonoya Toyloy, walked away with the coveted crown and over a million dollars in cash and prizes.
Toyloy, who was also the winner of the Miss Jamaica World Public Vote, was an early favourite at the coronation. Along with Debbie-Ann McKreith, she seemed to have the majority of the crowd's support as whenever their names were announced, the ballroom of the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel erupted with shouts of approval.
McKreith, however, failed to place in the final three. Second place and Miss Jamaica World 1st Princess went to Carolyn Yapp, while third place and Miss Jamaica World 2nd Princess went to another crowd favourite, Candace Thorbourne. Thorbourne was also adjudged the most talented contestant. Jordanne Halsall and McKreith completed the top five.
VIDEO PRESENTATION
The lengthy coronation show was interpersed with video presentations of the twenty contestants during the mini competitions; dramatic dance presentations by dance troupes Xymaca and The National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC) and performances by male group VoiseMail and veteran crooner AJ Brown.
The presentation of the contestants began with the twenty beauties dancing to Elephant Man's 'Bad Mind', during which they introduced themselves. This presentation was well received by the crowd, but it was easily topped by the swimsuit parade during which the contestants appeared for the first time in the history of the pageant, in bikinis.
GOWN DISPLAY
The swimwear parade was followed by the gown display. The contestants appeared in gowns from Trends, Sophia Max Brown, Haute Couture De Dawn, from their personal collections, or designed by Uzuri.
One of the most beautiful gowns of the contest was worn by McKreith, a brown and yellow layered floor length gown with intricate patterns.
After the top ten contestants were announced the nail biting began. The question segment of the competition saw the contestants tackling questions as diverse in level of difficulty and in scope as How did Hurricane Ivan affect you? and How should the authorities deal with people who continue to build in those areas considered flood-prone?
At the end of the question segment the playing field seemed to be still level. However, with the announcement of the winner of the Public Vote, the balance seemed to have shifted a bit. The public counted as the eleventh judge and Toyloy was chosen by the public. Toyloy was also the winner of the Beach Beauty mini-competition.

BEAUTY, POISE AND INTELLIGENCE - A TRUE WINNER!! -- THAT SUMS UP TONOYA TOLOY MISS JAMAICA WORLD '04, 08:49:34 09/27/04 Mon [3]
Tonoya Toyloy - Ms. Body Collections

Charming, charismatic, smart and sassy. That’s the essence of Tonoya Toyloy, who just completed her BA in Pharmacy from the University of Technology, attaining a 1st Class Honors degree. She is currently doing her pharmacology internship at the University Hospital of the West Indies, but hopes to some day own her own chain of Pharmacies and work closely with her patients to ensure they get the best possible care available.
Tonoya has always been interested in medicine, and with her practical real-world approach to life, actually did a Pro’s and Con’s list of what area to get into, and realized that the overwhelming majority of Pro’s lead her to Pharmacy – a profession that allowed her balance her career with family life, which to her is of the utmost importance.
Not considered the party-animal type, Tonoya still enjoys the occasional get-together with friends, but prefers more intimate and relaxing endevours such as painting and drawing. She plays football and considers herself a pleasant and easy-going person – but asked the question “is it humble to say you’re humble?” in the interview – we believe a true testament to her modesty.

MISS TOLOY TOPS THE CRITERIA -- I SECOND THE MOTION.....HEAR HEAR!!!, 10:32:10 10/05/04 Tue [1]
Letter of the Day - Miss Jamaica tops on new criteria
published: Tuesday | October 5, 2004
THE EDITOR, Sir:
TO READ the criticisms levelled at the judges of the recent Miss Jamaica World competition, some from as far from the competition as Canada and the United States, one would believe that Miss Toyloy had no business entering the competition, much less to emerge victorious.
It might, therefore, be useful to examine the criteria, which our judges have used (and soon those in China), will be using to enable them to identify the most well-rounded female to represent the world. There are now new categories, which include facial attractiveness, overall figure, which includes skin and muscle tone, sports and talent abilities.
Let us now examine what Miss Toyloy brought to the table - she was the winner of the Miss Beach Beauty category (which replaces the former best figure) and includes skin and muscle tone; she is an accomplished classical pianist, and in the sports category, her free kick (shown on television) would have earned her admiration from members of the Brazilian women's team.
However, it was the other latent quality, which would have been more visible to the judges, than others, by virtue of their more sustained interaction, which emerged in her interview in your Sunday Edition (03/10/04). To begin with, the full-face close-up of Miss Toyloy displays a stunningly attractive young lady, and the interview conducted by Ms. Alicia Roache reveals a supremely confident, acutely aware and highly intelligent Jamaican. Not since the days of Lisa Hanna have I seen someone capable of conveying the depth of her personality in such a short interview.
Speaking for myself, and I imagine I am qualified to speak for the majority of the viewing public, who took the effort and time to cast their votes in her favour, I am proud to have Miss Toyloy represent me and my country, and I say to her "You go, girl!" and show the world what a true Jamaican beauty is, secure in the knowledge that thousands at home will be cheering you on.
I am, etc.,
HOWARD HAMILTON, Q.C.

LATEST - UPDATES ON MJW'04 -- MJW UPDATE, 09:39:08 09/17/04 Fri [8]
The finalists in the Miss Jamaica World 2004 competition.
THE FINALS of the Miss Jamaica World 2004 pageant has again been postponed, this time to Sunday, September 26.
The finals, initially scheduled for September 11, was postponed because of the threat of Hurricane Ivan, which struck Jamaica last weekend. It was since rescheduled for this Saturday, September 18, at 8:30 p.m. pending "restoration of electricity and availability of the venue", Mickey Haughton-James said on Monday. However, the pageant has been postponed once more because of "problems with water" at the event's venue the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston.
With the effects of Hurricane Ivan still challenging the staging of many entertainment activities, the local pageant has been affected also. "It is a little unfortunate that we have to proceed under these circumstances, but the girls have other commitments as well", said Haughton-James on Monday. "The mood of the people is more sombre than on a pageant, but we must proceed." The 20 finalists will still face a prejudging panel today and the Miss Jamaica World public vote will continue to the night of the coronation. The contestant who has the most public votes becomes an automatic top 10 finalist. The winner of the public vote will be sashed on coronation night when she, along with the winners of the talent, sports and beach beauty competitions, will each win a trophy and a cash prize of $10,000.
The women will compete for the coveted title along with over $1 million dollars in cash and prizes and the opportunity to represent her country at the Miss World 2004 pageant in China.
