because people, in their infinite stupidity and simultaneously desparate need to sound sophisticated, despite all evidence to the contrary, hear a saying that they think sounds like something that would make them seem smarter if they say, but of course, they mess it up, true to their ignorant nature.... ok maybe thats a little mean and oversimplifying, but i'm willing to bet it applies in most situations. All it takes to figure out the difference is about 5 brain cells :-p
