I don't like to think with an author's head when I'm reading something, I like to think with the character's head. If I can breathe together with them, that makes the story realistic for me, if their actions and thoughts are adequate.
Maybe I can't explain this correctly, but if my sweetheart would tell me "oh, we dated for a while, but things didn't work out, we're still friends though" I would be automatically suspicious. Especially with someone acting the way Billy did. I think he was very transparent, so was Brandon. I personally don't believe in the "friendship after love" fairytale. Not in a good, honest friendship anyway. There are always leftover emotions from one side or the other. But that's just the way I see it.
