Miss World contest heats up in Warsaw

By ROBERT R. REQUINTINA

Bb. Pilipinas-World Anna Maris Igpit made it to the semi-finals in the Miss World Beachwear fast-track category of the 2006 Miss World beauty contest now taking place in Warsaw, Poland.

At the pre-pageant contest held at the Grand Hotel Sopot in Poland, Igpit was among the 25 semi-finalists for the beach beauty title. But when narrowed down to 10 candidates, Igpit did not make it.

Miss Venezuela, whose motto is "Tomorrow, the sun will shine,’’ won in the pre-pageant category.

Apart from Miss Venezuela, two other contestants won in the fast-track events. Miss Northern Ireland was named Miss Talent and Miss Canada, Miss World Sportswomen.

The three beauties will now advance to the Top 16 semi-finalists, the rest of the whom will be announced during the finals on September 30 (October 1 in the Philippines). Another fast-track event — Beauty with a Purpose — will be announced in the finals. The winner will also join the elite 16 finalists.

During the finals, two finalists will be chosen from each contestant zone: AsiaPacific, Caribbean, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Africa and Americas. They will be chosen based on public choice from global voting and judges choice.

Despite the turnout at the beach beauty contest, observers said Igpit is making a good showing as one of the contestants to beat in the 56th Miss World pageant.

"At least she was included in the 25 candidates in the beach beauty category. There are more than 100 beautiful candidates in the contest, and somehow, judges took notice of her,’’ they said.

They added that the strongest contenders of Miss Philippines in the Asia-Pacific region are the delegates from Singapore and India.

Still the real test will happen on the coronation night. "We could only pray and vote for Miss Philippines.’’

Igpit was born and raised in Panglao, Bohol on April 7, 1987 to Allan and Ma. Socorro Igpit. Her family relocated to Cebu where she grew up.

Before Bb. Pilipinas, Igpit enjoyed being the toast of her provincemates. She was Miss Mandaue, Miss Bohol, and Miss Talisay among other beauty titles she garnered.

Igpit is into modelling as a part time job, but looks forward to becoming an international flight attendant to fulfill her dream of travelling around the world.

Her motto in life? "Live each day as if its your last...’’

Recently, local candidates have represented themselves well in the Miss World contest, though the crown has been very elusive for the Filipinas.

In 1993, Sharmain Gutierrez was named 2nd runner up and Asian and Oceania Queen of Beauty. The next year, Caroline Subijano made it to the semi-finals. Two years later, Daisy Reyes grabbed the Miss Personality award.

Then judges took notice of Katherine Manalo when he joined the semi-finals in 2002. The next year, Maria Rafaela Verdadero Yunon was named 4th runner-up; the next year, 2004, the Philippines represented by Ma. Karla Bautista placed 4th runner-up. Last year’s contestant also made it to the semi-finals.

Yet the country will definitely never forget the year when the Philippines placed 1st runner-up in the same contest. It was in 1973 when Evangeline Pascual won 1st runner-up.

The winner Marjorie Wallace of USA was dethroned. Controversy ensued and the Miss World crown was ready to Pascual. But the Filipina beauty decided to settle in her being a runner-up. These days, the issue still pops up during discussions among beauty pageant afficionados.
