first, will they be in pots, or planted directly in the ground... there are so many sub-tropical/tropical looking plants you can use, depending on how much winter protection you're willing to give... those banana looking plants probably are banana plants... there are a lot of different varieties of them, as well as different hights, or having different color leaves, and flowers too... please let us know what zone are you in... that could help with suggestions...
