It's probably a little late for this year, but you have plenty of time now to make plans for next year.
I would suggest placing large, decorative concrete planters where you desire the foliage plants. They can be moved if desired as the plants grow. Fill with good a moisture holding compost type soil. The richer, the better. Makes the tropical type plants grow faster, bigger, stronger, and with a deeper color. Then figure if you want tall, or shorter, or a combination of each. Banana plants grow tall, but you can get some varieties, such as the supper dwarf Cavendish that only get 2 & a half to 3 feet tall. Cannas are another good choice. They have a banana type leaf, but not as large. They also come in a large group of sizes, leaf colors, and have an assortment of flower colors. Then there's the fast growing, large leafed, yet not to tall elephant ears. They also have some different sizes, and some with colored leaves.
