i'm going into hospital on the 15th july 07 for surgery & plastic surgery, & thats all i've been told so far!!No-one can answer my questions & i have a few!! When i asked for information on VIN, as i had never heard of it, i was given a 3 page printout from the internet, it gave me the basic details about the condition but it had nothing in it about what to expect after the surgery, which is my main concern as i am a single mum to 2 boys, how am i going to cope??? can anybody out there share their experiences and advice with me please, i've spoke to family & friends who have never heard of this condition(WHY??) & 1 of those friends i mentioned is a student nurse!!! i have had this growth for around 10 years & have only been diagnosed since jan 07, again WHY?? Especially when i have had abnormal smears for around the same amount of time, i've also had a colposcopy done twice. . . .is there a link???And if all it takes to show changes in that area is a vinegar solution pad . . .why is it not part of the smear routine??? as women we are told what to look for when self-examining our breasts, but i have never been told that i should be self-examining my genital area, never mind what i should be looking for!! if i had then maybe i would have been treated before now & not facing surgery on the most intimate & delicate area of my body!! i'm feeling very alone & afraid & very confused, if there is anyone out there who has been through this procedure or is facing it in the near future and can give me a clue as to what to expect i would love to hear from you please!!

Hi Gillian,

What a pretty name! I hope you will find this website a continuing
resource of information and support from this great group of women!

I, too have had VIN and am currently using 5FU (Efudux 5%) chemo
cream to treat one tiny, persistent spot on my urethra. I've only
had laser ablation to burn off the cells on the vulva and vaginal
canal. Every Dr. is different and prefers different methods of
treatment they feel will best rid their patient of the virus. You
mentioned surgery + plastic surgery. If you are uncomfortable with
treatment your Dr. recommends, is it possible that there is another
Dr. nearby that may give you a different opinion? I know lots of
women that post here go for a 2nd opinion for treatment options or if
they do not feel comfortable or have good rapport with their Dr. Did
your Dr. mention what type of surgery they are recommending? I'm
assuming that b/c he/she also spoke of plastic surgery, laser or CUSA
(which is like pressure washing) isn't an option? You can ask if
there are other options besides excision of tissue and grafting. It
never hurts to ask. My own battle with this virus seems to be
ongoing. Most of us learn about HPV once we are diagnosed. Each goes
through the run of emotion that accompanies knowing we are infected
with an incurable virus. Having the support of women here who have
experienced all types of surgeries and treatments, is of great
comfort when we, ourselves face the unknown. YOu are not alone
having feelings of anxiety. No question is out of the question so
ask away! Hope this helps! We are here for you! You will be in my
thoughts and prayers! Keep us posted! This message is one I typed out yesterday and copied/pasted here for you. I also left you another that wasn't a reply from today....check it out. Hope you will "join support!." Hang in there!

Taylor/GA
