Subject: Dennis Payton just honked along?

I was looking up information about Manfred Mann recently and happened to catch a strange reference to the Dave Clark Five in the article. "Mike Vickers was as likely to be playing a sax (and he really played, rather than just honking along in the manner of rock saxmen of the period such as Dennis Payton of the Dave Clark Five)"

I don't understand this quote. To my ears, Payton played very well on DC5 songs.
