Almost the right word - free speech
Posted by Don Johnson on April 17, 2002 at 03:30:02:

The U.S. Srepreme Court has decided that the correct response to "words which you do not agree with", is more words, not less.
America sprang out of the concept of "if you don't like my words, let us debate those words".

All Alaskan's must recognize that the right to free speech is one of the most precious and fundamental rights of our liberty.
Most people I know support the right to free speech in all its forms. Most people also call for responsibility in exercising this right.
Most good citizen's know that they are accountable for their actions. It has been said,
"My right to swing my arm ends when my fist contacts your nose". There are some who seem to forget that they are also held accountable for their words.

Everyday, each of us live within limits and boundaries, those rules guard us from the very dark world of complete physical anarchy. Each time we stop
at a stop light we self-limit our freedom, so too limitations also exist to guard against verbal incivility.
The correct and civil word really has a power all its own...

The Internet has greatly increased our potential access to freedom of speech and expression to others throughout our world.
Unfortunatly, that freedom is also being abused and used irresponsibly as a reason to communicate in a profane, vulgar or insulting manner.

Dr. Alan Keyes, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, says in his book, Our Character, Our Future,"Freedom requires that at the end of the day, we accept the constraint that is required...."

Mark Twain also said;
"The difference between the almost - right word and the right word is really a large matter -- it's the difference between the lightning bug
and the lightning." -- Mark Twain, 1835-1910, Letter to George Bainton
