Date Posted: Tuesday, April 26, 09:36:24pm I'm amazed; I did not know USS Monitor 3rd Asst Engr. Robinson Woollen Hands was married nor had children. I'd love to meet his descendants. His memorial stone is in downtown Baltimore. The men of the "Starboard Watch Society" voted Robinson the Monitor's "best loved officer" by the Monitor enlisted crew. In a Monitor 3-D photo, Robinston sits atop a jury-rigged stool of two USS Monitor armoured deck-light covers, before the turret with other officers. One of these covers positively identified the wreck as THEE, USS Monitor, and not just a "monitor-class" vessel. Robinson's brother, Capt. George Washington Hands, Jr., CSA Infantry, considered Robinson a "traitor" and never again bespoke his late brother's name untill his own death. My grear grandfather, Sgt. James Anderson Woollen, CSA musician, is in the 1890's book, "Lee Family of Virginia" by Edmund Jennings Lee. I have seven CSA ancestors, no Union. A kinsman, Capt. Charles Dearborn Copp, earned the Union, Medal of Honor, at the Battle of Fredericksburg, where my ancestor, Capt. Alfred Alexander Miller, CSA, was killed. In the 1890's, Copp's belated Medal of Honor, arrived in the U.S. mail. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
