GREETINGS
As for the "important, insightful discussions of why a sack coat with a hand sewn button hole is somehow magically better than one with a machine stitch at the average viewing range of say, 2 feet (which I judge to be the approximate distance an officer stands in front of you during inspection)"
I say we are judging at the wrong range. For me, the most important viewer I have to impress with my impression is me. My goal is to dress right form the skin out. Not only does this help me set my persona to the proper 19th Cent. "now" but I can, when the need arises, strip down a layer or two without "Slipping out of Time." (Some, no doubt, still retain the painful image of my "bathing by halves with tin cup" presentation.)
Have I attained my goal of perfection? No.
I am, as in most things, very much a work in progress.
