It's a very good question. And you could go further. What happened if one of a pair died, just in the normal run of things. Did the other one have to resign his post? Imagine, nowadays, the bureaucracy that would arise. The Department for Military Affairs: Is this man truly your lover? When did you last sleep with him? JO'N.

Would some sort of visual evidence or fingerprinting have to be provided? When you said "nowadays", an unpleasant sort of chill ran down my spine...very disconcerting...
