I had the same experience. In fact, I almost went back to the beginning and started the book over! And I have the same feeling everytime I read the last 2 pages (which I've often done since reading it the first time....tho' I've yet to re-read the whole thing).

And it's all the more bitter that Jim had to keep living for awhile. I didn't even realize that at first, because I blurred through the last couple paragraphs. Then after a few hours I reread them and got even more depressed.
Such a wonderful book though. I'm really in awe of his ability to get to the essence of everything and everyone in the novel.

In one other thread on the board here (I don't recall which one) JO'N mentioned that the next work will develop from the last chapter of ASTB. If he does that (he also mentions another idea he is developing) it would be very interesting to see how he pulls it off.

I believe that in the end they are reunited. After reading the book the second time, and reading some of Jamie O'Neil's thoughts here on this forum, it is clear that Jim goes on as a soldier, and at the very end of the book, as he is dieing, he sees Doyler in a dream, and for the first time he is able to catch up with the dead (ie. in previous encounters with the dead, like when he talks with his brother, he is unable to reach his brother who is walking too fast.) At the end the two souls meet, Jim reaches Doyler, and "what cheer, eh?" is like a new beginning for the two lovers. For me,they live on in the next life, because true love lives forever. That's what I believe anyway.

I thought JO'N had said that he was doing a sequel...because he wanted to see whatr happened next with Jim and McM (see thread on "Next book").

Is it possible you misread the end? He can't write a sequel about Jim if he's dead....

You are right, he said he was thinking of writing a sequel, and he said if he did it would be an expanded version of the last few pages of the book. It would follow the story of Jim and McM in the aftermath of Doyler's death, where Jim becomes a soldier who will always be warring on the inside and outside. But Jamie O'Neill did write in Jim's death at the very end of the book, a death that occurs years after Doyler's death. So his sequel, if it is written, would following those years in between. Sorry for the confusion, I hope this is clearer. Happy reading!
