I'm now reading "Snow" by Orhan Pamuk for a class. This novel won the Nobel Prize in 2006. It has many of the same elements of The Kite Runner-- Western influence on Middle Eastern culture, loss of and return to faith, poltical struggle, ethnic, socio-political identity, the title is a metaphor. And yes, the choice for the Nobel is not based on "literary" merit-- its usually based on the politics behind the book (in this case the author had been put on trial in Turkey). In many ways it is much weaker than The Kite Runner...and yet, "Snow" is regarded as "literature" while "Kite Runner" is regarded as "popular fiction." For a paper I'm writing I'm trying to figure out how this distinction is/has been made.

Anyone have any ideas?
