Fair enough: Hint Number One.
Follow The Chords. The default way of soloing in rock is, in very basic terms, playing a blues scale. However, playing melodies in a solo makes it more a part of the song, and less just riffing. The way to make a solo melodic is to play in a major key (if the song is in a major key of course: you don't want to be playing a C# if the chord underneath is A minor), and follow the chords. In other words, let's say you're playing a solo over an instrumental verse, and the chord changes are A for 4 bars, Bm for 2 bars, D for two bars, back to A for 2 bars. When the chord changes to Bm, suggest that in the riffs you're playing: there should be Bs, F#s, and Ds dropping all over the place.
That's enough to chew on for now. Happy soloing!
